Service is great! The sushi, et al, is exactly the quality you would expect. The facility and the ambiance are well let s say eclectic spartan to say the least! I have felt more warm and comfortable at various Waffle Houses throughout the country! It s very much an Emperor has no clothes situation. Most patrons are too pretentious to accept that the place is the equivalent to a double wide trailer home! (Possibly smaller). I will still give it four stars but in truth that s in homage to the brand, not this particular location. Hey, it s LA!

I will speak as Japanese who is working in LA. Servers are not attentive at all. Food is mediocre, No wonder this place is not even selected by MICHELIN Guide and Top 50 although Nobu personally is taking cared of this place day and night. Nothing special about their food. Food taste like some sort of OVERPRICED home-made cooking from 80s in Japan. No one would be happy to be served 80s style food at this price. First of all, no one who isnt fooled by the price will think its delicious. Same food would costs around $10 in Japan and taste much better. Matsuhisa is whatever, anyone can make same flavor these days, so this place is nothing special but OVER PRICED and Dying Hype. OVER, WAY OVER PRICED. I wonder What sort of justification the management think that they can apply in their pricing strategies so they can charge such prices for these whatever dishes. Its too harsh to think that a Japanese person will take 80,000 to 100,000 yen from the bill after going out to eat just by asking the name. Nothing tastes good. The price structure has collapsed considerably. Im not saying that the higher the price, the better. Are you thinking about management? Dont kid yourself. This is almost a highway robbery using Japanese Cuisine name and deception to the customers. Do not be an idiot, there are so much better restaurants around LA serving much better Japanese food. Its not delicious so theres no need to go there.

Decline and fall! Once an exceptional restaurant run by an amazing chef has declined into a fair to middling restaurant (and that s me being more than fair). I ve been coming to Matsuhisa for the last 20 years, but on this occasion, I am unimpressed! We arrive and are seated in a tent in the carpark. The tent had no dΓ©cor, no ambience was cold, and I can only say could have been a service station for refugees with slightly better chairs to sit on. We asked to be seated in the main restaurant to be told we would have to wait a very long time. We decided to order starters whilst we booked another sushi place elsewhere. We ordered 2 cut rolls and popcorn shrimp which we waited over 30 minutes for. I ve had better sushi at supermarkets and the shrimp was average, not what I ve had the pleasure of eating over the years. I mentioned to the concierge how shocked I was to which his reply was it s not a preference for everyone. For those people whose preference is it to sit in a tent in a carpark and pay through the roof for mediocre food, they are clearly as deluded as the chef who thinks his name can carry widespread loyalty through this obvious decline! For refence we went to KOI for the main course, where the service, food and ambience was amazing! I highly recommend KOI. I DO NOT recommend MATSUHISA.

Its like a unique evolution of Japanese tradition, and its a new perspective and a wealth of ideas that can almost be called something else. Its wonderful I was as shocked as when I saw Milk Boys manzai for the first time. Just like in Japan, we still use fresh locally caught fish and age it to bring out its flavor, but is the method used to bring out the deliciousness of the ingredients not called Edomae but pre-California? Even the same sushi can be different or even special. My favorite flavor was the crab shell and watermelon dish served on one plate. Its a fun experience to know that fries that contain the flavor of crab and juicy fruits go so well together! Like Matsu-chan and Ucchan when they teamed up for the New Years Dream Manzai, the royal road is the royal road, but depending on how you look at it, it feels like the evil road. Is it when you enjoy a meal when you have an experience youve never had before or when you come across a great idea? Im not sure, but, Its delicious, so Ill summarize that you should try it. Please refer to the photo.

Where to begin with this place. All anyone seems to say is its the founder of Nobus first restaurant which I feel is the only thing it has going for it. The food was probably the worst food Ive ever eaten. Who decided tempura avocado was ever a good idea!? Tiny shrimp tacos which couldnt have tasted more bland if they tried on the special menu that cost $11 each! All capped off by being sat in what can only be described as a freezing cold COVID tent with two heaters between the entire room. We asked to move the heater closer to our large table and were told we couldnt because other people had complained about being cold... Says it all really! Dont believe the hype (please! ) go to Nobu or literally any other restaurant in town and save yourself the experience.

