I honestly will never forget eating here - and I couldn't tell you what I actually ate. It was packed and I know we had to wait a while but it was worth it. All I know is I stepped into a mix of a medieval pub, biker bar, and western saloon, sat at the bar, was (over)served the biggest plates of food I've ever seen, we laughed with the bartender and chatted with the other people at the bar like we were all old buddies, made plans to meet up to surf together the next day, and a country western band roamed around the restaurant playing at people's tables...but honestly it all seems like a hallucination. 11/10 no notes.

I visited yesterday and was excited to try the steak sandwich, but unfortunately, I found the experience underwhelming. At $23, I expected a dish with bold flavors and thoughtful preparation, but the sandwich was quite basic, and the steak lacked seasoning or any standout taste.

That said, I really appreciated the atmosphere—it was warm, adventurous and inviting. However, for the price point, I believe the quality of the food should align more closely with the overall experience.

As much as I enjoyed the ambiance, the food didn’t meet my expectations, and I don’t think I’d return. I hope this feedback can help improve the quality of food and future experiences for other diners!

This is a fantastic place, oozing with charmand character and with a great staff with exemplary service, but I have some issues. First of all, the place is spectacularly loud, which makes it difficult for anyone with hearing issues. We ordered stew, steaks, cobbler, bread and asparagus. The stew and cobbler were fantastic. No notes. This steaks and bread were not. The bread was very dry and it obviously been sitting for a while. I've had their bread before, so this is not simply how they serve it. Steaks were woefully under seasoned. Asparagus still had Woody stems that were inedible and should have been trimmed. My biggest issue with the food is that the portions are so insanely massive that no person could possibly finish their food. If we had ordered one steak, for three people, it would have been enough. I understand that some people find that charming, but I would have appreciated a warning. We stuffed ourselves and still brought home twice as much food as we were able to eat. If we did not live locally, hundreds of dollars worth of food would have gone to waste. I absolutely think that you should go to the old place. It's great. Just know in advance that one entree will easily feed at least two people.

Food: BBQ Limited menu. We ordered a few ribeyes sliced. I would honestly say half of each one was fat and with plastic utensils and paper plates it was difficult to eat. Salad and burritos were average.

Service: You order yourself, find and clean your own table, and pickup your own food. Also, apparently you are expected to clean up yourself, which is why tables aren't clean. They add an 18% mandatory gratuity to every order for the service... you provide yourself.

Ambiance: picnic style table and chairs on ranch property. We went for lunch so we were sitting outside and we were disappointed the tables and chairs were dirty so that made it unappealing. Food comes in takeout containers and you get paper plates and plastic utensils.

It was ok, but not my cup of tea. At $50/person it just wasn't worth it and we won't be returning.

Not entirely a 5-star place (IYKYK) as it is more of a locally-known local’s spot with exceptional food, bar-like super friendly service and provides an overall excellent experience. I now fully understand why I was brought here by a local. “You gotta check this place out”, my local told me; however, be aware there is not a full bar and thus should be marked down a star, but the overall experience is 5-star.

Our table ordered waaaay too much food (the portions are abundant), but we had to try the menu. Two med-rare and very tender rib-eye steaks (these were quite rare, but not blue), some deliciously crispy bacon (pork belly) and some Mac-n-cheese they call some kind of baked macaroni. It’s very Mac-n-cheesy. Good though.

The steaks come with a deliciously loaded baked potato and a spring salad. The plate is served with a serrated steak knife, which I have never cared for because the serrated tears the steak, and even more so on the rare steak. I used the butter knife and it was a very tender and flavorful steak. The table was also brought some very fresh and very crusty sourdough bread. Great stuff!!!

All of the items brought to our table were very good except only one for which I have a complaint. The bacon (thick pork belly) needed a sauce of some sort. Although good, perfectly crunchy and smoky, if this was the only appetizer ordered while drinking, you would be drunk before finishing the plate. It was in need.

Just before we left, at 6pm-ish, a soulful musical artist came in the door and began an unamplified set walking through the bar area and indoor tables. Speaking of the reserved tables; be careful of the legs when sitting in the booths. You’ll quickly figure out why.

A good place for locals and some not so locals. I’m understanding this is a biker hangout and serves a good brunch. A neat little area outside to walk around or sit at the outside tables. Careful, the menu is more expensive if you order from the window.

Maybe again sometime.

