I just came back from here and I must mention the positives first. The service and attention to detail here is amazing. We were treated like royalty, and everyone is super nice.
Unfortunately the food was very bad. I’ve never had a bad avocado toast, until today. There was way too much ricotta cheese on it, I couldn’t even taste the avocado! There was no baked arugula, it was just a mountain on the side… and the toast was simply too thick, it’s supposed to be much thinner.
The grilled chicken in the burger was dry, too.

My bill was over 80$ because they dont allow you to substitute meat for hash in the meals so i had to order everything seperately (so too bad vegetarians). Servers looked annoyed. I always tip...20%at least but the lack of attention and the bare minumum service i didnt this time and dont plan on dropping by anytime soon. Also their "menu" on google maps is probably 5 years or older since their prices are way higher. I dont mind paying cuz of inflation but at least update your info so people arent misinformed. One of the servers with brownish hair was nice and sweet but unfortunately we didnt get her as a server. I got the black hair server. She needs a day off or two. Handed them $100 with bill and they took it and laid it on the table...waited an extra 10 minutes before i figured out you pay up in front of the cafe. Wouldve been nice to be told that. Again, paid $80 for enough food for 3 people. insanity.

My first time and surprised at how large the restaurant is on the inside. I had previously pictured a smaller location based on the tables outside and limited frontage.
We ate outside and the noise level was fine with the limited traffic on the street. Service was prompt and the food portions more than adequate. It was pleasing to hear that anything on the menu is available at all times. Next time looking for breakfast, we will keep this place in mind.

MJ's is located in the downtown area of Brentwood. The place is not that big. They offer breakfast and lunch menu and closes at 3pm. I guess you can call it brunch. I've never eaten here before but the pictures looked great.

My friend ordered the Texas style French toast with bacon and eggs. I ordered Joe’s special. It was an omelette that had ground beef, mushrooms, spinach, and onions I think. My friend loved her French toast and cleaned her plate. Mine was good but it was a little bland for my taste. We also ordered a side of biscuit and gravy. The gravy was good but the biscuit was dry….we ordered extra gravy.

Overall it was ok. The service was great. We didn’t have to wait very long to get seated and the food came fast. Oh I almost forgot they do have dessert and pastry.

The hot coco is the BEST I HAVE EVER TRIED! I would have given 5 stars, but I feel as if the waitress could have been a tad more attentive. I didn't get a single fill on my water. However, the people who brought over the food were super polite! Parking can be tricky if you visit during peak times. The French toast was tasty. Grilled tuna sandwich was actually good too! Everyone was happy with their selections!

Had previously had the eggs benedict here and it was good. Today was awful. The English muffins were barely toasted if even. The eggs were so runny when I asked for medium poached. Asked for crispy bacon. Got several pieces barely cooked. Country potatoes were swimming in a bunch of grease and oil. My friend’s toast was just bread, again unsure if it was even toasted. Best service was the girl who brought drinks. Others couldn’t be bothered. I had to ask her to get our server so I could ask to have the inedible eggs Benedict taken off. Which they did. So that’s something. Disappointed. New cooks? New staff? 🤔

I didn't go here for several years after I had to send what was supposed to be over medium eggs back 3 times just to have the owner tell me not every cook goes by the same standards for cooking eggs. Then why ask how you want them if the cook is just going to cook them how they want. At that point I just asked that they take my plate back and take that meal off the bill. I was recently talked into going again( against my better judgement). And again after ordering over medium eggs AND specifically stating I want my whites solid and yolks runny, they still came with runny, snotty, egg whites. They tried to hide the under cooked eggs with the hashbrowns and when I asked that they be fixed the waitress very rudely said" do you even know what over medium means" yeah just like I asked for. They did fix them but I don't go out to eat to be treated so badly just for asking for what I ordered! There is no way I will ever be talked into going back to this place!

Horrible very rude service, from the beginning the host was very rude, we wanted table for 2 and my husband told them we are celebrating an especial occasion, the host was very rude told us you have only 90 minutes to seat, gave us a horrible broken table, when we complained that the table is broken she said it is what it’s is. There were another table available with a better location but she refused to give it to us. And she refused the acknowledge the problem with table and setting. DON’T come here to celebrate any special occasion!!!!

First of all Katie is great! Not sure why people are saying the food isn't great. It is. Good portions of solid breakfast food. They have an early special until 9:00 am that's unbeatable for around $11.00 and change. The French toast was different and better than I've had before. Great find. I Will be a regular customer.

Silverware 🍽 was dirty on all tables. The orange juice wasn't fresh. The hot coco wasn't fresh. Either overpriced asked for new silverware from the server, and she grabbed it from the opposite table next to mine, not fresh from the kitchen, and will never return again.

