Coffee Shop No. 433
Blue Oak Coffee Co.
Bakersfield, CA
October 11, 2024
On the corner of 20th and G Street in downtown Bakersfield sits a quaint little cafe, Blue Oak Coffee Roasting. Although it's a small place (indoor seating is limited) the cafe serves bold and delicious espresso drinks. The decor was pretty fabulous. The wood accent wall caught my attention. Two gentlemen I had never met were sitting at the arm chairs so I decided to embarrass my teenager and ask the gentlemen if I could take their picture in front of the wall; which they kindly obliged to.
Somehow I forgot to take a picture of my cortado. I don't think that has happened in the last three years of my life.
After joyfully sipping on my cortado I took my son to the opposite corner of the block to see the Historic Bakersfield Fox Theater.
Enjoying life one cortado at a time! Even if no picture was taken to prove it!

The coffee is delicious, and if you ask, sheβll make it to your exact liking and remember your order for next time. The baked goods are simply so delicious. Wish I could tell you how great everything was. There was a line right at 8am, so I was hopeful, however, once inside we waited 25m and were never greeted and our order was never taken. There was only 1 person working so she took an order, cashed them out, then made their order, repeat. It was extremely slow. Someone in line behind us left. Then we left. 25 minutes in line is excessive. There needed to be at least one more person to help. Too bad, we were looking forward to trying new small shop joints in town.

I went and waited five minutes last Saturday (9.14.24, a little after 10:15 am), but no one was ever at the counter.
Based on the owner's response: I originally planned to remove my review, but the reply was so defensive and accusatory, essentially calling me a liar, that I felt compelled to clarify a few things. First, I did not actually see a barista. You donβt know who I am, and you certainly canβt claim to know what I observed. I included the times in my review to highlight what might be an ongoing issue, not because I had any ill will or negative agenda.
This was my first visit, and I was genuinely interested in trying your place. However, the dismissive and combative response makes it highly unlikely that Iβll return. Had the owner responded with more professionalism and class, I would have gladly given the benefit of the doubt. Instead, the poor handling of feedback has cost you a potential customer.
That said, Iβm rooting for you, Blue Oakβhopefully, youβll learn from this response and do better in the future.

Not only is the coffee delicious here, the staff is super sweet. There are a few little coffee places popping up around Bakersfield that we really enjoy, Blue Oak definitely being one of the best! One fun thing about this coffee house is there seems to be a lot of community involvement. I went in today and they had paints and things out (for kids I think) and on our first visit they had a community piano out front.
In addition to their coffees and teas, they always have a delectable array of freshly baked goods which they bake on site. Today they had HP inspired cookies, funfetti cookies, chocolate chip cookies, linzer tart (which is super yummy, I got that last time!), a variety of scones (both savoury and sweet), and bagels. I want to mention again-the coffee is phenomenal.
I have only been twice so far, the first time was about a month ago, with my boyfriend. Today only I came in and placed both of our orders but the owner remembered us and his order! (nothing crazy that would stand out, either. Just an iced mocha with a splash of half and half.) The fact that the proprietor remembered us is an exceptional detail; that level of service is astounding.

Place is cosy with a super local vibe, great coffee and pastries options, I recommend the honey vanilla iced latte, or the house iced tea, simply amazing. Not a place to drop by for coffee if you are in a hurry though, they take their time to make you and everyone else a good cup of coffee, if there's some people before you be ready to wait a bit, it's worth it.

This little gem was short lived. Something must have happened because they are always closed. Never open any more. The lady that worked there was sweet but after I saw police there and it barricaded off a few weeks ago it has not been open.
Update/Reply To Owner - That is so horrible to hear. Sorry you are going through such turmoil. Maybe consider joining the Downtown Business Association? I believe they have an agreement with a security company that offers security at a discounted rate for members. =)

Fantastic service. Spinach croissant was dry and overcooked. Banana bread coffee was really delicious but didn't taste much coffee. The atmosphere made me as Christian very uncomfortable. I'm all about you doing what you want in your business but the pagan symbolism isn't for me. I don't think I will be going back.

Since Starbucks burns their coffee beans, I seek out small coffee places when traveling. The lady was by herself so service was slow, but she was very sweet. I got a brewed coffee. I believe it was a dark roast which was surprising. Most places will pick a medium roast for their brewed pot. I do not like dark roasts, but this one was ok. It wasn't burnt and had some good flavor.

I went in to have a nice cup of coffee with my husband this morning but the person helping us was very rude. When I told her nicely that my coffee was not hot and that I had asked for extra hot when I ordered,, she was curt and down right impolite. She actually scolded me and told me not to repeat my words. She then took it inside for a bit then came back and put it on the counter without saying a word to me. Iβm sure she reheated it in the microwave which is not ok. All in all it was a bad experience and needless to say, she lost a customer today.

My mom has been to this coffee shop before and liked it so she brought my dad today so they could spend some time together. She asked for her usual order βmocha extra hotβ and they made it for her much too cold. When she informed them of this mixup the person at the register scolded her (pun unintentional) and insinuated she was being too demanding. The person was so awful to my mother that the person behind her in line said βwow, she was so rude to you. Iβm taking my business elsewhereβ and promptly walked out of the establishment. The person working continued being rude to my mom while her and my dad were there and left both my parents very offended and hurt. They live nearby and are upset to have to find a new coffee shop to frequent.