The food isn’t great here and they serve everything in Togo. Who wants a steak in a Togo container. You stand in line and order yourself find your own seat Serge your own water and throw all of your stuff away. The meat isn’t tender. I don’t think it’s a great beef in general. If you want a drink you still have to stand in the very long food line. Flies and bees all over your food as well. It’s cool being in the canyon and outside but there are lots of other places I’d prefer if I want a good meal.

This hidden gem is tucked back among the canyons of Malibu. Getting here from the south is part of the experience as you meander through the Santa Monica mountains. The history of this restaurant and its surrounding buildings is well worth a read. The actual restaurant is small and rugged but charming at the same time. Walking into the Old Place takes you back in time with its historic bar, appropriately distributed architectural elements and cozy dining booths. The whole property is a fun place to explore and take in the natural beauty of this old family owned property. The food here is legit and the service comes with a healthy dose of old school family charm. Definitely recommend making reservations if you plan to eat. Even though it’s a bit of a drive to get to, the weekends tend to bring bigger. crowds. The Old Place is one of my favorites!

BEAUTIFUL LOCATION. Wonderful atmosphere. Make reservations or you won't get to eat inside. Food was not what I was expecting. All the reviews built my expectations very high. It did not meet them. Potatoe was average. My steak was tender but bland. Salad was good.
Outside service is not well planned. 1 person handling ever order, including drinks so the line is long and slow. 18% tip is included already on the bill so the service attention is not there. No one is working for a tip. I would recommend this place but only if you are looking for a beautiful atmosphere for your dinner plans.

The steak itself was extremely disappointing, do not recommend. The sandwich bread from the steak sandwich was nice and soft, and the sauce complemented it well. The cinnamon rolls were the best things I tried, not too sweet glaze with a more complex flavor than just sugar, even if a bit dry.

Food and our server were excellent as always.

Part way into the meal our night was almost spoiled by one of the hosts (gray-haired middle aged gentleman) who approached us under the pretense of asking how our meal was but swiftly moved to chastising us for booking a table for three when there was only two of us. I explained that this is how the website works (go try it - min party size is 3 regardless of day/time). With this new information I expected him to apologize but no, he chose to reiterate that we should be more mindful in future.

Really disappointed with the attitude here folks. You should really consider not blaming customers for your website design.

We went as a couple and were seated super quickly at the bar as they only take reservations for larger groups (book weeks ahead). The wait time was said to be an hour but we ended up getting seated after about 19 minutes which we used for a beautiful stroll around their grounds, past peacocks 🦚 etc.

We had the sirloin steak with the regular sides of the most amazing loaded potato I have ever had and a salad. I’ll be dreaming of this dinner for a while and can’t wait to come back.

We sat outside where we had to go around the building to place an order. The inside was still closed. They had no waiters or servers of any kind outside. We had to order ourselves by going around the building to place an order at the window, we were giving a pager to pick up the food when it was ready. We also had to walk around the building to get water from a water fountain. At our surprise when we paid the bill, they had automatically added 18% tip! Normally, we have no problem giving a good tip for good service. However, they provided zero service and therefore, don’t deserve a tip! My friend ordered a BLT, it came with some kind of fatty pork meat, it was not bacon. When we asked them why they added a tip since they provided no service, they basically said that that’s how they do things and were not friendly at all! We’ll never go here again and would never recommend this place! The food sucks, no service, and very unfriendly restaurant!

Open and in business since 1970 and tucked away deep in the Agoura Hills, The Old Place is a truly unique dining experience for Los Angeles and it really feels like you are eating in a different county and time. When you pull up, it looks like a series of old western buildings, but also cozy enough and that you immediately want to check it out. Parking in the area is kind of tricky but if there aren’t any spaces available in the parking lot behind the restaurant, it’s easy to park in the neighborhood directly next to the restaurant. You will have to walk a block at most. There was a bit of confusion when I booked reservations for dinner. We have been for lunch before where they served steak sandwiches and you have to eat outside, but I wanted to stop in again for indoor dining. I didn’t realize when I booked the reservation that you need to be a party of three or more to reserve a table. When I arrived, they told me this, but it was not a problem being that the bar is quite large and many others were eating at it as well. We were a party of two and could comfortably fit and ate our whole meal at the bar.

