Hidden gem inside a small plaza on Baldwin Avenue. Japanese Chefs behind the Sushi Bar will delight you with their variety of high quality fresh fish and seafood using Japanese brown rice cooked to perfection. Very nice and calming atmosphere that allows you to enjoy your meal without distractions and always with a professional service by all staff members.
It makes sense that this place is always busy so be early, write down your name and have your whole party with you on time, otherwise you might not get seated (fyi, small places relies on rotation so waiting is not good for business so be mindful and respectful).
They also have an izakaya across street and seems to have just opened a Yakitori place next door too, I've tried their izakaya and the food was amazing so I can't wait to try their Yakitori, I'm sure it will be delicious!

I could belived there were so many people lined up before it opened for lunch! I ordered the New York Steak lunch and it was good. The portion was not huge but it wasn't small neither. The taste was good. The place was busy so the servers couldn't come often to our table to take care of our needs, and that was understandable.
I will come back with my family.

Wanted to try a new sushi spot and had Sushi Kisen on my list of places to try. So happy we did. They had two of my favorites, which is very rare for places east of the 110 fwy. Awabi (abalone) and mirugai (giant clam). Pricy, but was expected. Our dishes were generally good to great and very fresh. We had so many, types of fish it was a bit hard to track. Service was average to poor though. We were greeted quickly and with a smile, but went down hill from there. Our server didn’t seem like she wanted to be there that night. It was very warm and temps inside were warm, so maybe that was the cause, but it’s not like I caused that :(.

A great local sushi surprise!

Coming into Sushi Kisen, you're immediately greeted by the sushi chefs as well as the wait staff who were really kind. Once we were seated at the sushi bar (there are tables as well), we were able to talk to our sushi chef for our orders.

A bit different from many other sushi spots, there is no omakase set here which is interesting although they note you can ask the sushi chef for recommendations. They explicitly note this in the menu as well as their instructions on how to eat sushi if you aren't aware. After being given a towel, you can start ordering. Here's a few items we ordered:

*Nigiri: Nigiri orders come in 2 pieces per order but with a group of 3, they were still able to accommodate us with 3 individual pieces. All the nigiri we had was excellent although sometimes a little heavy on the wasabi as a heads-up. Some of my favorites included the chu toro; the amberjack; and the sweet shrimp which were all excellent.
*Miso soups: We also ordered several different miso soups that were all unique such as adding in clams and adding a bit to the various broths. Super tasty and we were able to share by getting extra bowls.
*Radish dishes: We got a couple of radish dishes including one with tuna and one with roe. These weren't as good to us and a bit bland.
*Cut rolls: We ordered a couple cut rolls as well that can be made into handrolls too. Not as memorable as the nigiri but appreciated the option. I liked the blue crab one personally!
*Green tea: We ordered three iced green teas that had endless refills. Super refreshing // well made.

A few logistical notes: you are able to make a reservation by giving them a call or filling out a form. The parking lot is a bit tight although usually there are spots. Lunchtime definitely seemed busy and active, at least when we went on a Tuesday.

For 3 people, we paid about $220 which doesn't break the bank. We left pretty happy and content! Looking forward to a return trip in the near future.

This is by far the best sushi restaurant I have visited so far in the greater LA area. It is 100% authentic and real Japanese cuisine, fish is very fresh, and food is delicious!

The service is wonderful. Most staff are of a Japanese background and very familiar with the menu which is great, ask them a question if you are not sure. When arriving, make sure you have your entire party with you as the restaurant is in high demand and with limited seating so you won’t get a table unless everyone is there.

Once you get seated, I highly recommend the hot tea and one of the dinner plates (deluxe or premium dinner plate). It is always changing and comes with a variety of sushi. When I was there, the deluxe had maki and tuna nigiri while the premium had shrimp and crab. Miso soup was delicious!

Regarding fish, it is a very high grade of fish meat. You can tell the fish was properly filleted during preparation and it melts in your mouth.

10/10 - will be back

Parking: tons of parking - it’s in a quiet and safe plaza in Pasadena.

My recent dining experience at Kisen Arcadia was nothing short of exceptional. Starting with the small dishes and miso soup, each element contributed to the overall satisfaction of the meal.

Freshness is paramount when it comes to sashimi, and Kisen Arcadia delivered impeccably. Each slice was a testament to quality and skill, offering a taste experience that left me longing for more. To complement the sashimi, I also ordered the "Ankimo" Monk Fish Liver, and it was a revelation.

Sushi Kisen continues to punch well above its weight and it is 1/3 the price for the same quality as some of the now outrageously expensive sushi places in LA.

For about $120, our omakase today included about 10 courses and 2 additional pieces we selected at the end. The quality of the nigiri is self-evident, particularly with the chutoro and the Nemuro uni. Another particular favorite was shiro-ebi. The chef confirmed that it is from Toyama. It should be mentioned that some pieces are ever so slightly on the saltier side (I confirmed that they do season with a drop of salt on some pieces), which I ended up liking but it might be a surprise to some. Extra points for the shari, which was flavorful on its own without taking away from the fish. I also highly recommend asking the chef if they have any seasonal items. We were very pleasantly surprised by our tsuika orders.

