You should come to Houstons when you want way above average food, classy steakhouse ambience & good service for just above average price. It may not have cachet of that other steakhouse down the street. But Id arguably say the steak is just as good and the service more consistent. Food: Wife and I ordered a wood fired ribeye, cooked medium, as our shared main course. It came with French fries. We supplemented it with beans & rice, braised red cabbage. For the steak, its fatty, tender & perfectly cooked with that woody, smoky perfume. Yeah, itd be hard to not order this again when I come back. The beans & rice are the best black beans & rice Ive ever had. I could eat it twice a day for a week straight and not get taste fatigued. Yeah, its that good. I was skeptical about the braised cabbage. It was wifes choice. But I was pleasantly surprised with how tasty it was. Only the fries didnt meet the high standards set with other items. It was a bit soggy and undercooked. I would ask for a substitution the next time I get a steak here. Service: Caleb, our server, was attentive. He stopped numerous time to check on how we were doing and saw to our needs. When he was busy with other tables, other serves came in and made sure we were well attended to. The transition was smoothly and seamlessly done on an exceptionally busy Tuesday. (The parking lot was full before noon.) It seems basic and sounds easy. I cant tell you how many tier one restaurants have dropped the ball on something like this. Also, Caleb carried himself with the kind of easy grace and gravitas. I could easily see him perform Shakespeare in front of a large audience and win them over. All in all, very happy with the service. Atmosphere: The restaurant carries that classy, dark, corporate-ish steakhouse vibe. The restaurant website states theres a dress code. However, I saw a few lunchers in t-shirts, shorts and flip-flops. I am sorry to say that they do detract from the classy ambience a smidge.

With a reservation took 10 minutes to be seated. Table had no straws in cup for straws. Had to ask for water to be refilled. Had asked for lemons for water. Got a plate with three. After using one a waiter took the other two before having a chance to use others on water refill. All without asking if we were done with them. Asked for steak to be medium-well. Steak was more pink than expected. Ribs were awesome. Baked potato was awesome. Coleslaw was delicious. French fries were ok. Brownie with ice cream was ok. Apple stredul was delicious.

A lot of drama Waited for a table, there was one in the bar that was unoccupied when we arrived. They had us wait 25 minutes and then ended up sitting us at that same table. The server took our order with a bake potato everything on the side, but when it was served, everything was on the potato. When we complained, we were told they would not do that per their policy. That makes no sense and really made the experience upsetting.

After over a decade of consistent quality food Houston s decided to cut costs by changing some of their staple recipes. The Cesar salad has canned corn and their mashed potatoes is blended with chunks of cabbage. The cabbage diet taste complimentary at all with potato s. I ordered the ribeye and it was never marinated before but it came out too similar to the Hawaiian steak. I called the restaurant to voice my concerns and the GM expressed they aren t changing the new change anytime soon but welcomed my feedback. Bye for now Houston s

Been coming here for 20 years to celebrate graduations, birthdays, the purchase of our home, etc. Last Thursday I took both my daughters for their birthdays. I told 2 servers it would be nice if they could bring out a little something for their celebration. They said sure, what would you like ? We picked the key lime pie. I was charged $14 for the tiny slice of pie with two candles. My filet was undercooked twice; it kept coming back bloody, no crust and lacking flavor. The ribs were grey with very little sauce and the French Dip was flavorless. We waited and waited for our wine. Had to ask multiple times for the wine. This was a 4pm reservation. It wasn t crazy busy. $247 later (before tip) it was an embarrassing disappointment. Not sure what s going on at Houston s Pasadena, but we re moving on.

