The Derby

I recently had the pleasure of celebrating a Friendsmas gathering with my girlfriends at The Derby, a restaurant that came highly recommended. We dressed up for the occasion and were excited to experience what this establishment had to offer.

First, I would like to commend the complimentary valet parking service, which alleviated the hassle of finding a place to park. For those who prefer, there is also a self-parking option available. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated with an array of Christmas decorations, exuding an elegant old Hollywood ambiance, complete with wood accents and cherry-red booths, making it an ideal location for family or group outings.

We had a reservation for 6:30 PM and arrived a bit early. I am pleased to report that we were seated promptly according to our scheduled reservation. Our server, Michael, provided exceptional customer service—truly a 10 out of 10. He welcomed us warmly, expertly explained the menu and drink options, and made excellent recommendations without being intrusive.

Now, onto the food—remarkable is an understatement. Our steaks were cooked to perfection, and the side dishes were bursting with flavor, warranting a rating of 10 out of 10. The drinks—apple martinis, lemon drops, and cosmos—were also perfectly crafted. We also enjoyed calamari and fried Brussels sprouts, both of which were delicious, especially the Brussels sprouts with their sweet vinaigrette.

We were seated near the fireplace, adding to the cozy atmosphere. We brought a bottle of champagne and paid the corkage fee; the staff thoughtfully put it on ice and provided us with champagne flutes, enhancing our experience. To conclude the evening, we indulged in dessert—specifically, the highly recommended bread pudding, which lived up to the nostalgic memories from my childhood with my grandfather.

Overall, The Derby exceeded our expectations, and I wholeheartedly recommend it for anyone seeking a remarkable dining experience.

Great food. Michael was our server. Very attentive and friendly. Good value. My wife and I celebrated Nee Years a day early to avoid the crowd. New to the area. This was our second visit to the Derby. It was as good as our first. The experience was nothing short of spectacular. Jackie provided excellent service. Everything about this place is classy. The food was delicious and one of the best. This was our first time and we love it here. Jackie made our anniversary date night a special one. She was very attentive and sweet. She was on point with making sure we were taken care of. Kudos to the chef. We cannot stop talking about how delectable, flavorful and tasty the food was. We want some more as I type this. The place itself it quite a gem.

Excellent food and service. We ordered prime rib, NY strip, and medallions. Prime rib was juicy and so tender. I preferred the NY strip which was perfect. Amazing appetizers too, like this thinly sliced salmon. It was worth splurging here for my birthday. Server also gifted me a box of cookies.🥰

The Derby definitely did not disappoint. The service was awesome. The food is even better. Best steak, prime rib , and Chilean sea bass was on point. Hands down one of the best steak houses ever. Old fashions were perfect. Definitely going back.

A fantastic dining experience for lunch!

We had the best anniversary dinner. The food and service were top notch. They even gave us a complimentary Baked Alaska. I loved the Halloween decor. We got the 3 course dinner and the shrimp cocktail was the best I ever had.

We decided to come here for the first time on Thanksgiving, and we're so glad we did!

If you're not going to stay home for Thanksgiving, this is the place to be! The whole restaurant was packed and lively.

But somehow, the service was extremely on point despite the busy day.

Skyler was the one who took our reservation and seated us. She made our introduction to The Derby special, as she was very warm and welcoming. Aly was our server and was exceptionally attentive and friendly.

For the meals, you can choose off the menu or order a Turkey or Ham special. Each special comes with all the normal Thanksgiving fixin's -- stuffing, potatoes, yams, green beans and pumpkin pie. It was all very delicious!

The experience exceeded our expectations and we'll be back to The Derby soon to try it out on a regular day!

I was really looking forward to trying this place, but unfortunately in the middle of our meal the power went out and halted all cooking operations so we were not able to get past the appetizers. Nonetheless, based on the experience we had The Derby still deserves 5 stars all around. The interior is huge with lots of rooms and tables, and the staff are very friendly and professional.