When I do not have the time to enjoy an omakase at the bar, I would recommend their chirashi bowls.

All I'm going to say is this place is authentic. You'll know when you arrive. Even the menu had cultural etiquette list might be useful to know for some who are new to sushi or to Japanese cuisine. Anyway, food was great. Their Edomae dinner set came with a different miso soup than regular ones, the variety of sushi on the plate was atypical. I know most sushi places try to cheap you out on these set menus - this place did not. Highly recommended.

Although I was really not satisfied with my waitress' professionalism, I don't want to deny this sushi restaurant's endeavor because of this issue.
This sushi restaurant has the best sushi rice "shari" blended with excellent proprietary vinegar I ever tasted in the US so far. They also process their topping "neta" very well as too.
I wish they could be aware one of their waitress had professionalism issue because this can hurt their perception and ruin their effort.
Overall, I still recommend this place.

Review №75

I was hesitant to write this review as I have been here 3 times. Food and service was great the first two times but the third visit we were not happy with.

The Good:
We got to our omakase early and they accommodated us for that. The sushi was good and the fish was fresh. The last two times I visited Sushi Kisen the service was great and we overall had a good time which was why I spoke very highly of this restaurant and decided to bring one of my friends who has never been here before for the first time.

The Bad:
While having a conversation with my friend, I got stung by a bee on the right side of my head. Grabbed the bee with a napkin and pulled the stinger out from the side of my head. I was very surprised when I felt a sharp sting on the right side of my head and exclaimed in pain. However, I didn't want to cause a scene and bother the other diners so I just tried to ignore the pain left it at that.

It was after I got stung by the bee we experienced probably one of the worst services by a Japanese omakase restaurant. To start, one the chefs that was service the couple next to us blamed me for bringing the bee inside and explained that he always gets stung by bees at home and its not a big deal and that I stung probably because of the color of the black shirt I was wearing.

The only apology we gotten was from the chef that was serving us and he had someone bring a soothing cream to the side of my head which is now visibly swollen. I wasn't allergic to bees so I decided to just shake it off and continue with our dinner despite the sharp pain on the side of my head.

After which, the service just went down. We didn't feel welcome at the restaurant as the staff looked at us with some sort of distain because of the bee sting incident. We asked for refills of our waters and tea on different occasions and only on the third ask we got it refilled. The chef didn't care about our experience and didn't even bother to plate our nigiri properly as it was all over the place.

We decided to end our dinner early because of this and didn't bother to finish the remaining courses.

We paid $294 including tip for the omakase for two because we didn't finish the remaining courses. I'm very disappointed at the service and the customer experience. I spoke very highly of this place before and this was a very solid place for omakase in Arcadia but I don't know if I can recommend again.

The warm color of the natural wood makes one feel welcome and comfortable. Dine LA restaurant week menu is a good sample of the menu, great way to try different things. The kaisen don and sashimi plate are of high quality. Black sesame ice cream is quite unique, first time for us. The only drawback of the dine LA menu is you can’t be seated at the sushi bar, which apparently is a great experience, but with a $80 minimum purchase.

Excellent food and service. My go to is the negitoro dinner set.

I've tried the negitoro bowl and the cut roll and both are amazing. The difference is whether you'd prefer to eat over a bed a sushi rice, poke bowl like mood, or having a clean bite to bite experience, trying to keep the food in your mouth rather than wearing it.

The quality of the fish is tremendous. Their ingredients taste so fresh and flavorful.

The staff are attentive and very sweet.

The lychee ice cream is more like a slush if you prefer that, but I'll be getting the matcha ice cream next time.

Heard they are the best omakase in Arcadia. But if you look at these pictures and tell me it’s the best in town, I will be very disappointed.

The omakase set is not really an omakase it’s just sushi pieces you can order from a regular menu and it’s noting special. Their so called omakase does not include any special creative food or display just plain sushi. And no hot dishes is included either.

I also highly recommend to train their stuff better for communication and English r side I was blamed by the manager for making a legit complain. I was mislead and paid for something I was not there for. I would not sit down and dine there if I understand how they works, and the manager treat me like I was an idiot🙃, and don’t kno what omakase is even though I work for a radio station as food Channel host.

Great food, great service, but be aware they use MSG in some of their food. I usually don't have a reaction to it, but this time came home felt really tired and was feeling very thirsty the whole day.

The minute I was walking in to have dinner they forced me to spend $100 per person and specific number of tops, I never been there before and we had to leave the 6 of us and go somewhere else maybe easy when you eat sushi spend $100 but I don’t like this ignorant Chinese rules where they always ask you for money and they don’t care about you as customer, we should all not support business like that specifically when cross street they have the best sushi in town with highest quality…

A worthy Japanese restaurant to have a try. Without going to little Tokyo in Downtown, you can taste the quality Japanese food in our little town, Arcadia.