I decided to take my dad here for a nice lunch on the 4th of July. Its been a stressful time for us and I wanted to get us a nice, encouraging little escape for the holiday, and I trusted Hillstone Restaurant Group in particular in this regard because one of their restaurants in NorCal (Los Altos Grill) is one of the best and classiest restaurants Ive ever been to, and that restaurant is locally known for their kind staff and positive atmosphere. I trusted that the same would be true of Houstons. We arrived at 11:30 AM and the restaurant was less than half full (perhaps because of the holiday), and the front desk folks and the wait staff were very friendly. The restaurant is also very spacious, nicely decorated, and with a good-sized parking lot out front. The food itself was ok; my dads ribeye steak was very rare even though he asked for medium rare, and the barbecue ribs I ordered were a bit disappointing, as the ones at Los Altos Grill are much meatier. All that is forgivable, but overall I dont believe it was worth the money. The food also took about 40 minutes to arrive even though the restaurant was not busy, but hey, we can forgive that, too. Unfortunately, the positive and encouraging experience I was seeking did not come to pass, and two days later Im still saddened by it. As I mentioned, its been a stressful time and my dad and I decided to give my sister a quick phone call, just to say happy 4th and to wish her well before her cancer surgery. Please note that we are not inconsiderate or obnoxious people; the call was less than one minute total (just quick well-wishes), we put the phone setting so silent I could barely even hear it amidst the buzz of the restaurant, there was no one seated at any table immediately around us, and we were not speaking any bit louder than we would be if we were just conversing with each other at the table. Not 30 seconds into the call, and in the middle of us wishing my sister well, a man (who appeared to be the head chef on this shift and who happened to walk by and saw the phone) came up to the table, kneeled down near the phone on the table, interrupted us mid-sentence, and so rudely and dismissively told us to take our call outside. The way he went about it was just so rude, disrespectful, and over the top, and his attitude was so unwarranted. My sister heard it too and it just added such a damper over what was already a sensitive time for us, when we literally came here to have a positive and encouraging escape from it all. It was all just so unnecessary. And for this to come from the head chef/guy in charge sends a message about how the whole establishment is willing to treat its customers. If the restaurant responds to this, theyll probably say something like, were sorry but it is our policy not to have any phone calls in the restaurant in order to maintain an intimate environment and ensure the comfort of our guests, or something like that. To that Id say: (1) you could at least be nice about it, and not act so rudely and without basic respect for your customers who thus far had been treating all the wait staff, etc with nothing but kindness and respect; (2) such a vitriolic response, if ever used, should at least be reserved for people who are obnoxiously blaring their speakerphone on high volume for all to hear, not to a dad and his son quietly wishing their family member well for a less than a minute on low volume; and (3) if this really is the policy, and if its enforced to such an extreme degree (where it feels like youre in some authoritarian police state), then the policy should be posted or communicated with equal vigor beforehand. The chefs rudeness and unwarranted disrespect was just so out of line and uncalled for. We will not be coming back. By the way, later on and I looked over, and - guess who was standing by the front counter talking on his cell phone?

Review №107

Houstons is hands down my familys favorite restaurant in Pasadena and has been for decades. The meats are nearly always perfectly cooked to order and if they are not (a rare occurrence) they will whisk it away and grill up another order without any side eye or judgment (something which definitely cannot be said for the other high end steakhouses in Pasadena). The steak has flavor from the grill that requires no sauces or butter or toppings--just delicious the way its made. And, the ice cream sundae has a simply scrumptious hot fudge sauce. Despite the above and its status as our fav steakhouse, its not all rainbows and unicorns. The prices have significantly increased of late and the portion size of some of the items such as the fries have experienced a notable reduction. Pre-COVID the fries used to come out on a plate and you could share them. Now they come out in a paper cone which effectively hides just how pathetically small a portion you are getting. Come on Houstons! Youre charging a good price for these fries. Dont be so stingy. It stains the otherwise perfect dining experience. Ending on a positive note the service is always impeccable. As a bourbon enthusiast, I love my Manhattans. Despite the Manhattan being only OK (as I said, Im an enthusiast and few restaurants can wow me with their bourbon-based drinks), one of the service touches that I absolutely adore about Houstons is that if Im drinking it slowly (always a good idea with a bourbon-based drink) the server will bring by a chilled glass and transfer the remaining liquid into the chilled glass. Its details such as this combined with the quality of the food that allows my family to overlook the ever increasing cost of eating here. Fates willing, well be back,...again,...and again,...and again with every birthday or special event.

My recent experience here at Houstons was nothing short of a nightmare. Not only was the customer service shockingly poor from the host to the Manager Bow but the food quality was also terrible. Imagine my disgust when I found a hair in my food - a repulsive addition that left me feeling nauseated and utterly disappointed. When I brought this issue to the attention of the manager, instead of addressing the situation with urgency and professionalism, they brushed it off with indifference. Its appalling that a restaurant would have such disregard for basic hygiene standards and customer satisfaction. I strongly advise against dining here unless you have a strong stomach and a tolerance for appalling service. Do not waste your time or money on this place. There are so many other great restaurants in the area to go to. Also, as a tip. They do not seat a party bigger then 2. They have a very strict dress code, no phone allowed. You have to take your call outside of the restaurant. Lastly not family friendly.

Ate at the bar, and Linda was incredibly helpful and friendly and produced some wonderful cocktails while doing so . I had the crispy chicken sandwich, which was juicy, crispy, and very delicious! Food

I arrived at the store after 11:30, prepared to wait, and there was a 40 minute wait, so I killed time at a nearby supermarket. The steak meat was tender and delicious, and while I was waiting, I ordered the antichokes that were grilled on the grill after seeing the reviews saying they were delicious, and they were really delicious. Recommended. The store had a nice atmosphere, the front desk staff remembered my name after just one visit, and the floor staff were very kind. Its amazing that you can enjoy such great customer service and food at this price.