When we first arrived there is self parking but also complementary valet. We weren’t sure what to expect since it was our first time here but we saw some photos. At the entrance it was full but we were greeted with smiles. The restaurant was full but we had reservations and were sat in less than 5 min. Service was absolutely perfect I regret not remembering our waiters name but he has a great mustache lol. He helped us figure out the menu and even suggested some dishes. From the start we received water and it was topped off without asking for the rest of the night, our food came hot and delicious, the scallops, salmon, shrimp and steak were perfectly cooked. And I have to mention it again but our water and coffee was topped off without asking. Maybe small detail but it really helps when you’re having a great convo and don’t have to worry about waving someone down. We usually don’t get desert but the night was going so well we didn’t want to leave. The crème brûlée and berries were delicious. We had an amazing experience and I’m glad they made my family feel welcome. Without a doubt we will be coming back and I’m bringing the extended family as well.

The food wasn't worth the price. Had the vodka pasta and it wasn't much better then any other vodka pasta at other places. But the service was amazing! The atmosphere was nice and well decorated for Christmas but the dim lighting was a little too much.

Came for a family event had the worst experience! The waiter and staff were rude and not friendly. Our table was forgotten about and never checked on. We waited 30 minutes to receive salads and appetizers. We never received drink refills until our salads came out. Our main dishes came out 30 to 40 minutes later. Food was over cooked and some items cold. Desert took an additional 20 minutes to come out. The waiter did not care as we had a large party and a tip was already guaranteed. Other parties around us that came after us received there food first and where checked on. Over all horrible service , food and experience.

Made a reservation for 12 people. Waited 29 minutes to be seated. After ordering, it took 39 minutes for our appetizers to be severed. Took an additional 30 minutes for our food to be served. Our food was made incorrectly. All of our steaks were over cooked or served rare. Waited an additional 20 minutes to get dessert. Waiter never came around. Didn’t get refills on drinks in timely matter. Other individuals that sat around us had better service and individuals who came after us received food before our party. Overall horrible experience with food and service .

We have been here twice for catered events / large groups. The service has been the longest I've seen in my life. 1 hour for appetizer, 1 hr + for main dish, and 1 hr + for desert. It is painfully slow. They certainly don't have the capacity to serve for a large party. The food is ok as good as any other steakhouse. It's definitely not worth the wait.

The derby 102 years old and I am just finding out about this little gem in Arcadia 1-2 mile from santa Anita raceway. My wife and I tried their Saturday brunch at 1030 my wife had the eggs Benedict with filet on top which was delicious. I had the derby Hash which was also excellent. The derby decorated for the holidays looks amazing and they also have two fire places

I love the atmosphere with the fireplaces and the booths! The Derby is a beautiful step back in time. They allow you time for your cocktail before hand with no pressure to hurry up and order. And the food is amazing!!!

This has always been a five-star place for me. But our last visit was not the same. The restaurant is beautifully decorated for Christmas but the bartender seemed distracted and overworked, our server was just okay. Main course was warm and not hot. I would not say that it was a bad experience but it certainly wasn't a five-star. I'm willing to go again to give it another chance

My folks have been coming here for special occassions over the decades and I joined them for a little bday celebration while I'm in town. It was everything they made it out to be and more! Our server Jackie absolutely made our night and was so kind and attentive, even though it was clearly a very busy Saturday. The staff overall were lovely and absolutely hustling. (Tip them well!) The food was amazing and Jackie's recommendations didn't disappoint...especially the cheesecake, HOLY COW! I can't wait to go back. Thank you to everyone at The Derby!! Wish we took photos but we were just having so much fun and enjoying the food, we totally forgot. :)

We were in town for an event, we had Jackie as our server the first night we ate there and she was amazing! The food was great! We decided to come back the next night with more of our friends and got Jackie as our server again! Everyone loved her! Great service and fantastic food! We will definitely be back! One of the best steaks I've had. The price was more than fair when compared to other places of similar service. I got the ribeye and it had an amazing sear, and evenly cooked. I ordered some bourbon butter garlic on the side, but honestly, it only distracted from the taste of the steak. A big plus is that they serve Fosselman's Ice Cream, which in itself is a great ice cream place and worth a visit.