They have a fairly limited menu but a ton of hearty classics that will really fill your belly. They obviously have a very large drink menu as well so whatever you are in the mood for you, you’ll be able to find here. For our meal, we started off with one of the specials of the day, which was the Fried Pickles. To our surprise they were whole pickles and breaded just like fish and chips, so it really was a pleasant surprise. For our entrées, we chose the Bone-In Filet Mignon 16 ounce and the Chicken Pot Pie. The filet was cooked perfectly and seasoned well and I truly enjoyed it. There is such a little fat on the filet that you can pretty much eat the entire thing which is my favorite part. The baked potato that they serve with it is gigantic and honestly delicious. It was lacking sour cream, otherwise it was perfect. The Chicken Pot Pie was also a unique take on the classic dish and the puff pastry was crispy and delicious just like I hoped.

Overall, this is a really fun place to have lunch or dinner and the drive out is a big part of the charm. It’s really nice to get out of the city and The Old Place is a great destination to mix up your dining locations. I would recommend to anyone for any occasion.

I love this place. Food is... well I would say imagine the best food from the best cookout/ pot luck when all the best home cooks step up their game. Everything about this place feels like a great cookout with a bunch of friends (except when you pay your check). Steaks are great, bacon... oh man... and chicken pot pie is fantastic. My kids loved their cheese pasta (that and their bread were the only thing I thought was just okay- nothing bad- just okay). I always had great service. Get here a bit early, walk around the creek right next to it (if not dries out) and play with peacocks.

This place is heavy on the atmosphere. It does the old Western theme without being cheesy, while serving some delicious meals. The bacon is unlike anything I’ve had! I have been coming here every couple of months since 2013. I stuck with them thru pandemic and their deserved rise in popularity. Food is good but the atmosphere makes it excellent.

Is it overpriced? Absolutely and mandatory tip is a joke but then again my free choice to go there. Today unfortunately service was subpar and when my issue was raised with management it was borderline rude. So suddenly a mandatory gratuity felt a rip off. As i said we are getting old together and they made me feel sad today. And of course i tipped them 18% for their service (or lack of). Maybe next time it’ll be all forgotten. Maybe they should reconsider their new waiter. The blonde lady i have been seeing there since 2013… i dunno, maybe she had a bad day but i was surprised she was not helpful.

I’d recommend getting here before 11am on a weekend for brunch to avoid the line. This is a must go out of your way anytime you’re in the LA area.

He had the clams and the beef stew. They were both amazing!!! I was lucky enough to take a 💔 inch of the stew home and have for a couple lunches. I was also thinking of those clams!!!

The Old Place Steak House is a true gem, consistently delivering delicious steaks that keep me coming back for more. Nestled in a picturesque setting, the restaurant's charm is enhanced by the presence of majestic peacocks that roam the grounds, adding a touch of natural beauty to the dining experience. The tender, flavorful steaks are cooked to perfection, satisfying every carnivore's palate. This enchanting combination of scrumptious cuisine and the serene ambiance with peacocks makes it my all-time favorite dining spot. If you're looking for a memorable steakhouse experience, the Old Place is an absolute must-visit.

I wanted to like this place. I heard good things. I even did a six mile hike before hand and even being exhausted and hungry. This place fell flat.
First of all 18% automatic gratuity for every order. That’s ridiculous. Just include it in your price.
Secondly, the food was meh to bad. I ordered the cinnamon rolls which is three medium rolls. The frosting was dull. Cinnabon is cheaper and better.
I ordered a pulled chicken sandwich and it was dry. There was an effort to put aioli on the bread but the spread job was awful. The wedges are plentiful but forgetful.
I ordered a glass of wine and it was a short one. All in all it was $67 for all that. Save yourself the hassle of finding parking, a seat outside, and the money. Why is there automatic gratuity? I did all the cleanup and had to pick up my order.

I went to the Old Place for the first time with three friends at the beginning of June…and then immediately took my family a week later, it was that good. The Old Place has a short menu and does everything on it really, *really* well.
I ordered the steak and eggs with potato wedges, and had leftovers for *two* more meals. The portion sizes are immense.
After you eat (or while you’re waiting for your food and someone saves your table for you 😊), take twenty minutes and explore the grounds! There’s an excellent on-site shop with a little bit of everything local, peacocks are waiting to be found, and there are so many art installations scattered throughout the property!
If possible, get there between 10:00-11:30 am before the parking lot fills up.

I recently visited The Old Place with high expectations, but unfortunately, my dining experience was far from satisfying.

First and foremost, I was excited to try their vegetarian option as I follow a plant-based diet for religious reasons. However, to my dismay, my dish arrived with small pieces of meat mixed in with the potatoes. This mistake was not only careless but also deeply upsetting, considering the importance of adhering to dietary preferences, especially when explicitly requested in advance.

