Ill keep it short. I want to like Document, but a product is never any better than the person from whom you receive it. I say that to say, every time Ive been to Document (and Ive stopped going for this reason), there is one barista in particular--taller Asian male--who is always so unpleasant. Playing the race card is my last resort, always, but I dont think he is too fond of Black customers. Or, to put it differently, the interactions he has with other Asian customers and white ones are markedly differenty. The last time I visited (11/6/24), I ordered two different lattes. My name was called, and when I approached the counter, I asked which was which. He said, Can you hold on? and then processsed to say, without any eye contact and with the most acerbic tone, You can read the cup to see which is which. I let it slide because I had already paid, but I was *hot*. Had he written the names of the lattes on the cup or not, he couldnt have taken two seconds to show me which was which? Im sure had I said something then, he wouldve denied my experience and tried to clean it up, so thats why Im leaving this review here. Like I said, if you are Asian or white, you might be fine. The lattes are fine. They could be warmer, though. As well as the customer service.

It was truly as delicious as rumored! Originally, there wasnt a table to sit at, but there was one :) Also, the parking lot is large so its easy to pick up, so I think Ill come here often.

I recently visited Document Coffee Bar with high expectations, given the numerous stellar reviews, but was left thoroughly disappointed. The affogato, which is typically a delightful combination of espresso and ice cream, was a letdown: the espresso was weak and flavorless, and there wasn t enough of it to complement the amount of ice cream. The ice cream itself was dull, icy, and lacked the smooth, creamy texture that you want with an affogato. The service was also a disappointment. The staff was impersonal and seemed annoyed to be taking my order, which made for an unpleasant experience. The physical space has a lot of potential, as its fairly large, but theres not enough seating inside to make it a hangout spot. While the concept of displaying photos on the wall is interesting, the images are rather melancholy, depicting people seemingly worn down by LA. This choice creates a somber vibe that doesnt feel inviting. There is a small wooden patio in the back, but it overlooks the parking lot, so the view is nothing special. I might give this place another chance since it s just a couple minute s walk from where I live, but my expectations are low.

Blink once and you might miss this place. Its on the corner of an office building on a residential street. But dont miss out on this if youre looking for a serious coffee shop in Ktown, and not one of those coffee places that has drinks that are more instagrammable than drinkable. Dont get me wrong, i enjoy them once in a while, but if youre a coffee afficionado, this is the place. Their latte is good, a bit on the hotter side but that the foam stayed thick and creamy. The cortado though was more of a macchiato, still good. Bummer they dont have coffee cups for inside, just to go cups. Loved the minimalist interior accented by the gallery wall of people. It almost feels like an art gallery with a coffee shop instead of the other way round.

I recently visited this coffee shop with high hopes of finding a comfortable space to work on my laptop or simply enjoy a relaxing atmosphere. Unfortunately, my experience left much to be desired. The ambiance was far from inviting, and I couldnt help but feel uncomfortable throughout my visit. First and foremost, the condition of the coffee shop was disappointing. The walls appeared dirty and neglected, which did not create a pleasant environment. It was clear that maintenance was lacking. Even the bar area was so cramped that it was a struggle to find a suitable spot for my laptop. It seemed like the layout was an afterthought, with barely enough room to place an order or settle in comfortably. The most disheartening aspect was the wall of portraits. Rather than uplifting or inspiring, these pictures created a sense of melancholy. It was as if the coffee shop was intentionally trying to discourage any creativity or productivity. Instead of motivating patrons, it left me with a sense of unease. In summary, this coffee shop is, without a doubt, the most uncomfortable one Ive ever been to. Its a missed opportunity for a business in a town full of young people searching for a welcoming place to work and relax. With a little attention to cleanliness, space planning, and a more inspiring decor, it could attract a much larger and loyal customer base.