My sister-in-law was celebrating a special birthday. Due to some health concerns, she hasn't had very much of an appetite. She was so excited when I said let's go to the Derby. Our first Thanksgiving at The Derby and it is official, it is going to be our new Thanksgiving tradition. We lost our mother last year on 12/31/23 and we spent the last 22 years going to pick her up, 80miles away, and going out to eat. She hated cooking but loved good food and dinning out. This was our first Thanksgiving in 22 years that we stayed close to home and without our mom. First words out of our mouths, when we tasted the food was, “mom would have loved The Derby”, we, three grabbed our delicious cocktails and toasted to our mom’s honor.

From the ease of making reservations to the prompt seating when we arrived, we enjoyed every minute. The meal was both traditional and they also offered the usual prime rib and steaks. We opted for the Turkey Thanksgiving meal. It was a generous plate of succulent turkey and the best stuffing I’ve ever tasted. Included sweet potatoes , perfectly al dente green beans, a tangy home made cranberry sauce , mashed potatoes and decadent gravy. It was all so divine. We ordered a side of Marsala mushrooms (I almost sipped the juices from the bowl because it was THAT good). The pumpkin pie Made with love and you could taste every spice. The nightcap was The Derby’s version of a spiked eggnog… oh my… I could have had three of these as my dessert…amazing.

Our favorite part of our evening by far was Marta our server. She was cheerful, attentive, personable, and made us feel like we were her only table…and it was obvious she had many..yikes, the place was busy, but she made our dining experience memorable as did the rest of the staff, clearing plates, filling waters, etc.

We’ve been to Ruth’s Chris, Maestros , and others for Thangsving over the 22 years we went out wit mom. Not one came close to TheDerby. Mom, would definitely be proud we found The Derby for Thanksgiving.

Food was very excellent! I want to Thanksgiving and they took us within the time before reservation although it was very crowded and they served as pretty promptly. The food was delicious. Although it's somewhat pricey it still worth it because how great the food was. I was very happy! Will come again next Thanksgiving!

The food, cocktails and service were top notch. Great value for fine dining in a kitschy cool environment. From the host stand to the server and valet, the management obviously knows what they are doing. I highly recommend The Derby for anyone in the area, particularly for those who were at the races.

Simply put, the Derby is a perfect example of the way California steakhouses used to be. The atmosphere was elegant with red leather booths and brick walls. The service was A1. Our server, Bailey, catered to our every whim. Last but not least, the food was perfect. It wasn't cheap but it was worth every penny.

We had the nicest waiter. I think his name is Jeff .its so nice to go to a restaurant that holds to tradition. Also , The Halloween decorations were very clever. Hopefully when the renovations are done the restaurant will not try to modernize the warm and cozy atmosphere.

I ordered the filet mignon with bernaise sauce: mashed potatoes, carrots, and a crunchy fried onion topping over the steak. I ordered the steak rare: it was yummy, so tender, & flavorful. The steak cut so effortlessly like hot butter on toast. I also ordered the French onion soup with a yummy melted cheese topping. You can't go wrong dining here: just happy, yummy mouth watering memories. Your tongue will thank you. Desserts are great too. I've dined other times and have gotten Desserts 🍨.

Great place to visit. I've been there a hand full of times. The service is fantastic. The servers are friendly, helpful, attentive, and have a great sense of humor. The filet mignon with wrapped bacon is my favorite. The atmosphere is really cool, I enjoy seeing all the Derby decor. It does get busy so make sure you have reservations. They have complementary parking and some street parking. Their drink selection is fantastic from beer to wines. The price is reasonable for the food being served and the selection is great. Also, their bread pudding desert is my new favorite, make sure you leave room for that. I recommend it if your in the area.

