Simple Simon's Bakery & Bistro

My family is just about the pickiest there is. No matter where we go, someone always complains. So it really says a lot when not one single family member complained about any aspect of Simple Simon's.

I have never experienced faster service. I was still getting my drink when one of my guests informed me that the food had already arrived. This may sound like the food was rushed, but it was perfectly prepared despite the speed with which it was delivered to the table.

The French toast was exquisitely textured with a thick depth and balance of crispness and chewiness. The bacon was crunchy and full-flavored. The omelets were just right in size and consistency and the croissant breakfast sandwich was big, flavorful, and satisfying.

The prices were about $10-20 per person and reasonable for the quality. The busy-ness changed dramatically while we were there, so it can go from dead to busy in seconds, bit it's worth it no matter what!

Is there any way to give it a 6 star? This place is absolutely incredible. It’s a great location. It has a cool vibe and the food is outstanding. I would almost come across the country just to come to breakfast here once a month. If you’re in the area, this is a must go to trust me. I absolutely love it

Had breakfast on our first visit. We tried the vegetarian omelette and the egg plate with chicken apple sausage and fried potatoes. Everything tasted great. For pastries we tried the chocolate chip walnut cookie and the raspberry croissant which was our favorite. We visited on a Tuesday morning and it wasn’t very busy but there were plenty people there and service was pretty fast. Coffee is self serve and they have stations where you can grab your own boxes to go. Will definitely have to visit again.

I’m officially addicted to their Tomato Soup. It’s the perfect comfort food, especially on a chilly day.

And don’t even get me started on the pastries! They look and taste amazing. My only complaint is that the sandwich portions are so generous that I couldn’t find room for more pastries after my meal.

While there are plenty of places to grab a bite in the downtown area, you would be missing out if you didn't make a stop at Simple Simon's. I came here for a quick bite and was impressed by the variety of pastries and wonderful smells coming from this bistro. I had the chicken apple sausage on a croissant and it was glorious, I mean it hit the spot for me that morning 🎯 paired with the fresh squeezed orange juice, I felt really good after breakfast. The best part is if you are full, you can always order some dessert to go. Absolutely enjoyed my visit and will be returning very soon.

This a great Riverside venue across from the famous Mission Inn on the Main Street Mall. The menu items are very Continental and very eclectic. Apple sausage options, Terrific baked choices. A very relaxed atmosphere. Wheelchair accessibility: The restaurant is a bit off the street and accessibility inside is a bit tight but very doable.

Love this restaurant! The Winter omelet is outstanding! They have many delicious pastries. The lemon cheesecake bar is great. Not too sweet. The staff who took my order was very pleasant. I like that they offer veggies with a side of ranch with my sandwich. Not everyone likes chips or fries with their sandwiches. The Boston Ian sandwich is outstanding. Youre offered choice of meat with that sandwich. The one thing I wish the would fix is to put the Boston Ian sandwich on the website so you can order online. Its not on the choices online. Highly recommend this place.

Finally got to try this place while staying at the Mission Inn, the line was out the door and took a while to order our food but it was so worth it. I got the breakfast croissant sandwich and it was so yummy. Went back for lunch the next day and even got a cake slice that was super good!

While there are plenty of places to grab a bite in the downtown area, you would be missing out if you didnt make a stop at Simple Simons. I came here for a quick bite and was impressed by the variety of pastries and wonderful smells coming from this bistro. Ive been here a few times, I really dont understand why these guys are still in business. Im always hoping that when Im here something has changed, but nothing has ( the horrible customer service is still here like a truly bad itch it just wont go away ) maybe its all the young people working here that create this negative bad service environment ( young and careless tight ) Ill try giving the city of Riverside a call hopefully they can talk to management or the owners ....... Get this place running like it should. If it wasnt because of this i would give these guys 5 stars all the way Vegetarian options: Very minimal and precise ! Kid-friendliness: Adult environment ! In town for a conference. They are fast and the food was delicious. We had the croissant club breakfast sandwich. The pattys were and made and eggs cooked to order and it came with potatoes. Large enough to share. The OJ is delicious and fresh. The staff and their service is kind and quick. We will definitely be back.