What an immense disappointment. Having eaten at Nobu previously I was excited to try his first restaurant Matsuhisa. The experience here couldnt have been more opposite than that of Nobu. Vibe: we were seated outside in a side patio because the restaurant was completely booked for a private party on a Saturday night? The first table they placed us at was right next to the waiter station and the view was of cleaning supplies and dirty plates. We asked to be moved to another table. Still the surroundings is a picnic table on AstroTurf. The outdoor heaters were on so strong and so hot I was afraid they would cook the sushi. Thankfully they turned them off. Service: Our server could not have been more disinterested or uncaring. She was going through the motions. On four separate occasions we had food delivered to our table that wasnt ours. Right after we ordered, a server dropped off take home containers in the middle of our table which we never asked for. The tempura shrimp was soggy and limp and I asked the waitress if it was supposed to be that way or crispy. She said crispy. I said again that it was soggy. She suggested I not order it anymore!? At the end of dinner we were delivered the wrong check. Food: it was good but most of the fish was very salty and as I stated previously the tempura was soggy. While the food was good it was nowhere near worth the price paid. You expect for the cost of $200pp to have an exceptional experience in ambiance, service and food. Honestly they failed in every regard and I cannot recommend wasting your time or money here. It is obviously a management issue if they fail in every regard as they did. Ill be surprised if the restaurant management responds to this at all. I really dont think they care. This restaurant was Nobus first and it seems largely abandoned and forgotten. Like a forgotten grandmother at a nursing home. It feels tired and dated and well beyond its expiration date. What a waste of time and money. I could have had a much more elevated experience at so many other places at 1/4 the price.

Thank you Chef Yoshi and the entire staff for the amazing food and service. My regret, not dining here sooner and only other complaint- its packed and very loud with limited space but that can be a good thing for some. In the realm of Los Angeles sushi, none surpasses the culinary enchantment found at the birthplace of Nobus mastery. Within its expansive menu lies a cornucopia of delights, each dish a testament to the impeccable quality of fish and rice. I suggest to venture beyond the familiar and embrace the unexpected. I can never forget the sensation of rice dissolving effortlessly on the palate. Obviously this is not Nobu s only restaurant in Los Angeles, but this one in particular bears a unique lokey charm. Yohji for example has been there nearly three to four decades (can t remember exactly) but this stands testament to the enduring legacy of this venerable institution. Do not skip on this beautiful restaurant.

I stumbled upon Matsuhia on the recommendation of a guest services person, who told me that the chef was famous locally. Despite my initial scepticism about the exterior of the restaurant, I was blown away by the incredible food I tasted. It was a five minute walk from the hotel. I ordered some sushi rolls and other dishes for takeaway, and while waiting for my order to be prepared, I could hear their phone ringing off the hook with customers calling in to make reservations for lunch and dinner. It was clear that this chefs reputation preceded him! The decor inside the restaurant may be a little outdated and not the highest quality, but the food more than made up for it. In fact, I would even say that the food was Michelin Star quality - it was that good. As someone who loves trying new restaurants and unique food, I was pleasantly surprised to find this hidden gem. What I thought would just be a quick takeaway ended up being one of the best meals Ive had in a long time, and its priced moderately, too. The service was friendly and engaging, and I appreciated that the chef has even produced a recipe book for those who want to try making his wonderful food at home. Overall, Matsuhia is a must-try for any foodie, whether youre looking for a sit-down restaurant experience or just some tasty takeaway to enjoy in your hotel room. It was a true surprise to find another great restaurant that serves takeaway, and I cant recommend it enough!

We had made dinner reservations 2 weeks ago for a party of 4 on 5/12/23 at 6:30pm to celebrate my daughters graduation. We arrived at 6pm and the host said he would be able to seat us early however he could only offer us the sushi bar or the parking lot which they called a patio. We asked to be seated in the restaurant and he said there were no tables available inside when clearly half the restaurant was empty. We asked how long it would be to wait for a table inside and he said if he gave us a table in the restaurant, we would need to complete our meal in one hour. We asked why we were not able to get a table inside when we had reservations from 2 weeks ago and all he could say is Im sorry, I understand and thats all I can do. He said I have other guests that have made reservations. We have never been treated so disrespectfully at any establishment. We left and had a wonderful dinner at Mastros in Beverly Hils, and enjoyed a delicious meal with respectful, professional service. Just a note to everyone who is considering going to this restaurant, they dont care or respect your business.

This is a seriously overrated restaurant. We had 2 set dinners ; sushi and sashimi, white fish with uni , yellow tail ceviche. It was a huge disappointment . Quality / cut of the fish was dismissal and dry .The soup and salad was better. The whole staging of having a sushi counter with 4/5 dressed up sushi chefs and to serve that kind of quality is a real joke, if not a disgrace to the world of Japanese sushi chefs ! If there was ever a sushi / sashimi shogun and that I am one , I will decree a Harakari on them all. We are not in the habit of complaining, but ate politely , left a good tip, said our thank yous and make sure we never return.