The experience was nothing short of spectacular. Jackie provided excellent service. Everything about this place is classy. The food was delicious and one of the best. This was our first time and we love it here. Jackie made our anniversary date night a special one. She was very attentive and sweet. She was on point with making sure we were taken care of. Kudos to the chef. We cannot stop talking about how delectable, flavorful and tasty the food was. We want some more as I type this. The place itself it quite a gem.

9/28/24 - We try to visit other restaurants, but for us, they just don't compare. The staff is awesome and definitely the food. The Mike Smith steak, potatoes Romanoff, calamari and cheesecake are a few favorites.
2020 - We love The Derby. The food is delicious on all levels. 2020 has been a hard year, but The Derby has worked hard to ensure the safety of employees and guests while doing their very best to continue to provide the service we know and love. For the entitled who have any complaints, please show some space and grace, we are in a pandemic. Support your local businesses.

This place has been here since 1922! It's famous for its steaks and prime rib. My wife and I were celebrating our 26th anniversary here. They had the Dine LA three course menu for $65/person. You get a choice of a starter, main entree, and a dessert. I started with the French onion soup. So good! I then had the medium rare 12 oz. Prime Rib with baked potato topped with sour cream and chives and bread pudding. It was delicious! Just right in everything. My wife had the grilled Brussel sprouts in glazed balsamic vinegarette reduction sauce topped with shaved parmagane cheese. Then the 8 oz. Applewood basin wrapped Angus filet mignon steak, medium, with onion rings and garlic mashed potatoes. We finished with on the house toasted marshmallow ice cream cognac jubilee! So, so good! Then we tried to finish our German chocolate cake and bread pudding, which we had to take home to eat later. Overall, this iconic steak house is one of the best traditional steak houses still in business. Go check it out before they remodel this place next year!

Went for my birthday. Service was great, and the food was amazing. Steak is super tender and juicy. The drinks are beyond amazing. You can tell they are not cheap with the alcohol. Will definitely be going again.

The Derby is a great historical restaurant to enjoy some great food and be apart of a cozy ambiance. The service with Josh was outstanding. We had a party of ten in a small private room and Josh made the experience one we won't forget. All of us enjoyed the food...the sea bass cooked to perfection as was the bacon wrapped petite filet mignon. The garlic mashed potatoes were creamy and the balsamic drizzled roasted brussel sprouts tasted amazing. Everyone enjoyed their entrees and appetizers. I recommend The Derby for any special occasion or just a night to celebrate life.

If I could rate this place a 0 I would so 1 will have to do. We are staying at the hotel next door and we always stay here since we live in the desert and frequently come to visit family. We have a huge wedding tomorrow and normally both my mother and I like always visiting different restaurants every time we are out here. We had been wanting to try this place so we took advantage of it and decided to have dinner here. We are in comfortable clothes since we are walking and go inside. My mother asked if we need to have a reservation or is there immediate sitting. I was looking around and there is no one there and they said the terrace outside. Which was fine with us. We ordered a couple of appetizers the sticky ribs, the fried calamari, and the rib eye French Dip. The whole meal was cold. The ribs were cold and no where seemed like slow roasted. The calamari was cold inside and out and we know that needs to be nice a hot to get that great taste and sandwich was cold as well. So much for that nice hot meal that we couldn't wait to have. They did not charge us for the 2 appetizers and truly I will say our server was fantastic. She was Very nice and had such a warm smile. Not to crazy about the Hostess putting it mildly. Would not recommend it at all and plus we even offered to pay for the full meal. The reason why I choose this place because it has a 4.7 rating on Google. No where did the meal we had was a 4.7 rating of anything.