Decent place, food not as good as expected but then again I think the experience is mostly on giving first impressions. The service workers seemed very rushed and not very polite. My wife ordered the black bean chili soup and it took the longest of 3 items to be completed. She said there was not enough flavor and tasted too sweet. I tried it and i agree. A $12 soup in a tiny bowl and not very good flavor. Sandwiches were decent. My son ordered a sandwich with lamb which he said was very tasty. I tried it and it was great. However I ordered a turkey sandwich and there were no flavor or any spices on the sandwich which made it bland. A sandwich at home would taste much better. Very cold atmosphere, literally it was much warmer outside and the outside probably much more pleasant then our cold experience.

Simple simons bakery was recommended to me by a coworker who had hyped this unassuming eatery. I thought they had oversold it until I went in person. I went in on a Tuesday morning at 12:00 during the lunch rush. Everything came out quick, after the first bite I knew I d be coming back again. I went back Saturday morning and my fiancé fell in love with everything. 5/5 stars. Could not recommend this place enough.

We were keen to visit Simple Simons based on someones review. Located opposite the Mission Inn museum store, on Main Street, its a great place, almost always crowded. I like that they have vegetarian options. We enjoyed their sandwiches. The pastries are great, especially the sticky bun and pecan bar. Im here in Riverside on a short visit and as Im leaving next week, thought Id pick up some pastries. I left the bakery feeling quite happy. When I got back home I was so disappointed to see although they had billed me for some items, they did not pack them, in spite of asking me three times for what Id ordered. So two tips when you visit 1. Check their timings 2. Check your purchase to see if everything is there.

We loved the food and service!!! Fresh bread and baked goods!! We had their sourdough grilled cheese with the works, it was amazing!!! Always great when you have fresh potato salad and not just the grocery store type. Definitely will be back again!!! Vegetarian options: My son is vegetarian and he had a good amount of options which is fantastic.

I used to work at the State building in downtown Riverside and we would go there all the time for breakfast and lunch. I retired in 2014 and just came back and ordered the deserts for myself and my family. Keep in mind that this place used to have the best food as well as desserts, but these were nothing like the ones I had gotten for years. I did find out that the place has changed ownership since I retired and that would explain the polar -opposite food quality. None of us will ever go back: it was that bad.

Wife and I enjoyed this place! Wife had the croissant breakfast sandwich and I had the vegetarian omelette both excellent and filling, ate half. Potatoes are great and sourdough bread is excellent. This place was extremely good and the staff was really friendly. We went there for breakfast and split the Denver omelet and came back for lunch. My wife had the winter salad, I had the lamb sandwich and my son had the Italian grinder. Everything was awesome!!! The restaurant was clean, the staff was friendly and the food was priced right.

Awful place, we waited an hour for 2 sandwiches that never came, how does it take an hour for 2 sandwiches? Another group of 4 got their order before us even though we were there first, we asked a waitress about this and she didn t apologize or go check on it, just told us to wait longer. Interesting we were the only non white customers, very interesting. Avoid this wreck, go somewhere else. We got a refund and left.

This place seems to have gone downhill. My mom and I both ordered chicken salads. They didn t come for 20 minutes so we went to check on the kitchen and they had completely forgotten our order. Not to mention there was barely any chicken on the salad which was given to me with the wrong dressing and wasn t even tossed. Can t believe I tipped them 8$ too what a Shame

I m traveling for work stopped by to have breakfast in the morning and went right back for lunch. The food is flavorful and fresh and the service matched! I don t remember the last time I went to a restaurant and got 3 for 3. Great food, great service, and affordable! I had the 2 egg breakfast and sticky roll for breakfast and grilled cheese, tomato soup and pasta salad for lunch. I still have half of my lunch left, great portion and value! Highly recommend!

Came across it by accident, definitely recommend this place. Customer service was amazing. The food was delicious, it tasted fresh, like home made. I order the French toast with orange juice. The orange juice was freshly squeezed, the bread on the French toast tasted like freshly baked bread. Will definitely return to try other items.

