Fresh, quality ingredients….great flavors! The taco salad is my top pick. And I also love the fresh chips (both plantain and tortilla) as well as the salsa and guacamole. Consistent performance across many visits! Lots of gluten-free options.

The restaurant is cutting costs by splitting the drink cups holders in half, causing drinks to spill during delivery. I can't understand how such an expensive restaurant allows for such unprofessionalism.

Food quality was excellent and VERY tasty.

Portions were lacking for a $25 bowl. I paid $7.50 extra for guacamole and tofu, and the photograph below is how much I got. Quite disappointing.

For the price, the portions are absolutely not worth it.

Oh my gosh! Everything here is amazing! The place is clean, staff are extra friendly, portions are perfect, prices are reasonable.

Now let's talk about the ingredients, I'm super picky and I can eat so many things here! Meat eaters to vegans, they have everything and awesome drinks as well!

My favorite is the three taco special, I make mine vegan.

They have a nice outdoor patio seating area too.

The Toluca Lake area is quaint and safe. This is one of our new favorite places!

We found a healthy eating treasure in Burbank called Tocaya Modern Mexican. It's a clean cafeteria-like atmosphere in which you can order from your table using a QR code or walk up and order from the cashier. My son called it a new age type business where cash is unacceptable. The food is clean, old-world, and fresh with classic flavors. I enjoyed the Baja fish tacos; the hot sauce brought the flavor out. The corn bowl was excellent, too. The strawberry basil drink was refreshing, along with the sangria. The service was perfect. We will be returning.

So this location taught me that Tocaya has a serious consistency problem.

I frequent the west Hollywood location and I guess I've been spoiled by an actual hot plate of food.

This location was extremely dark, AC was on high in the middle of January, and the $32 plate of food I ordered came out stone cold.

I walked to the front and asked them to at least pop it in the microwave for me.

They have no microwave.
Okay, so that gives me a lot of concern, if they are serving me cold food that means they are not bringing it up to safe temperatures in the first place.

I told them to refund me and I went somewhere else.

This location should honestly be shut down. They were empty anyways.

Manager was very flippant about it, all she cared about was making sure she didn't accidentally refund the single $4 taco that I actually ate Lmao.

What a joke.

Also, there are half a dozen other reviews with the same exact issue - cold food.
This place is going to get someone sick.

First time eating here and I'm sorry to report it was the smallest burrito I've ever had. $22 + tip for a burrito and a cider, chips are $3.50 extra. Not much chicken in the burrito and was hungry an hour later. I get it expenses are high in LA, but you order at the counter and they deliver the food, so there's not much of a wait staff. They also didn't provide any napkins or utensils with the food. Won't be back, as there are way better options in the area.

Food is great. Taste and presentation is good. Service is not good. When the server served me the food, i realized, i am going to be thirsty coz i ordered a burrito and taco. Hence i asked the server who wears big black glasses for a glass of water. The waitress pointed me out to the cooler and said its self service. I was sitting outside and the cooler was far away inside. The waitress made several rounds from inside to outside to serve one of the other table with drinks, extra sauce, napkins, cutlery etc. While doing that she could have grabbed me a glass of water but she didn’t. It was not at all hard to do that. Plus the restaurant was not at all busy. This tells me that servers do not have the incentive to help guests and provide a good customer service coz they know the customer has paid upfront and they are not going to be tipped if they do something above and beyond. A simple glass of water. I left the restaurant without grabbing water and drank some which was left in mu car upon leaving. So yes, thats my expereince. A great customer service is the cornerstone for a restaurant to be successful. You can win a customer’s heart and mind with great food but a good customer service will keep bringing them back to your restaurant over and over again. That will be my advice to them. A customer always observes, consciously or unconsciously. We do!

Everyone around me is asking to remake their meals. Our tacos came out cold and we called the manager to report this and all she says is “we have a warmer they might have gotten cold from the kitchen to the table” what kind of answer is this? This manager is just not suitable for the job.