Matsuhisa is so overrated. After hearing so much about this restaurant I finally decided to take my girlfriend here for Valentines Day. It was such a disappointment and I would never come back here again. I spent 400 dollars here for a party of 2. We ordered appetizers, sushi, dessert and sake as well. The food was incredibly overpriced and the quality of some of the dishes were questionable. The Scallop Kushiyaki was very dry even when it was drenched in teriyaki sauce. Initially I wanted to order the White Fish Tempura but the server suggested that I order the Tempura with their special sauce. Upon receiving the bill, I saw that adding the special sauce with red onions and jalapenos was an additional $20. The White Fish Tempura was already $14, so I ended up paying $34 for that dish. Not even for some special fish, Just plain fried white fish. The only thing I liked from this restaurant were the Golden Eye Snapper and the Akamutsu Sushi. I honestly cant recommend anything else. The ambiance of the restaurant is outdated and depressing. I felt a little crammed and there was nothing in the entire restaurant that I found unique or impressive. We sat inside, but I couldnt imagine sitting outside. Service was mediocre and the tip is automatically entered in your bill. Surely $70 is far too much for the service we received. Cheep quality, bad service, insanely overpriced and bad smell during the meal is just awful. The only reason this is not a 1 star review is because of 1 decent sashimi dish. I would never ever go back there again.

Amazing service paired with beautifully presented and delicious Japanese food. It was expensive, but every bite was absolutely worth it. This is a great place to stop by when you feel like treating yourself to some exceptional sushi.

So I have mixed feelings about this place. The food was pretty good, desert was ok. The food quality was great I just feel the food was not worth the ticket price. I have done fine dining and When a food experience is worth it, it just is and this was not.

Solid Omakase experience at Matsuhisa. We kicked off the meal with a sake flight and beer chasers. 1st Course: Kumamoto Oysters 2nd Course: Salad (Blue Fin Tuna / Sardine / Golden Eye Snapper) 3rd Course: White Fish / Sea Snails / Kampachi 4th Course: Nigiri including Uni 5th Course: Arctic Char / Ponzu Sauce 6th Course: Kobe Beef / Mushroom Risotto / Peruvian Miso Sauce Each course was well thought out. The flavors were really good and the flow via service was very professional. I d like to try a la carte options on my next visit. I ll definitely be back next time I m in BH.

The food was simply fantastic. The table setup is kind of strange. If you want to see famous people this is the place to go. When you go be sure and bring your wallet because a meal for two can easily run $225 - $400! But it is so worth. I had among other things salmon belly sushi. It melts in your mouth.

Tried to make a reservation, the guy would cut me off and put me on hold then would tell me to call back the following day then hung up on me. Im obviously not going to book here theres far to many sushi restaurants that are superior to here where they wont be so rude.

We just walked out. Matsuhisa used to be better. Booked a table for two for dinner but we had been sitting there for 20 minutes and service staff kept walking past. We were patiently waiting and had been trying to get attention but no service whatsoever. Don t have table available if you can t provide serve accordingly. I know it is not a fine dining but it is not a mall sushi place either. They should have better service. Katsuya is better and cheaper anyways. It was supposed to be hello again dinner, but ended up being a good bye dinner, well without dinner.

Had dinner and they were out of 1/2 the menu. Manager didn t even try to make the experience better. Said sry and didn t even offer anything. Should have told us prior to booking that they were gonna remodel. Manager name was Ron and was a little arrogant and walked off. Said he didn t have authority to do anything lol. Worst dining experience ever should have went to Chic Fil A Our server was great though, Iveel.

This restaurant has to be the most overhyped and overpriced establishment Ive ever been to in my life. The only good thing about it was fresh and delicious nigiri. Out of 5 people at the table it was the only dish liked by everybody, so we got two plates of those. Everything else was not even close to a high end experience this place should offer for the price they charge. Some of the dishes we ordered included: - Toro tartar with caviar. I found it very fishy and gross. The portion was the size of a bagel hole and was a whopping $40. - Scallops with kiwi. Boyfriend likes scallops, but he didnt like this dish at all. - hot eggplant appetizer. Good flavor, but too soft and soggy. - asparagus with red caviar. Not bad, but nothing amazing. - baked king crab. Small portion and nothing elevated about it. Would have been like a $10 dish at another sushi restaurant. But if I remember correctly it was around $40 here. - shrimp with mushrooms, green beans and carrots. Dont remember the name of the dish on the menu. Tasty, but the sauce was too spicy and the portion wasnt generous. - spicy tuna crispy rice. Good flavor, but I nearly broke my tooth chewing those cubes of crispy rice. - California roll for $20. Ordered for my 15 year old niece, because she was still hungry after trying all the aforementioned dishes and not loving any. She said it was an OK roll. - Pannacotta. Pretty good, but again - a tiny portion. The worst part of it all was when my sister in law and I decided to go inside (we dined outside on the patio) to use the restroom. To get to it you have to pass by multiple open kitchen rooms that look like you are in some cheap, old, rundown eatery where they openly cut a pig in front of passing customers. I legit felt like I was in a horror movie. What a terrible and off-putting experience this was! I would never come back to this place even if I was paid to eat here. Stay away!