Furthermore, I was surprised to find an additional 18% tip automatically added to my bill without any consent or prior warning. Tipping should always be optional and left to the discretion of the customer based on the quality of service received. Forcing patrons to pay a fixed tip percentage without any flexibility is not only unprofessional but also disrespectful to customers.

All in all, my visit left me disappointed and frustrated. I had hoped for a memorable dining experience, but unfortunately, it was marred by a lack of attention to dietary preferences. I cannot recommend this restaurant to others until they address these issues and significantly improve their overall approach to customer satisfaction.

Honestly overall a bad experience. Piss poor management and service. We waited about 12 min to be seated and they force us outside to sit in 92 weather until a spot open up instead of given a wait time or anything. The menu inside is completely different for the one out side and you can’t order from both; just from the corresponding one. Finally got our food the steak was coated in pepper and dry. As well as the mashed potatoes tasted watered down. Food looked appealing put tasted atrocious. You would be better off taking the 43 dollars you would spend a steak and get something at a chain restaurant. Complete waste of time and money.

I had an incredible experience at this restaurant! The selection of beers was outstanding, offering a diverse range of flavors to suit every palate. The food was delicious, with a menu that impressed both carnivores and vegetarians alike. The atmosphere was cozy yet vibrant, making it a perfect spot for a casual get-together or a night out with friends. The staff was friendly and attentive, ensuring our dining experience was nothing short of amazing. I can't wait to return and explore more of their beer and food offerings! Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience.

We ordered the sourdough bread-and-butter, which is not complementary, along with the Noodle Bake for appetizers. The noodle bake was delicious. For my main course, I ordered the Ribeye steak with a loaded baked potato. The steak was super tender and juicy, and the baked potato was deliciously buttery. I will be happy to eat here again. But due to the high prices, it will have to wait for a special occasion.

This place used to be good, now after my last visit I would not recommend it to anyone. The service is absolutely terrible and the pricing and mandatory tipping have made this establishment a no go. They have gotten to popular for their own good. With so many other great restaurants in the area that care about their customers there is no reason to come her anymore. shame on them.

We have visited The Old Place for both inside and outside menus. The food was excellent for both services. However, I must probably give more stars if I could for the outside service. Yes, you have to usually wait in line to place your order. However, the vibe is awesome to be able to eat outside. They have numerous areas spread out across their property and you can easily find an area to eat.
Inside, we tried the Cheese & Cured Meat Board, the Ribeye, and the Chicken Pot Pie. There wasn't any food left on anyone's plate! Outside, we had the Old Place Burrito and the Steak Sandwich and they were both excellent. There's a little separate cafe where you can buy drinks, lattes, espresso, coffee, etc. I also tried the Manmosa ("man"-sized mimosa) and that was great as well!
Finally, there are numerous wild peacocks on the property. Take a stroll while you're waiting for your food or to walk off the meal you just ate.
We definitely recommend this place!

The Old Place has been one of my favorite restaurants for the last 5 years. The food is incredible and the location is beautiful. All wood look and feel, Winery, coffee shop, best steak and eggs or steak burrito you will have in your life. For years we went every Sunday and never disappointed. I would like to see them opening their doors again to seat inside though. The decoration is very original and I would like to be able to enjoy again our private mail room.

Don't leave this place without tasting their massive cinnamon roll!

Steak and eggs was fantastic. Steak was smoky and had a more country, spicier seasoning. Eggs were fresh and cooked to sunny side up perfection. They paired well with the hardy portions of potatoes. Atmosphere was fantastic.

Side salad was a large takeout size. Mostly the salad lettuce green medley with a bit of cherry tomatoes and cucumber. The honey mustardy dressing was tasty tho.

Parking was fine and could be found in the back.

Seating inside is very limited. parking is available all around. you are definitely paying for the experience and the environment not so much the food. The food is definitely a large portion with good flavor, but a high price. Staff is limited only to indoor seating if you opt to eat outside. You have to pick up your food from a pick up window.

Make no mistake, this is all about location. The food was adequate but nothing I would go out of my way for. Do not get the ice tea, it has an odd taste. My main problem was that I asked for a medium rare steak and got an extremely rare steak.

This place is good, it’s nice to hang out there they have a bunch of outside tables but the food is overly priced, even if it’s good I love the mushroom sandwich and the meat sandwich so I keep going there. The serious issue is that they are extremely slow in taking orders, this is the slowest place I have ever been in my entire life.