Today 8/25/23

Just tried this place again and they are not getting better. They serve cold tacos and forget to bring the drinks. Honestly I don’t know why they ask for tips ahead of time. I really don’t like the service in this location.

I am writing to bring to your attention a serious issue that my partner and I experienced at your restaurant on May 7, 2023. We placed an online order for two orders of the Tinga Tacos, one order of the Mahi Tacos, one order of chips and guacamole, one order of waffle bites, three aqua frescas, and one Vegan Guiltless Burrito. My partner, who has been a vegan for over a year for health reasons, drove almost 20 minutes to pick up the order. However, upon returning to his grandparents' house and taking a bite of the burrito, he discovered that it contained chicken.

As you can imagine, this was extremely concerning for us. My partner's dietary restrictions are due to a medical emergency he experienced, and consuming chicken could have had serious health consequences for him. I immediately contacted Tocaya at 12:30 PM and asked to speak with a Manager on duty. The person who answered the phone identified herself as Anita and said that she was a morning supervisor. When I explained the situation to her, she was dismissive and unhelpful. She claimed that the order did not reference anything about it not having chicken on it, despite my partner noting “No Protein” in the online order. She also spoke to me in a snarky and rude tone and hung up before I could even ask for her name.

When I called back a few minutes later, Anita was hesitant to provide me with her name but eventually did so. I was shocked and disappointed by the lack of care, consideration, and empathy shown by Anita and the overall poor level of customer experience and service we received.

As someone who has worked in a management-level position in Corporate America, I know that this level of behavior is unacceptable. A customer service experience is a fundamental aspect of any successful business, and I feel that the negative experience we had is indicative of a larger problem within your organization.

I appreciate that mistakes can happen, but I cannot and will not tolerate mistreatment by an employee. Anita's dismissive and unprofessional behavior has left an extremely negative impression of your organization. I understand that you may be located in Los Angeles County, but making assumptions, generalizations, and accusing someone of possibly lying is a new low level on the totem pole of the customer experience and customer service.

In a day and age where social media and reputation management play a significant role in the perception of a business, it is important to take responsibility for the actions, and lack thereof, of your employees. I hope that your organization will take immediate action to rectify this situation and ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future, especially for the health and safety of other customers/patrons.

Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

The food’s great and feels like something you’d get when you’re on vacation at a remote island luxury restaurant but with reasonable prices.
Best part is you get best of both world, Vegan food and meat eaters food plus the place is clean and refreshingly different.
They also do catering so you can order for the office or for an event.
Overall a wonderful place to take you special someone, family and friends.

August 2022 - Overall, the food was fine but service could be better.

Food/Pricing - Ceviche Side, $8.95 - Decent to order if you're not too hungry.

Passion fruit Margarita, $7.95.

Strawberry Margarita, $7.95.

Both drinks were refreshing!

Service/Ambiance - Unfriendly environment. We ordered one dish. After 20+ minutes with no update from the staff, I went up to inquire but mid-sentence the employee cut me off with a curt "it's coming out". Call me sensitive but it felt pretty rude. There were probably 3 other parties inside so they weren't super busy.

Parking - Street parking. There's also a parking lot in the back.

Bad food and bad management. The manager Chelsey was rude for no reason. Details: Used to love this place but it’s gone downhill. Today I got two tacos and a side of corn. First, the food was completely cold. Second, the corn was tough and bland with weird hard parts to some of them. I tried to switch the corn (I was going to tough it out with the tacos) and the manager refused. Arguing that the Half side of guacamole was a lot more. Also this is not the first time the food has been cold and bland but definitely worse than the last few times plus, yes, the servings are tiny. Don’t waste your money. It’s so expensive for mediocre food and the customer service.

I had enough and asked for a full refund but don’t go there until they get their act together. You’re better of at Taco Bell.

Some tips for Tocaya: First, if you mess up, you try to make it better. Secondly, I paid the full price (17.45) for the two tacos and side combo with a drink. It was happy hour so the prices would have been cheaper if I bought separately. In other words you were already making a lot more money so no reason to be stubborn about 50 cents. Third, you Didn’t even offer me the ability to pay the difference!