Simple Simons is everything but simple. Their sandwiches, pastries, salads, breakfast, etc., are the best you will ever have, and the staff is always pleasant and helpful in guiding you through their incredible menu. The quality of their bread and pastries is superb, as everything is baked fresh daily at their off-site bakery. Our family has been going there for years, and it has been the same quality since the first day they opened (pre-fire). Now they are under new ownership, and they are smart and have kept everything the same. Why ruin a good....no, great thing? Except for having to endure the challenges of covid like many businesses, they are back in full swing. Until the next visit Simple Simons!

Poor service. We ordered our food and one person of our party got their lunch. Several customers came and ordered after us. After 30 minutes we went to ask about our other two meals. When we went up to address this problem we were given a very rude response from the lady. Her excuse was they were extremely busy however we ve been here several times at lunch time during the week and regardless of being busy we always get our food on time. When asked for containers to go for our food she was rude about it. She didn t give us a bag to carry out our containers and we had to go back and ask her for some, what a rude attitude from her. I wish I knew her name however she did not have a name tag she had blond hair .

First time trying this spot, will definitely be back! Tried a few pastries there. I really liked the Xmas Cookie, chewy and baked fresh daily. But the Pecan Sticky Bun OMG- thee best I ve had! PLENTY OF SEATING, parking was not an issue, good customer service all around. I m eager to try something else new on the menu and bring a friend next time

If you are going to make an order for pickup make sure you put the pickup time 15 minutes before you are actually going to pick it up. Placed an order almost 2 hours in advance and still had to wait 15 minutes before it was ready. We started our lunch meeting late because they were late, this is not acceptable. We gave plenty of time before our order was scheduled to be picked up, it should have been ready.

Had lunch today 10/5. Cobb Salad wasn t chopped just big pieces of lettuce , no blue cheese, no bacon and it was horrible. I left the rest of the salad there. Never going back to this place. Plus they served the food in a cardboard take away box. Overpriced mediocre food

The Grumps Pastrami Sandwich with grilled onions on Rye! It was deliciosooooo. My husband and I shared it, came with choice of side. We chose their potato salad which was just how I like it. Potatoes, mustard, celery. Indoor seating and outdoor patio available Would recommend They also have tomato soup, lemon cheesecake and other pastries that we will try next time.

I paid $22 for an omelet, with sides, and orange juice. So it s probably going to be an only once in a while place. I ordered the winter omelet and fresh orange juice and my friend had the French toast with apple sausage. I never thought to put apple, onions, pecan and Gorgonzola cheese in an omelet, but it was such a tasty combination! The orange juice was very yummy too. My friend said her French toast on sour dough bread was really great! The apple sausage was very good too, it tasted so natural and fresh.

Delicious! I love brunch food and they delivered with amazing french toast with berry compote and yummy syrup I was so full! Parking is tough though but since it was a Sunday, we were able to find free parking nearby in a lot. There is outdoor seating with umbrellas or indoor seating (since it s hot in Riverside, indoor is best. Especially the private booths). The server was friendly and helpful. Prices are kinda pricey but normal inflation prices ($15 for the french toast with berries). There is free water though It smells nice inside and has a great brunch environment!

Ive been traveling the USA trying to find a better sandwhich place. Some come close, but Ive yet to find a sandwich restaurant that beats Simple Simons. When Im in SoCal I always try to grab at least one meal here!

This is a great little place to grab something to eat and a delicious cup of coffee (they serve a blend of Klatch coffee created especially for their restaurant). The outdoor patio is inviting and surrounded by trees and cute little shops. It has a European vibe. I ordered the bacon and eggs breakfast with sourdough toast. It was all delicious. The process to order is a little strange. You stand in line to order, then stand in a second line to pay, then you find a seat and they bring you your food. The only reason I didnt give it 5 stars, is I felt it was a little expensive for the type of establishment.

The bistro needs to be transparent about their additional charges. I was charged a $3.00 bread upgrade and a 3.5% credit card surcharge. These charges are not disclosed nor are they itemized on the receipt. Overpriced!