You wouldnt think that this chain restaurant would be special or unique, but its a true gem. The atmosphere is dark and classy, the food is top-notch, and they have a lovely bar. Its standard American fare (plus sushi), but its done really well. The grilled artichoke and chicken sandwich are standouts. But the service is what makes this place so stellar. They are responsive and accommodating to the level of a Michelin star restaurant. Attentive without being suffocating. The prices arent outrageous and theres ample parking (no valet). Its best to plan ahead as reservations fill up quickly.

So popular that after making a reservation over a month ago and confirming twice that I d be there, I waited 15 minutes for my table; I guess I m lucky I only waited that long. Service was almost too good, kind of felt rushed to eat and run. I just want to eat a little something and relax with a drink or three.

Whenever I am in LA I visit Houston s as they cook the meats over the fire and that smoke flavor is great! Their Prime fillet is wonderful! They were a bit behind in seating us so we were offered drinks on the House. Very classy!!! Their appetizers are great as usual. Their grilled artichokes are delicious and the jalapeño goat cheese was great! I would prefer it warm but that would make it labor intensive so it is served cold.

I cannot cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. First time here, recommended by others. It is pricey as it is a steakhouse. We had reservations and got there a little early and they were able to seat us. Every single person we came into contact with was absolutely amazing. Friendly and helpful. The bartender Mitch was amazing and recommended some amazing drinks. Our server and everyone that assisted her was absolutely amazing. Beyond friendly and gave recommendations that did not disappoint. Very clean facility. Restrooms were nice, small parking lot available and street parking. Highly recommend and will gladly return. Consistently, the food quality at this location remains exceptional. Unfortunately, the service during my recent visit fell short of expectations. We felt excessively rushed, with meals hurriedly brought out and the check presented immediately after finishing our dinner, without any inquiry about dessert or coffee preferences.

1st time here. The good and the bad. The bad 1st get yourself a reservation or else you will have to get yourself a drink and wait. The good, their customer service is damn good checked in had a drink and waited about 20 minutes even though we were told 45-1hr wait time. When our table was ready the hostess came up to me directly , so many people waiting and they remember who is who and come to rather messaging or shouting your name. The push the grilled artichoke likes its rock cocaine, we tried them and you should too. Small menu and I like that, easier decision to make . Had me the pork chop with purple cabbage, drinks on point service on point. No potatoes until dinner. Check em out I did. Make sure to get you some hot towels.

We enjoyed a delightful lunch at Houstons on a rainy Saturday afternoon. We were seated quickly and our waiter provided friendly and attentive service throughout our meal. The food arrived promptly, and both the wood-fried ribeye and California burger were cooked to perfection. The ribeye boasted a smoky flavor from the wood fire, while the California burger was juicy and packed with fresh ingredients. We will definitely be returning to Houstons in the future for another enjoyable dining experience! Be prepared to find parking to be difficult, during busy times of the day.

Cashless place NOW. Dont take AMERICAN USA money.. sitting assignment is based on race .they surrogate their customers by their color of their skin. Please, next time you eat @ Houston, look how the hostess, (which been working there over 10years), seat the customers. If beginning to feel like a prejudiced restaurant. Restaurants like this are going to destroy our country by not accepting US dollars. They dont seat parties over 5. Certain people can only wear hats and jerseys ( white people) in the dining area. This is our this is our community, and we need to stand up to restaurants like this whos taking our rights away from us. US dollar is what makes this country strong. If you do not have a credit card, you can not eat at this restaurant .They will not serve you. Most cashless places a machine where you can put cash in and get a gift card this face do not take American money. Ive been going to Houston since it has been open. Velvet Turtle before. There are so many negative chances in this restaurant. Makes you feel like the owner doesnt care about the customers because he has multiple restaurants now.

The restaurant offers great steaks and side dishes and sushi at a rather affordable price compared to equally palatable competitors. However seating of parties of more than 4 are discouraged as the restaurant often tells patrons that no more than parties of 4 are seated, and thats with the webpage stating that they do. Regarding payment, the establishment does not accept cash, making it a no for patrons who do not have have credit cards or debit card. The servers are very welcoming and will assist each other in providing this type of service. There is limited parking, in the establishments parking lot. I would encourage the adjacent parking structure, but there are some reports of theft in said structure. Overall, this indeed is a great place to dine.
