The food here is okay, and I’d give it 4 stars. However, the service was quite disappointing. The staff’s communication felt unfriendly and impolite. For instance, when I asked for wasabi, I was told, “The chef doesn’t approve it,” and when I requested to have my sake bottle placed on my table, I received the same curt response. A little more politeness and thoughtfulness in how they communicate would go a long way. For a meal costing over $300, I expected a better service. Unfortunately, this experience has left me with no desire to return.

Best experience at SUGARFISH.
Currently wishing I didn’t live in Arizona, so that I could easily grab a bite from there now! I was visiting LA for PIlates training and made it a mission to find the best sushi and
this was top of the list. From the person who greeted me at the front, to the amazing staff Gabby and Michael, they made me feel welcomed and not so alone even though I was a party of one. The restaurant manager David, was very kind and made sure to check in once I had my food to ensure all was well. The entire team, atmosphere and food was 10/10! Can’t wait to go back.

I just had the most incredible experience at Sugarfish, all thanks to Miss Margarita!

I accidentally ordered my food to the wrong location without realizing it, and she went above and beyond to make sure I didn’t have to deal with the hassle. Even though the restaurant was busy, she took the initiative to call the other location, reassured me, and arranged for my order to be rushed at the correct spot—saving me a 25-minute drive.

Margarita was so polite, and proactive, making what could have been a stressful situation — a breeze.

I was feeling unwell, and her kindness honestly made my day a million times better.

You don’t get this level of service often in Los Angeles, and I’m so grateful for her. Sugarfish is very lucky to have her!

My happy place on earth. It's intimate and elevated, but still cozy. I love the bay scallop hand roll. So creamy and super fresh. Sets the bar for me in terms of scallop hand rolls. The salmon is always a classic as well. I also tried the unagi nigiri and it was the best I've ever had - melts in your mouth. Have tried the crab and lobster too, but those were just okay to me.

The 'Trust Me' sushi omakase @US$30 was excellent value for money. Overall very good sushi and handrolls. Winner was the warm toro (fatty tuna belly) handroll. Melt in the mouth goodness with a crunch from the crispy seaweed. The umami goodness explodes in your mouth! The tuna sashimi in ponzu sauce was a close second.

Unfiltered sake Nigori @US$12 was great value too. If you like sweeter sakes, pick the unfiltered ones.

Service is prompt and attentive.

Review №85

I had the "Trust Me" for lunch and I was blown away by the flavor. I think people who don't like Sugarfish might have an issue with a sort of "fishy' smell associated with fish. The thing is, I noticed it wasn't the fish that smelled fishy, it was the seaweed.

Good authentic seaweed has a bit of that factor, like when you smell a fish oil supplement bottle. For me it added to the flavor in a slight limburger niche strong food kind of way. It wasn't THAT strong at all, but it rose an alert on my senses which resulted in the calm and enjoyment of the great flavors of the sushi. The ponzu had a zest to it. Even the mayo was clearly no ordinary mayo. It was creamier and a little sweet.

The space was only too limited in the atmosphere. I hope they expand it.

I'll be going back for big events with my sushi loving friends and fam.

Oh, and in true authentic Japanese fashion, tipping was not asked for nor given as an option on the receipt. I love that. Tips are a manipulative tactic of business owners who should not own businesses. American restaurants need to pay their staff. I can thank them and advertise them when they are exceptional.

The price for an a-list place like this is superb. I recommend the fixed price menu, but not the most expensive one because I got that while my mom had the standard, and there was barely any difference. The service is world class. The portions are tiny but fulfilling as they come out one by one. The taste is mostly fantastic, a couple items that were disappointing. Vibe is cozy but very very dark. Some annoying ppl sitting next to us ruined the vibes. So, I wanted to love this place but truthfully, it was good...just not great. The sushi was super fresh and of the 7 or 8 things we tried, we really enjoyed 80% of them. The service seemed rushed and spotty (sometimes super attentive, other times...hello, can someone make eye contact and assist?). The atmosphere was buzzy but cold...minimalist Japanese decor...functional but not warm. I'd say go and enjoy it if this type of place is appealing but for me, there are other places I'd return to first.

“We don’t substitute anything for albacore.”

Inside the venue it was so dark that it was almost impossible to see the food you eat. To read the paper menu, I had to use my phone flash. The waiter explained the dim light as being part of the venue's "ambience". OK, good to know.

Despite it was a bit "cookie cutter" to be an "omakase" experience, given the price, I would say it is well worth it, the quality was good.

The place is a bit busy and loud when we were there, but this is more down to the clientele than the restaurant.

Review №196

Pretty good sushi experience and able to get a seat at the bar without waiting on a weekend night. The service is decent, regardless this establishment automatically adds a 16% service fee. The house bottled sake isn’t very good, wouldn’t suggest it. Overall gave that sushi fix - decent fish quality at fair prices.

First time trying SUGARFISH as recommended by a colleague and it was utterly delicious. Don’t expect a traditional purist sushi omakase joint, instead quite the opposite. Sushi and rolls were BIG on flavour and I especially like the seasoned rice and the use of ginger and pickles in the dishes. Fish is also extremely fresh served along nice ice cold beers. Atmosphere of restaurant is very relaxed and service team was great.
