This place is an absolute gem! It's a cozy little restaurant with a great staff! My party ordered the wor wonton soup, along with salt and pepper chicken wings, and it was absolutely delicious! This was by far, the best work wonton soup I have had in Bakersfield, CA. For a drink, I ordered an iced lychee green tea which was phenomenal! I will definitely be a regular here with my family.

I've only recently discovered SSC: the quality and quantity for the price is excellent. I'd go to LA monthly for errands and p/c up food in Chinatown (off Broadway; not Mont Park). This business is just as good if not better. Case in point, neither restaurants uses excessive, filler bean sprouts, but here in our fair city of Bako SSC puts in a big chunk of veggie, which is highly appreciated. (Haven't dined in yet but noticed observant service.) As a 68 yr old ABC who was born and raised in the Bay Area, transplanted to Kern County in 1990 where I worked and retired (central conservative CA valley: it doesn't get any better in our state!) I know my shit based on experiential knowledge. Gave 4/5 stars on atmosphere b/c although the lighting is adequate, could use a few more lumens over the table. No big deal, very subjective. Yet this whole subject is subjective, so I'll end by saying that Soy & Spice Cafe was worth checking out as I've become a regular customer.

This was a great spot with good food made to order. The staff is attentive and friendly. Ordered enough food to take to work. I Highly recommend the Salt and Pepper Shrimp. I will definitely try their spicier foods next time I visit.

Update 5/7/23: Still such good dishes. Tried something new from last time. This time was pad thai! You get to pick your heat level 1-5. The peanuts are on the side & you can add to your liking.

We recently just tried them and we're so happy we did. It's local, small business, family owned which means they actually care about good Customer Service and doing things right. We ordered the family meal. It was so flavorful! We couldn't substitute some items but overall still good.

If you want large portions and tasty food, this is a good place to go. Surprisingly large portions, glad I don't live close. Otherwise, I would get so faaatttt. Would come again next time I'm in the area.

The place is really nice and clean, our waiter was really sweet and made sure we had a good experience. They are reasonably priced and aren't stingy with the food by any means. I order the combo orange/teriyaki chicken with rice and chow mein, my friend ordered the combo rice with shrimp, bbq chicken, and it was also a big serving. I came straight from work and even with an appetite after working all day, I couldn't finish my food. I will definitely be back

Fantastic Chinese favorites with great flavor and portions. Delicious Kung Pao and sweet and sour chicken. Fried wonton were perfectly light and Crispy with a tasty filling. So Happy to have them in the SW side.

When I walked in was not greeted, only customer in the building. Ordered the lunch special, which showed 8.99
Later to pay 15.41 don’t know what kind of tax that is. The food was not worth it, so bland. Terrible service for terrible Asian food.

(First off, please ignore any " one star" or "two star" reviews!)
It has been a long time since I have experienced such great effort in serving very fresh, and piping hot food, delivered as quickly as this place has done today. On top of that, the very good news is that the portions were so enormous and generous, that I could not finish my dinner and had to take it home....Awesome!!!
And truly faithful pho, etc!

I decided to order from here because of the ratings. The food sucked! The orange chicken barely had any meat in them. They were hollow inside. Barely any chicken in it. Then either my noodles or rice tasted burned. It had a burned taste! Not happy at all.

This place is definitely a hidden gem. The food is always delicious and never disappoints with authentic flavors. Portion sizes for the price are excellent. Plenty of variety on the menu for whatever Asian cuisine you’re craving. The wait staff is top notch and extremely friendly. Their dining room is always clean too!

The lunch special (M-F: 11-3pm) $7.99 fresh, fast & tasty. I chose all chowmein w/Kung pao. Veggies were crunchy (not soggy). I loved the chunky celery. Even came with a crispy veggie roll & a side of sauce. I was just on this side of town & needed a quick bite. Would definitely recommend. Oh & the service was fast & friendly too.

Ordered a combo plate with orange chicken and sweet and sour pork. I was very disappointed in both, the orange chicken was dried up batter didn't even taste chicken. The sweet and sour pork had no sauce or flavor. The only think ok was a Thai tea I got.

Excellent food preparation! What they offer is authentic. Great staff, helpful and friendly. Standouts are the pad Thai, drunken noodles, salt and pepper combo, and yellow curry. Comparative to other restaurants offering this pan Asian cuisine, they hold their own with lower price, higher service and quality of the dishes served.
Will return often.

First time Soy & Spice’er here and we will be back. It was a quiet Thursday night and we were the only ones in the restaurant. The decor is minimal, but clean. Booths are roomy and comfortable. Service was too-notch. My daughter ordered the teriyaki chicken plate. It was a lot of food for the $8 price. My husband ordered a two item plate, and again, lots of food for the price. I got the Pho. It was delicious and had all the normal trimmings.

I've had their potstickers, egg flower soup, orange chicken, broccoli beef, and of course chow mein and fried rice. Every time I pick up my order the food has been delicious. Definitely give this place a try!