We went there for the first-time last week. Had a co-worker recommend this place just before the pandemic. He brought his family out from the city to pick cherries and they loved both the cherry picking and MJ's for lunch. Don't know why it's taken us so long to try MJ's but we finally did and I see we've been missing out all these years. Great tasty breakfast and we took a Salted Caramel Banana Cake home for dessert the next night. All I can say is WOW!

Great selection of breakfast items and baked goods. The classic Joe and the corned beef hash were both well plated and tasty. Service was attentive and the staff were very friendly. The portions are generous. We got there before the rush and were seated immediately.

MJ's is a Brentwood staple. The Spaniard Omlet and the California Benedict are on point! The chorizo, cheddar cheese, sour cream, onion, bell pepper and salsa....yum! I tried to not eat the hash browns, but they were too perfectly crispy to pass on. My kids were in heaven as they split the Mickey Mouse pancake meal and my English muffin. It comes with two huge pancakes, a big slice of bacon or sausage and an egg. Have to get extra bacon!

Amazingly good coffee, the best I've had in a long time. The menu is a bit pricey, but the portions made up for it. I had 3 eggs, 6-7 pieces of bacon, hash browns and toast. Service was prompt, once you get seated - and there will be a line during breakfast/lunch, especially on Sunday. Bakery items looked fattening, especially the cakes. I would call this the best breakfast in Brentwood.

I'll be honest I'm not a big fan of diners but my family loves them. So Sunday we went to breakfast in Brentwood, me avocado toast & the kids pancakes, toast & hasbrowns. My $13 avocado toast had brown/grey avocados and super small toasts. My son also had hair in his toast. So I would skip and go elsewhere.

We ordered a cake for my Dad's 75th birthday! There was a small misunderstanding on the timing, so the owner came in after hours to complete the cake herself and then hand delivered it to our house. It was my first visit at MJ's Downtown Cafe. It's a quaint spot in downtown Brentwood. The restaurant was full; we may have waited 20 minutes. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I ordered a chicken and mushroom omelet with country potatoes and sourdough toast. It was good; a standard breakfast plate. Upon leaving, I noticed the case of breakfast pastries and cakes. I ordered the cherry cream cheese danish. THAT was spectacular! The danish was sweet and buttery. The cream cheese and cherries were a perfect addition. I enjoyed my experience and will return.

This place is busy on the weekends but once you get in and look over the extensive menu, you'll be glad you came. Plenty of breakfast choices, full French toast is huge.

The food is AMAZING!! the service is EXCELLENT!!! all of the staff is VERY FRIENDLY! and they have the BEST bakery in town! Things have changed unfortunately. We used to love this place for breakfast. Lately the food has been greasy and not the same quality it was before. The servers seem stressed and not as attentive. Hopefully things will improve soon.

I was excited to try this place because I read so many good reviews but I honestly did not love it 🙈 we went for breakfast and the place was packed, waited about 40 mins to be seated, they served our food super fast which was great but the food itself was ok, just a regular breakfast and the hash browns were bland. The service could improve, I had to keep calling the server for basic things like napkins, ketchup, and when he served my coffee he spilled some on the table and didn't clean it. Overall, I thought it would be better but it's an ok place.

They're busy often, apparently, there's not much space for staff to move around, drinks are somewhat limited, I had the french toast, which was only french toast, and well, that's what it tasted like. Nothing special. It was good, but I wouldn't pay 14 for it again.

Mediocre at best! My wife’s Denver omelette came without cheese. They should never have a table without a salt shaker. I could have cooked my family of four a better meal at home with the same ingredients for around the price of one omelette plate with coffee.

My fiance absolutely loved this breakfast spot. Let her tell it, they make a darn good eggs Benedict. My breakfast wasn't nearly as exciting, nonetheless it was decent with good portions. The service is only as fast as they cook the food. You get it hot and fresh which is all that matters in the morning.
The atmosphere is ok nothing to complain about... Thank you MJ's

Generally a very decent experience at MJs, I’ve never had a problem there, however, Kaylee(blonde girl at the front) pushed us to the side after she couldn’t find our call In order, another girl came out and tried to help so I told her my order assuming they misunderstood my name, which they did no big deal it happens. But then as I’m in line to pay she tells the person behind us we’ve been helped and pushes us to the side again. At this point I ask to pay for my food that is sitting on the counter, she rings me up so I then ask for it, she then tells me the other girl will hand me my food once she brings my oj.. i continued to be nice to her and i hate to think it’s because of the color of my skin, but im Just very disappointed with the customer service today and hope something is done about this, immediately!

I Had a lovely encounter with the owner and got the story about the history of the MJ's... I really enjoyed the food which came out promptly and cooked properly as you see from the pics. Looking forward to returning asap 🤤🤤

First time here and it was fantastic. Best breakfast in the area. Chicken fried steak was great and so were the pancakes. Huge portions so you will definitely leave full. Only downside is it always packed. Expect to wait 30 to 40 minutes.