The Derby in Arcadia is truly a gem, an establishment with over 100 years of history that continues to impress. We've been coming here for special occasions, and each visit has been memorable. The Derby's rich ambiance, filled with mementos of Woolf, Santa Anita, Seabiscuit, and the Premier Stakes Races, creates an experience like no other. As you enjoy the atmosphere, it's easy to imagine yourself at the starting gate, with a field of appetizers and entrees to choose from.

Much like George Woolf, known as the "iceman" for his calculated moves, The Derby encourages a thoughtful selection from their menu. We found this approach rewarding as we celebrated my wife’s birthday after attending a Candlelight Concert in Downtown. Our server, Manny, was outstanding—attentive and ensuring we had everything we needed for an enjoyable evening. Barbara was a sweetheart, helping us select a delicious ribeye steak, cooked medium well. The steak was perfectly charred on the outside and tender inside, with sides that were equally impressive, especially the sauce mushroom.

It's been a while since our last visit, but this experience reminded us of just how exceptional The Derby truly is. While other steakhouses may boast loudly, The Derby runs quietly alongside, confident in the quality of its food and service. When it comes to the best dining in the San Gabriel Valley, The Derby remains our go-to place, a place where we always know we'll have a great meal.

The Derby definitely did not disappoint. The service was awesome. The food is even better. Best steak, prime rib , and Chilean sea bass was on point. Hands down one of the best steak houses ever. Old fashions were perfect. Definitely going back.

Love the brick walls, red leather seats and service is always exceptional. Steaks to the garlic cheese bread are seasoned and cooked to perfection. There not snobby on service or dress code.

We didn't eat, but stopped in for a quick drink since we were staying in the hotel behind the restaurant. What a super cool place, been there over 100 years. Food looked and smelled amazing! Drinks were excellent and service fantastic. Definitely will go back for dinner next time we visit.

Celebrated my sisters birthday. Don't go to The Derby often, but this was a wonderful visit as always. Our service and waiter (Emanuel)were wonderful. Did was great and my sister enjoyed her Martini which she said is the best one she had ever had.

It's been a while since we've been to The Derby, so I have to base this on the last experience.

The food is very good. It's a steak house, so eat the steak or prime rib. Our waitress massaged our baked potato tableside - it made the potato nice and fluffy. A very nice touch! Everything was excellent!

The service was top notch. Good, old school service! I like it and there should be more professional waiters/waitresses out there! Kudos to The Derby for having a top notch wait staff!

I like the old steakhouse feel. Red naugahyde, private booths, but not quiet - you feel the energy of the place! To me, this is what an old school steakhouse should be!

The last time we ate here was pre-pandemic. We're due for another visit soon!

If you're looking for a quality meal with a professional wait staff and a cool old school vibe, this is your place! I highly recommend it!

The Backn Wrapped Filet Mignon was cooked to perfection, as was my baked potato.

The calamari and the brussel sprout appetizers just amazing!

Our waiter “Jefferey” was the best and was God Sent!

I have been coming to the Derby since I was in High School back in the late 70’s and I have never ever been disappointed.

The food is ALWAYS COOKED TO PERFECTION!

Very tasty and a little bit expensive! But all cost every dollar! And we took three cocktails and port wine, they increased an amount...
It was my birthday and Derby gifted me a dessert. Very -very-very pretty place!
The best file minion, very good onion soup, very good appetizers and unbelievable tasty fried bread. I want to return only for this bread!

We tried this restaurant because it was on Dine LA and one of my co workers recommended it. The food was delicious! The complimentary cheese bread to start was perfect with our 1st courses of clam chowder and French onion soup. Our steaks were quite possibly the best steaks we ever had. Cooked perfectly and beyond juicy and flavorful. The potatoes romanoff were the perfect side as were the garlic mashed potatoes. We were so stuffed we had to take our dessert to go. The service was exceptional as well. Our water glasses never got below half way full before someone was coming by to fill them up and the waitress and her trainee were very attentive. We’ll definitely be back!