While this cafe may seem out of the way around the mid Wilshire area, it s actually quite perfectly placed in the bustling neighborhood. It seems fitted mostly for grab and go now with very minimal seating and just a few spots with counter space. It s a shotgun style space; long and narrow with a neat patio area that juts out into the parking lot (which I had no clue of until I walked back there after parking on the metered street). The coffee selection is robust as the coffee itself. Plenty of options for both espresso and tea. They also carry a good amount of pantry items. Though they were a bit too random for a usual coffee stop for me. I tried their signature Mad Spice latte which was filled with a variety of spices that really made the latte bloom so I was quite surprised and happy that after the initial harsh first sip, the rest went down smooth. There is a pastry bin but it seems to typically run out after the morning and lunch rush. So I didn t get to try anything (and I m not a big scones fan which were the two items left). And that s Document in a nutshell. A quick go to spot to get your Java and a pastry and be on your way. From photos of the past it seems like they used to have more tables and seating but now it s just bare. I personally like a cafe I can get comfortable in and relax for a while. This just isn t one of them. Not their fault, they re catering to the workers all along Wilshire by providing what they need most, good quality coffee.

Review №50

Minimalist spot with limited indoor seating that serves the function of making the coffee shop seem more like a gallery experience than a workspace (which is cool). More importantly, the coffee is incredibly rich and delicious. My iced flat white was balanced, (heads up, $0.75 for oat milk, $0.25 for ice) and was refreshingly light and not overly roasted / bitter. Outdoor (covered) small deck outside if you wanna hang. Otherwise a great spot for grab n go high quality coffee!

I found this coffee shop/bakery near my hotel in Koreatown. When I walked inside, there were already a few people in line. There was a small tray of baked goods and from what I could tell these were likely coming from somewhere in town. My assumption is that they didn t make these in house because of the large boxes they searched through to see if they had a croissant I wanted. Behind the register, they had a small section of chocolates and merch that you could buy. In the back of the shop at the seating area, they had a large wall of portraits. There weren t many seats available so I was fortunate enough to grab one. I ended up ordering the Document Affogato, Document Cappuccino, and Sage Cheddar Sea Salt Croissant. It was my first time getting an Affogato and it was a pretty good experience. The espresso was very strong and slightly bitter (probably because of the chicory base), which went really well with the ice cream on top. My friend had the cappuccino and they said it wasn t anything special. The croissant was incredibly flaky and thick. I did get the floral earthy undertones from the sage, and tasted the saltiness from the sea salt. I enjoyed my brief time here, and recommend you check them out as it s fairly priced and has a nice ambiance!

Document Coffee Bar is one of the coffee shops in LA I visited and liked a few years ago. A lot has changed since then, but it still makes excellent coffee with great attention to detail. Whether I get a cortado or a hojicha latte, its always delicious with nice presentation. Sometimes though I hope the baristas are a little warmer, especially when the shop is to-go only. While Documents long communal dinning/working tables were removed during the pandemic, it continues to serve as an art gallery and showcases local artists even during the pandemic. Their recent exhibit is a series of portraits of its regulars, holding one piece of item they cherish during the pandemic. I am a big fan of this exhibit and always see it again every time I visit the shop.

I just hate that they use the horribly generic Stumptown coffee. Not the worst coffee bean but never anything good or great. A great coffee for people that are on the fence about specialty coffee and want a more conservative taste (e.g. caramel, chocolate). Again not great but the baristas often make the best of it. Like their lidless cortado portions. They do well despite the commodity level coffee. If you super casual about coffee, recommend this place. They make a good cup despite the bean.

Everyone there always seems to be focused & working hard, & above all kind. Rn theyre doing takeout only with some seating in the back. Restrooms are always clean. & theres a current photography display on their walls thats a bunch of beautiful black & white portraits of their regulars. I cant say enough great things. Its one of my favorite ktown gems.

My favorite local coffee shop. Not only do they make excellent coffee, but they have a great selection of artisinal treats and great photography on the walls. Great experience both before, during, and after quarantine. I hope they stay open for a really long time!

The first cafe I visited in LA. And, luckily for me, one of the best Dog friendly!

This is a really good multiroaster. They had some coffees that I ve not seen anywhere else in LA. Pourovers are excellent and the folks working there are nice.

Simple, elegant. Its at once a neighborhood spot to pick up an espresso, an art gallery and an elegant café one might find as you wander through Paris or Seoul or Tokyo.

Usually I drink unsweetened basic coffee like americano, latte and cold brew. But I love their Document cold brew and Document latte which is include maple syrup.

Great staff. Great coffee. On the pricey side. Only visited during pandemic times though, so I understand price increases/limited availability of food. A must visit if you are looking for coffee in K-town.

Flat white was AMAZING! And the ambiance is really welcoming; loved the art wall. Baristas are friendly but not overly chatty or in your face - great service.