The food here is always excellent! Their salads are PHENOMENAL! I've never had a bad meal here.
HOWEVER cleanliness can be a bit challenging here. Look under the cold cases-filthy. Walking in the sidewalk and entrance outside are filthy. Come on guys, a $50 power washer would do wonders.
Fixing the creaky chairs and tables would make your customers feel like you really do care about them.
And please, have your servers say hi and be a bit chatty. It's amazing how people will feel like they belong somewhere when you make them feel that way

Have been coming here for years because they have the BEST breakfast food in town. Their only negative is that when you call in to place a to-go order their phone is CONSTANTLY off the hook. Example: I just tried to place an order over the phone and was put on hold for ten minutes. After losing hope I hung and tried to call back but the call “couldn’t be completed as dialed since the party is busy”. It’s been over 30 minutes since they’ve checked their phone.

Went in here. Two people went in before me fine . But the waitress sat the two down. And then ignored me and my child. I stood there while even the diners started looking at me. And the. Road handling the checkouts looked at me multiple times. Not a single welcome in or someone will be with you in a second. Nothing. Not a single word actually. I work in customer service and at the. Very least you can greet a person walking through your doors.

Food pretty good

But what stands out more is the poor customer service. There's nothing special about how you are treated here. No warm welcome. Rushed service. People seem stressed. Not an environment I like to be in.

Horrible service by the waiting staff. The staff couldn’t even explain their outdoor seating policy while we were waiting to be seated. We had a party of 5 which included one child. We just wanted a table out front and stated we could wait longer if needed. The staff seated an older white couple outside that arrived after us with a dog and informed us only one outside table would be serviced. Felt that the service was prejudice. Ownership should train their staff. Won’t be going back. Would give zero if we could. Not POC friendly.

Unfortunately we had a terrible experience this morning. Our family of five asked to be seated outside. The young lady said they were only able to accommodate a party of three outside (even though there was three available tables). We then said we were willing to sit separately to be able to eat outdoors. We have a little one and it’s hard to eat indoors, we want to be mindful of others at restaurants. Then the woman said that wasn’t possible either. The waiter brought out our silverware as he was getting ready to take our order, she then screams at him “we can’t do outside”. I call the restaurant and ask about the outdoor seating, she says our party of five would be able to be seated. It was very frustrating due to the young lady for whatever reason saying we couldn’t be accommodated when clearly we were the only ones outdoors. Please review your outdoor seating policy/situation. Someone who came after us was seated outside where the waitress said wasn’t available. We felt racially profiled at this establishment please take that in mind when taking your business here.

Extremely disrespectful, and entirely racist service. To the manager who leads this restaurant, you need to train your servers and cashiers on addressing the customers (waiting to be seated) instead of just walking by with quick glances. There were 4 available tables. And also train your servers on interpersonal skills because our server decided to talk to someone else in the middle of taking my father’s order.

We ordered hamburgers and the place was very nice. The place offers breakfast, Lunch and dinner all day and we arrived at 12 noon lunch time. I will definitely take another trip to Mj's and tell people about it.

Banana pecan waffles were delicious! They give you huge portions. This restaurant gets really busy! Be there early. I wished they had more staffs. Waited a little bit too long for refills. Other than that, it's an great place for breakfast.

Great food and pastires with a great hometown feel and wonderful hospitality from the staff to the regulars. Reminds me of Dennys earlier years with great menu items for kids to seniors. You wont be dispointed.

I have been going to MJ since moving to Discovery Bay and I must say I had one the most racist experience. I order my food me and my wife. Things was good the waitress gave us our menu ASAP! They gave us and coffee took our order. 35 minutes later no coffee refill, no silverware, asked and was told okay 10 minutes later still nothing. Customer next to us white man came in 15 minutes after us is done eating and asking for his bill. You tell me what that looks like? I paid for the coffee and my wife's lemonade.....and I will never step foot in MJ Cafe just as long as I am a Black man.

So, this is my 2nd time trying this place, and every time I've come this place is always super busy, and the wait has been long! My friends raved about a seafood omelette (Monterey Omelette), that was sooooo good! So, I thought I'd check it out! When we finally got seated, they ran out of crab, so it was a bust my first time coming. Second time I was having a mother/son day with my mom and she wanted to go here again to try to get this omelette. Well, after another longggg wait to be seated, the first thing we ask was did they have CRABBB!!😂 Fortunately, they did. So, to my surprise this omelette was amazing!!! Really good! But would I wait as long as I did everytime to get it.....naw! Plus our country potatoes were hard and under cooked. They messed up my mom's order, she ordered banana pancakes and they gave her regular pancakes. This is a mixed review, this place wasn't trash, but it wasn't great either!! If you're in the mood for a REALLY good seafood omelette, and got time to sit and wait for a table for almost an hour, then definitely come here.