3 words. SERVICE SERVICE SERVICE.

Mexican restaurant throughout USA and of course México are distinguished for their attentiveness and service.

This place does not have that.

The two cashiers behind the desk were finalizing a large catering order for some production that was being carried out by two ladies.

Since our arrival to the restaurant me and my client were never acknowledged, greeted, looked in the eye or even told that it would be just a moment.

We stood there in the checkstand for 8 minutes. I had to ask the busboy and the bus girl if I had to sit for my order to be taken. Their reply was that it was there at the checkstand and that it was the two people arranging the catering order which was already taken out by the two ladies. They only has one bag with some plates missing.

Even after they heard me ask they didn't approach us or acknowledge us.

Until we walked out the door I could hear the man yell "I'm ready for you" I replied. "THANK YOU"

I wanted to GIVE this spot a "chance" but seems too much is Invested in the image and looks but nothing on training and service.

I left and now I'm sitting happy with a mimosa in my hand at Aeirloom just down the street. My usual spot.

Mas vale el diablo por conocido que por conocer.

Pónganse las pilas y denle respeto a sus clientes.

We asked the server if we could order more drinks & she stated that we had to walk up to the counter & order our drinks again! We ordered drinks & waited 20+ mins in a empty restaurant AFTER we had to walk up there and pay for our drinks unlike the Caucasian couple! Their drinks are EMPTY while our table is EMPTY! After waiting over 20+ mins for our drinks, two were made incorrectly. When they made the correct drinks, they gave the ones made incorrectly to two females on the patio for free. Instead of giving them to us complimentary for the mess up! HIGHLY UNPLEASED!

my wife loves this place but its hard to get any consistency with our order. we came here saturday night to pick up her usual tomatillo shrimp tacos. every time she has ordered it from what we can tell the shrimp has had tomatillo sauce on it. this time when we picked it up there was no sauce and from the taste of it it was just plain shrimp. my wife came back inside and proceeded to clarify since she paid EXTRA for it but was told it doesn't come with "sauce" and that its just marinated in it. whatever the case it had zero hint of tomatillo on the shrimp.

my issue isn't the order being "wrong", my issue is with the staff continuing to argue with my wife and trying to make her feel dumb instead of just maybe simply packing up a container of tomatillo sauce to rectify the situation. quick fix and she would have been out the door. instead, the cashier went over to the cook in plain sight and continued to go back and forth about my wife's inquiry (which she could completely hear btw) while another employee stared my wife up and down as if she was out of her mind trying to get what she paid for.

she has ordered this several times so either the previous staff was just making it wrong or the current staff messed up. i keep asking her to quit going to this place, hopefully she listens this time.

the food is generally good; the problem is, every single time I order from this location, my order is wrong - literally dozens of orders over the last several months. I expect it to be wrong at this point, and it always is. I’ve complained just one other time to the manager, because I order through postmates, and it’s just a nightmare that it’s wrong every time. I was offered a $30 gift card from Georgia, I never picked it up because I don’t like complaining, and again I typically order delivery so I don’t like going there if I can avoid it. but this is soooo annoying that my whole order is utterly wrong 100% of the time. My apologies to the kitchen staff but why, and why does the expo send my order wrong every time… (I have photos, - the ticket was sent correctly, and all the instructions were just ignored and sent anyway). And the quesadilla is barely cooked (there was fully unmelted cheese inside).
Edit: 2 weeks after original post and they yet again messed up my soup order…. Added pictures. Every time they get it wrong, I don’t understand.
Edit: I changed my rating from 2 stars to 1 star, because I felt bad for the hourly employees who are simply not paid enough, but I have no sympathy for the corporate response which is transparently pathetic (and predictable). The rot begins at the root, the people in charge here have their heads up their plastic a**es. You’re paid too much; do better, you incapable morons.

