Greatest place to stop in Caliente

This is a fantastic little historic gem in the foothills about 45 minutes east of Bakersfield (off of the Hwy 58) and about 45 min south of Lake Isabella on Caliente Creek Rd… excellent food, wonderful servers in a modernized yet still time period accurate 100 year old school house. I especially appreciate that the original chalk boards are still there and they even supply chalk for the kiddos to use! Complete with an indoor bar, two big screen tv’s (with the volume set at a comfortable level) an outdoor patio and the finishing touch is the multiple horseshoe pits with shoes supplied by the house! Top that all off with a beautiful scenic drive along the Caliente Creek complete with a seasonal waterfall about halfway up to the Schoolhouse. Easily one of my most favorite places around!

One of the worst meals that we've EVER had in our lives. I had the fish & chips, and my daughter had the veggie burger. They were HORRIBLE!!! The fish was covered in a gummy batter, the fries were cold and hard. The tarter sauce came in a little packet, and it was awful. The veggie burger was hard and flavorless. The coffee sucked!

We drove all the way up to Twin Oaks because we read on Facebook that the French fries are hand cut. It's not worth going thete, no matter the distance. Simply put, an extremely disappointing dining experience.

The service was okay. The table was sticky and filthy. Never again!

This is a historic restaurant! It used to be an old-school house from the late 1800s and has been refurbished as a restaurant! Excellent food choices and great beer selection! I love the historic site any cozy atmosphere, and sometimes has live music and plenty of outdoor seating.

It's not Tog's. It's the Schoolhouse Café. And it was excellent. Good food. Great service. I think we overwhelmed the chef a bit with 14 people showing up at once. But he didn't sacrifice quality for speed.

I agree with Michael Hebert's review on the blonde woman working the counter. I stopped there to get a drink and some ice cream and she was very short, curt and just plain rude. The place itself is cute and I would have loved to come back with my family to have lunch or dinner, but based on her treatment I would not return. The man working the bar was kind and flashed a huge smile....but she definitely needs to be kinder to patrons.

We absolutely LOVE the Schoolhouse Grill. I really enjoy the tri-tip, hamburgers, and hand cut fries; to tell the truth everything is good! Quality ingredients, and you can't go wrong with their homemade ice cream! We'll be visiting every time we are in town.

This blonde lady is rude and the food was 2 stars at best. Stale buns/bread and when you asked for a glass of milk I was surprised it was poured just over half. Not a full glass like soda & water. We came here for wildfire mitigation work to protect the local community. We were inspecting some areas in Caliente near the restaurant when someone threatened to shoot our work crew. We went to the School House grill to eat and ask to use their WiFi to notify our company and police so that no one else goes into that area. The owner lady(blonde hair)of the restaurant told us she doesn’t give out the WiFi code. (Nearest cell phone reception is 40 mins away) we later speak to other customers outside who let us use their phones and that they had the WiFi code from her. I guess the owner doesn’t like people from out of town similar to the guy that threatened to shoot us. Very poor hospitality, food and service.
We did find a great place (Kerri’s Korner) afterwards down the road that OFFERED their WiFi without us even asking and they had great food, great service and VERY hospitable.

So glad it's open again. They did a great job of remodeling. But it does seem like more of a yuppie place now. The old people that ran it as TOGS had a lot of character. The new people are really friendly and welcoming. The food was great. I will be back many times.

I had a very good meal tonight. I was disappointed I didn't get any swordfish. But I have to be honest, the Sirloin burger is as good as any steak house steak. There is no need for the bun. According to my Lovely wife's smiles, I'd say she enjoyed herself and her meal as well. Well worth the money!

To clarify, this review is for the Schoolhouse Grill and not TOGS.

I have given Schoolhouse dozens of chances and I am consistently disappointed. The food is overpriced and inconsistent and there really isn't anything that I would recommend. I wish I could say that I like it because aside from Kerris Korner it's all that this community has... but I just want to be honest.

I was there many years ago, maybe a few times, but at least once for sure, sometime since the year 1989. I did go inside, however, when I was there, I cannot remember for certain, but it does seem like at that time, there might have been vehicle fuel available then, much like full fuel service station.
Back then I travelled as an explorer on a Yamaha scooter, an XC200 Riva, Bordeaux Red, about the same fresh red color as the building itself.
I have never been to any specific private address residences therein the community, but I remember enjoying the calm, clean, slow drive as it was.
Today was the first time I had a look at the photos of the exterior appearance of the building. The very moment I saw it, I immediately thought maybe it was indeed a schoolhouse for sure, and within minutes I did notice that at one time, it was for certain.
As I looked across the road in the photo, I saw an old rickety, wooden staircase. I had only guess work here about what might have been there at one time. My guess, numero uno, consisted of a drive-alongside and load from bins, silos, bulk livestock feed business.
If it was indeed there at one time, it was likely equine [horse] based.
I like this building, enough so that maybe there could be yet another, built to modernization to serve the community.

No way to navigate this store without crawling on your hands and knees.

There is so much history in this little town. Stop by and take some time to discover some of it. Love the fact that this general store/cafe/post office/scool house has had so much history to it, it's great to go in and hear a little more each time.
The food has been great every time i have gone in. So far i have yet to have a disapointing experience. Which i hope i never will. Give it a try yourself and lets hear about your experience.