Quick Summary
One of the best Thai restaurants I've been to (which includes Thailand and LA). Quality is the name of the game here, so expect to wait a bit as nothing is pre-made and everything is made to order

Food- 5 stars
I tried the green curry and the pad see ew. One of the best I've ever had. The curry was rich, creamy and delicious. Pad see ew was cooked to perfection as well (perfect balance of sweet and savory). Portions are large here as well. It's a combination of quality and quantity so it's a win-win all around

Service- 5 stars
The servers were very attentive and the chef even comes out to check on how you're doing with the food. The layout of the restaurant is simple and clean, and I did appreciate how they had pictures of the different countries which reflected the food they served (Hong Kong/China, Vietnam, Thailand). Keep in mind that everything is made to order so expect a bit of a wait for your food

Value- 5 stars
Both plates were delicious and came with large portions. 2 orders can easily feed a party of 4 and you're not breaking the bank either

Bottom Line
One of the first things I hear about Bakersfield is the lack of Asian food options. Soy and Spice Cafe completely changed by outlook on the Asian food scene here, as the quality of food outshined most places in LA. With great food, large portions, and good service, I've found my favorite Thai food spot.

I probably would leave 3 stars cause I'm not sure it's worth 4. The food isnt bad. And it certainly isnt some of the best chinese I've had. I had the combo rice, veggie chow main, fried veggie rolls and a small side of orange chicken. The orange chicken definitely wasn't made fresh to order, at least it didnt taste like it. The chicken was overly fried slightly turning some of the pieces to jerky. Lol. The flavor is good. Everything was barely a touch above mediocre. I couldn't eat all the food so I'm definitely taking it home. It would be decent left overs. I'll be happy to have it later on or tomorrow! Again not quite woth 4 stars but maybe a a good 3.5! Will I be back? Let's just hope there's better Chinese around here. Let's just say I wouldn't bring out of towners here to dine. I'd want better quality to show off! But over all wasn't a bad experience

Their Pho is really good. Especially the beef broth one. This time I tried the chicken pad thai and it was a bit too sweet for my taste. We also tried their orange chicken plate and we were disappointed. The food was cold and the orange chicken had too much sauce. They seem a little short staffed and they seemed to have some upset customers while we waited for our order to come out. We do appreciate the indoor seating they had available, but hopefully they figure things out so they don't lose customers in the future.

Wow, it is Valentines day and I am here for my first time. I asked the chef to surprise me. I got the Mongolian Beef and I was completely impressed. What a flavor and so delicious. I believe I have new favorite Hotspot. Highly recommend....

Was recommended by a friend to try this place. Me and the wife have been looking for a good chinese spot for a while now. Honestly not impressed. When we first arrived there was no one at the front we waited for 5 min. Not to much of big deal. When we got our food I asked for sweet and sour sauce and seemed as if I was bothering her 😣 and she came back with the tiniest cap of sauce as if to say " here are u happy now'. The food was blah , rice was under cooked. I will never hit this spot again theres gotta be a better chinese restaurant out here.

1st time trying it, food was very tasty. I tried the Mongolian Beef, plate was full of onion and bell peppers had very little beef. That is my only complaint $12.00 meal for 5 small pieces of meat.

I stopped by for some Pho today 8/28/2020. The combo Pho has shrimp...something that shouldn't be there in this type of soup. In addition, the broth was extremely salty. The bean sprouts were old and smelly. I will never visit this place again.

First time trying, placed a pick up and my order was ready in like 5 mins!! AMAZING, I got a combo plate of orange chix and chow mein, I feel like for any asian spot you have to try the commonly found food, orange chix and chow mein is that. The orange chix was still crispy and the sauce was not overly sweet. The chow mein was good, had a lot of veggies all shredded, I hate when places get lazy and cut the veggies all big, and it wasnt greasy!!! Also got the combination fried rice, which I loved, had good amounts of all the meats and they put bean sprouts in it, which was surprisingly good.

My favorite place to eat in town. My husband and I have been eating at this place for months now and the food is always a hit. We’ve tried the pho, drunken noodles, egg & veggie rolls, curry and so on. Servings are huge and well worth the price. The soups always last me a couple of days.

Love this place. Has authentic Thai food. Tried the drunken noodles and it was delicious. The best Thai drunken noodles I've ever had so I ordered a second order with shrimp and no veggies. One of my all time favorite places to eat! The pho, is our comfort soup ..we eat it often & it always makes us feel better..., when we're feeling under the weather.
My ALL TIME FAVORITE DISH IS DRUNKEN NOODLE SHRIMP❤🥳❤🥳🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I GET ZERO SPICE.... they have 5 levels of spice, for those of you who like it hot. 😁
Also has a yummy, inexpensive lunch special, with like 4 or 5 items on your plate. My mom and I share every meal. Good size portions for girls...not for guys though.

This is our new go to place on the Southside of town. Service is really friendly and the prices are great. We get the family meal every time and there's something for everyone. Wait staff is attentive but never hovers and they are awesome with kids.

I had the Hong Kong soup. It had wontons, pork, beef and shrimp in it. The portion size was large and the price was reasonable. There is not much to be said about the ambiance but the food is delicious. I will definetly be back here when I am hungry.

Delicious food! My family of 4 had the following items and they were all very delicious! Brisket pho, shrimp pho, shrimp fried rice, and their lunch combo- chow mein, rice, broccoli beef, and orange chicken! All the items were really good! Great lunch combo deal $6.99! The mango tea was a bit too sweet for our taste. The place itself is not big at all, but it was clean and the service was good. My kids and hubby loved it too! Will definitely come back again :)