I have been eyeing this restaurant since it’s opened. It took over a noodle shop next to Chef Tony. The new modern look gives this restaurant an appealing attraction. Without going inside, I had already liked the restaurant.

The food are excellent as well. You can have omakase at the counter($80 per person) or ala carte from the menu. During lunch, there are lunch sets available.

We went for lunch during a weekday as we weren’t able to make a reservation for the weekends. We tried the ala carte menu. The sashimi were very fresh from the lunch combo we ordered. The tuna meats were tender and melt in your mouth. The grilled chicken was perfectly cooked rendering juicy and tender meats. But they don’t provide teriyaki sauce as the authentic Japanese restaurants don’t rely on the sauces to make their food taste good.

My wife loved their Chawanmushi ( Japanese egg custard). It’s so smooth. I tried to cook this dish at home and I am still having problem mastering the timing for a smooth egg custard.

Overall, this Japanese restaurant is a fresh breath addition to the the Arcadia culinary scenes. Will definitely go back to try their nigiri sushi which many of our fellow Yelpers were raving about.

Secret menu - hairy crab all the way. Friend recommended to check this place out and it's definitely a secret gem in the 626. Vibe is upscale sushi restaurant with Japanese speaking staff. First time seeing more Japanese folks than the typical 626 crowd which says a lot. Definitely request to hear about their secret/ off menu items which the hairy crab definitely worth the price and the crab brains. Great appetizer item while catching up with friends.

Took one star off because I felt like the staff didn't want me to order the whole crab instead only half. Never thought I'd have to repeat myself multiple times to order an item. I understand they wanted to inform me of the price and do their due diligence in making sure we didn't order too much. It wasn't a great start to the dinner service feeling frustrated during the order process.

Quick Summary
Finally a solid, authentic Japanese restaurant in Arcadia. Came here for lunch and pretty good quality fish and sushi rice. They are a bit understaffed at the moment, but it's probably the best sushi restaurant in Arcadia

Food- 5 stars
Sashimi lunch- very solid fish quality. Portions are fair and all the appetizers were good (vegetables, tofu, and miso soup)

Sushi lunch- solid fish quality. Sushi rice was delicious and everything was the perfect temperature.

Deluxe sushi lunch- same as above

Service- 4 stars
The servers were good and approachable. However, they were a bit understaffed, which led to a wait to get into the restaurant (they had plenty of empty tables when it first opened, but not enough staff to manage all the tables), and also a longer wait to get our food. It's forgivable during these tough times

Ambiance- 5 stars
Very modern and clean Japanese sushi restaurant. Everything looked newly renovated and it appears they spent a lot of resources on the renovations

Bottom Line
Finally a solid, authentic sushi restaurant in Arcadia. Definitely worth a try if you're in the area and are craving sushi

Sit at the bar with Omasake, it was great experience. The baby squid was amazing, Me and my business friends were hesitated to try, it was actually VERY GOOD!

And the sushi chef prepared was top notch, you could have spend a lot more in some big cities.

So it’s a really value choice and I can see us coming back soon.

First time there was for business dinner, didn't really get to enjoy the beautiful meal, this time we decided to go directly to the sushi bar and had omakase, we went as walk in on a Saturday, lucky enough to have hiro be our chef, definitely should make a reservation next time. Food was amazing, must go in the area.

Located in (iconic to me) an old plaza that used to house the original LA Dintaifung. It’s tucked away in a corner spot so don’t miss it.

One of my favorite sushi omakase spots. Reservations are easy- either DM on IG or just call.

I’m usually here for the omakase with some cool fish you sometimes don’t see at other places. The sushi bar is where you should be at but I’ve also seen families with babies opt for tables. Service is great, sushi is fresh what more can you ask for?

Some notable courses…
- seared toro
- ice fish
- handrolls
- different aji( I love aji)
- sea snail
- ankimo…

Love the decorations of this restaurant because it is modern. The food they are serving seemed to be authentic japanese food. They are fully staffed and servers are very welcoming. Service was fast!

The food looks amazing as they are well decorated. We ordered New York steak sashimi dinner and salmon sashimi dinner. I requested to have a little more salad because I cannot eat rice. The server was super nice that she made this happened.

The food was too salty in general. The pickled vegetable, salad, New York steak, and salmon. I drank a lot of water after my dinner. I might have to request for less salt next time when I come by.

We had omakase at the sushi bar. It was some of the best and most authentic sushi we've had! Super friendly service and wonderful atmosphere.

Reservations highly recommended and the sushi bar seems to have a $80/person minimum.

This is my very first rating for any restaurant on any platform. Best sushi for the price I’ve had outside of Japan period. Not trying to do to much to take away from the quality of the rice and fish. Everything was served at the correct temperature with the best textures for both the rice and fish. I’d rather you didn’t like it, so I’d be able to get a spot at the bar anytime I wanted.