I ordered the "family size" adobo tofu dish, and what I got was enough for only a family of mice. They literally chopped a small block of tofu that costs $1.25 at any grocery store and put some gross marinade on it and sold it for $23.95. When I called and raised the issue, they said I got what I ordered and "family size" means what I got (which would not be enough for even one skinny child). They then offered me 15% discount on their ridiculously overpriced food. Stay away unless you want to be ripped off and not even feel good about the taste of the food.

I’m sad to give only 3 stars for this place, because the food is actually really, really good. A bit overpriced, but I’m always happy with the food. The service, however, is atrocious. I was just “served” by the most rude, apathetic woman. I really hope the management reads this review and says something to this horrible employee. She is a very skinny, young white woman with curly hair and glasses. She delivered my food to the table via their online ordering system. When i asked if i could get a water and a fork, she literally rolled her eyes and walked off without acknowledging that I’d even spoken. She returned to the bar and began talking to her coworkers, and sampling their wine. When i approached the counter to ask if she’d heard my request she answered sharply that she was getting my water and fork now.

I realize that serving food, especially at the tail end of a pandemic, is not the most gratifying profession, but come on. Maintaining the most basic human civility like acknowledging when someone talks to you, the server, is literally the minimum effort and the least that you, the server, could provide.

As I said, the food is always good and I’m sure I’ll be back/order deliver from a Tocaya again, but hopefully won’t have to deal with this breath of putrid air again. Seriously girl, your parents are probably ashamed of you. Do better.

Total fail. Ordered online and told to arrive at 7:29. 30 min later still not ready. At least 20 others waiting for orders too. Maybe stop accepting orders? Expediter asking hungry people to be patient. . . “We’re doing our best.” What a mess.

The food tasted fine and the service was friendly, but for what it was, the food was a rip off in my opinion. I ordered an asada burrito and they really SKIMPED on the carne asada. Honestly never seen anything like it. Maybe 4 or 5 bites had any meat in them? 97% white rice and black beans for over $10? Like I said, it wasn't bad, but I gotta say it was certainly disappointing. If you are looking for Mexican food in LA, the market is saturated. There are literally hundreds of places I'd recommend over this.

Edited review:

So I come to the Toluca lake location quite a bit because it’s convenient, but recently I was working over by the Hollywood location and started eating there occasionally. The Hollywood location has much, much, much better food. I always thought tocaya sacrificed flavor so that it could be “healthy”, but I’m starting to think the Toluca lake location is just subpar compared to the other ones. It’s like they try to conserve seasoning or something at the Toluca lake location. The sautéed onions at T.L. are always raw, and the ground beef is just flavorless.

However, at Hollywood and in West Hollywood (on sunset blvd), everything tastes soooo much better. I think the one in Toluca lake needs a refresher course in how to make the food.

This is one of the worst experience I had picking up an order. Did an online order scheduled to pick up at 12:30pm. Asked a few times if my order is ready and the girl handling the pick ups told me I have to wait (rudely). After 30 minutes of waiting from the pick up time she noticed my frustration and finally took the time and looked up my order to notice that the website did not transact, even though I had my confirmation. Without any apologies of thier glitch, the girl told me I have to wait another 40 minutes for my order. This place needs proper management for sure and the girl should never work In customer service.

My wife stumbled upon this place today. She was looking for some healthy for me. I have been trying to eat healthier.

I had the Shredded Kale & Quinoa Salad
shredded kale, quinoa salad, crispy baked chickpeas, lime pepita seeds, white beans, pico de gallo, sliced avocado & red wine vinaigrette. chef recommends: adobo tofu + vegan chipotle jack.

My wife opted for the Cali
avocado-onion salsa. chef recommends: chicken tinga + queso fresco
Barrio
roasted tomato salsa, avocado, diced red onion & cilantro. chef recommends: beef chorizo + jalapeño jack

Both with Carne asada, served with beans and cilantro rice.

I truly enjoyed my food and I am looking forward to ordering from them again.