How do I start this, this is such a Huge disappointment! Low quality NON Authentic Japanese food experience. Think Fusion at its lowest quality. I spent $200 for an 8 course omakase and not even ONE single item was good. First course a veggie hand roll. Really just veggies seaweed, Cucumber, carrot, avocado and sesame dressing. Nothing special. 2nd course Tuna tartar with caviar soaked in Ginger soy sauce, tuna tartar at BJ tasted the same as this... 3rd course nigiri 4 pieces (red snapper, toro, ikura, sardine) 4th- 6 pieces of Heavily sauced paperthin sashimi that is so salty, you cant tell what the fish is... first type of Paperthin sashimi has Yuzu sauce with bell peppers on it, the second paperthin sashimi has olive oil and red salt on it, the third one has oh yeah again yuzu sauce with Sriracha.... We should stop the courses right at this point....The sashimi is the worst fusion mix of overly oil, sauced, salted, sashimi I have ever had. I mean really who put oil and seasoning salt on sashimi so thin that all the sauce over powering the fish.... Believe me, the small sushi stand in the supermarkets taste better than this. And, again, one sashimi is red snapper again. 5th course-3 pieces of sashimi salad they Called it. The so call baby Artichoke that was not freshly chopped because the edges was Turing brown ... unpleasant to see and taste plus its so hard feel like chewing on cardboard. The three piece of Sashimi with again ginger soy sauce over powering everything pieces of fish.... Everything at this point taste the same. With the repeating overpowering sauces. Next is Fried softshell crab with overpowering vinegar Bell pepper sauce. An very badly twisted/ take of the sweet and sour sauce from Chinese food... the Vinegar taste over powered everything also was super salty. Next the sizzling hot plate of super salty oily toro. This dish was so bad we send it back because it smelled and tasted so bad. I Took one bite, the salty regular soy sauce taste they used as base was so salty I couldnt take a second bite. We had to send the dish back they remade it for us... still .... Lets move on, Next was Macha Soba, soba was not so special, soy sauce based with a bit of Bitter taste because of the Matcha and raw green onions....and last two was ice cream and shaved ice. Yes, Macha flavored, Looks ok, taste really sweet... just go JP supermarket randomly buy an ice cream will taste better. I really want a refund...the after taste of the soy sizzling Toro was so fishy and bad, I threw up when I got home. And, needed to go shower to get rid of the fishy taste and smell. Nothing about this meal is worth the money. One more thing is The hot tea is hot, good! but, it was too hot for the servers to hold the cup. Therefore, they held the cup at rim, touching the rim of the cup...holding the cup at the rim where we drink from really dont feel Sanitary and professional to me at all. dont understand why they dont use a tray if its that hot... Overall, worsts overly price + overly salted + non Japanese like Food I ever had. If u r looking to eat fresh sashimi and sushi Do Not order the omakase its so far off of the jp Authentic style. AVOID! Be Smart. Read the one star reviews before u go... trap... money wasted and time wasted.

Went to try an omakase. Used good ingredients but overall execution was subpar for the expectations and price point. They catered to my girlfriends dietary restrictions which was nice but the flow of the courses did not mesh well, especially with the two hot dishes being very heavy back to back. The wagyu dish was very disappointing with the poor execution and its extreme heaviness making the whole meal feel imbalanced. The desserts were phenomenal and as I said before the ingredients were great quality. Would recommend a la carte if going to this location

It s good food, and that s why people come here. The setting is acceptable and service is too, though in both regards, Nobu is better. This is especially true of the waitstaff, I ve never had a bad service experience here but also haven t had a good one. Yet I feel the food is better here. I have no reason to feel this way no doubt they use the same suppliers but I usually feel it s slightly better. I like Matsuhisa s signature cod and new style sashimis a lot, those two are what other restaurants don t have.

Omakase experience was extremely disappointing. I found myself waiting 15-20 minutes between dishes because the kitchen was backed up . Different tables are getting seated and ordering omakase at different times so the experience is simply inconsistent and the wait is too long. Sushi is good but I wouldn t want to spend $200 per person again for this kind service. If you are looking for a good omakase experience at this price point, go somewhere else.