Staff was very nice and very knowledgeable about the ingredients and nutritional facts for their products. Haven't had a butter beef-flavored latte in a long time and it tasted amazing! But I had to leave a star off for none of the staff wearing a face mask during the covid-19 pandemic, especially in one of the fastest-spreading areas in California. I absolutely love this coffee shop, but probably won't visit again until the staff wear masks or the pandemic is overnight. As germophobes, it made us nervous!

We stopped by lunch next door on the way to King's Canyon, and saw this place by accident. I bought a bag of their espresso beans that was freshly roasted. It smells and tastes great. People inside seem nice and friendly. What is not great, however, is their mask policy. No one inside is wearing, and the sign outside basically saying it's OK not to wear because they cannot question you due to HIPAA. I literally saw a customer taking off his mask at the door before entering. This is why I did not order a cup to go, as I did not find this practice healthy in a facility that prepares consumables openly. You know who else don't care about politics and our opinion on masks? COVID virus, and the 251 people died in Kern county. I hope this establishment reconsider their approach for everybody's good.

Blue Oak had a cozy atmosphere. The coffee was not bad, but nothing especially fantastic either, and it didnβt have a public bathroom (as indicated by multiple signs on the wall). This last fact is inexcusable for a sit-down establishment that specializes in coffee (a diuretic). The owners seriously need to take note: open a public restroom, even if itβs available to patrons only. Sitting in a coffee shop with a throbbing bladder does not invite a repeat experience.

One can taste the love and time put into Blue Oak's beverages. Their natural hand-made syrups are amazing. A symphony of herbs, florals and spices to tickle your tastebuds.

Had a great latte here: medium with an extra shot. One of the best lattes I've had in a long time. Also picked up some apple cider donuts to share. These were really good craft donuts. Very rich and kind of intense (I only ate half of one and I was good). Not your typical donut.

Great Atmosphere. Everything is always delicious. Love this local coffee shop.

Best chai in town! They make their own concentrate instead of pouring from a box like most coffee shops

This place is absolutely amazing! The owner is the sweetest woman! I went there to try a special they had going on...and the I went back the next day for the same thing. I asked if they always have it and she said no, but if I message them on facebook, she will make it if she knows I am coming in! And she did just that for me one day! There coffee and food is to die for and you cant beat the personal service!

Hands down one of the best coffee places in Bakersfield. The ladies in there are the sweetest most down to earth people and really care about their customers. The coffee is amazing and so are the baked goodies. This is my go too spot for coffee on my days off 10 out 10 would definitely recommend to anyone

Fabulous customer service, delicious apple cider donuts and one amazing banana bread latte. Love the vibe and the decor. Will be coming back!

The staff are really nice and the pastries are incredible! The only downside is the pastries are not consistent from day to day so you never know if your fav thing will be available. I like that they have a lot of local products available for purchase in store as well.

With all of the new coffee shops in town, Blue Oak stands out with their creative drinks and flavors. They have a featured drink every day and honestly if work was closer downtown I'd make it in every day. All bakery items are made in-house and they also have bagged coffee, jams, and other goods for sale all around the shop.
Personal favorites are the baklava iced latte + cheddar chive scone.
Tip: If you don't like your lattes and other specialty drinks sweet, be sure to mention it! Most drinks I've tried here are pretty sweet and definitely more enjoyable with the sweetness cut down. I also 100% enjoy black coffee, so if that's not your thing then you do you - just make sure to grab a scone or apple cider donut while you're there!

I found all aspects of this establishment more than fantastic. The coffee, the nourishments, and the atmosphere were great. The staff is energetic and enthusiastic about what they sell, and they have a right to be. Most definitely to be a return customer.

Absolutely love Bernadette and Cynthia. Thier coffee and espresso drinks are best in town, and their baked goods are delightful. The strawberry scones are a little ball of fluffy, delicious heaven!! (And are currently my favorite). They have also introduced a raw/vegan takeaway menu that I have not tried yet, but looks well crafted and thought out. Everything here is made with passion and love of craft βyou can clearly taste it. I look forward to their delights each day!

New coffee roasters that just opened up recently obviously show their love for coffee amazing drinks they put out. I commonly order the breve which is espresso with steamed half and half. The coffee they use taste extremely high-quality and fresh. I refuse to go to Starbucks, and dagny's down the street is losing its luster what they do change of ownership and half-assed coffees. Give this place to try and you will find that it's not overly hipster and it is very relaxing. They are also very friendly towards my dog being inside. This place take the pretentiousness out of coffee and put the love and flavor back in it.

Nice people. Cozy spot. They should fill up the front refrigerators so it doesn't look like they're going out of business.

Such a cozy, friendly and delicious coffehouse. They roast their own beans and have a specialty coffee of the day. The drink I ordered was initially too sweet for my liking
The barista modified it for me and it was absolute perfection which then led to a little acroyoga on their beautiful blue chairs, which they graciously photographed.