Just ate breakfast with my two kids. (1) order taker was impatient with the kids you can always get back in line (2) hair in their sausage, 4-inches, brown (3) portions were much smaller than in past. $68 for oj, croissants, and egg plate. Over priced and not so good.

Sandwich shop with carefully crafted foods made with in-house breads and other ingredients. Take a loaf home with you to keep the gluten high going for the week :) they have awesome grilled and cold sandwiches with a variety of options for sides that come with it :) Excellent baked goods too even whole pies and French pastries. Yum.

I struggled with this review. The service was fast and the staff was friendly. Unfortunately the food was not seasoned and very average. I got the chicken sausage and mushroom omelette. It was average at best. I struggled to pay what I paid for the food I received. I ve seen quite a few good reviews, but when I went there the food just wasn t that good.

STAY & EAT FARMERS MARKET TASTY I have been here twice. The first time we ate on the patio outside. It was a lovely farmers market day. The mood was vibrant, bustling, and enjoyable. This second time I got our food to go, but after walking it back to our room at the Mission Inn, which is so close it will surprise you, I wished we ate outside on the patio. Mainly, I wished this because the croissant sandwiches deserve to be eaten fresh, outside of styrofoam containers. This place has the most beautiful pasties, but they also serve sandwiches and beer! We got a couple coffees to go, and they were delicious. The staff here is really great and part of the charm. They operate like a well oiled machine, while being super polite, engaging, and pleasant. Next time we plan to try this pasta salad everyone is raving about.

This is the best place in Riverside for Breakfast! They are closed on sundays, but have a variety of omelettes, French toast, pastries and breads. Whenever I m in riverside I usually swing by for something. The croissants are very authentic and buttery goodness. The orange juice is great too! Very fast service!

This was a nice breakfast spot right along this outdoor shopping and dining plaza to check out of youre staying in the Mission Inn or somewhere nearby. Tried the French toast and the croissant breakfast sandwich. Both were really good! The croissant sandwich was huge! you could definitely share with someone if not starving. The French toast portion was generous too. The cappuccinos had flavor but where a little underwhelming as far as execution goes as they were lacking any froth, more like a latte. Also wish there were more hot sauce options than just Sriracha. Some Cholula or Tapatio would pair better with breakfast options. Overall still a decent spot. Liked the cubby seating as well as the outdoor table option. Theres a cool stained glass accent piece over the door.

Met friends there for lunch. This is a place where you order at the counter, and they bring the food to you There was no social distancing, the mask mandate wasnt being enforced. The service was extremely slow. It took over half an hour to get 5 sandwiches. One of my friends ordered potato salad as a side, but received pasta salad. However, the waitress was nice enough to bring a side of potato salad. I ordered a roast beef on rye, which cost 10.95, I requested red onion and Dijon, and received neither. The bread to meat ratio was poor. The bread was thick and tasteless, and there was hardly any meat. The side orders were small. This place is not worth it.

So I came for brunch but arrived at 11:05. So I had lunch instead. we got susies salad and the deluxe chili. It came with sourdough bread and cornbread. I felt like the cornbread was more crumbly than I would have preferred and the rest of the food was alright. I wasn t wowed or felt like I would dream of their food when I was hungry :(. ITs a cute place and if you like sandwiches and salads it s not a bad choice. The area is really nice so I definitely feel like it s a fun place to hang out at and then eat.I think I need to come back to try their baked goods or maybe their sandwiches but I just wasn t impressed with their salad and chili.

This is my favorite places to eat in Riverside... I always have an excellent experience. They have vegan- vegetarian options. Totally recommend, the prices are fare. It can get very crowded.

The grilled pastrami and swiss is spectacular! Sourdough bread is crispy yet chewy; crunchy yet soft. Perfect portion of pastrami and swiss cheese in sandwich. Pasta salad was tasty but a bit too large a portion considering the full sandwich. Come hungry, leave happy!

Food was delicious as always. Ive been coming here for years. My favorite hot sandwich is the Grilled Marinated Chicken. Favorite salad is the pasta salad. Favorite pastries... Oatmeal Raisin cookie & Molasses cookies. They also make the best sourdough bread. Yum! Super glad to see that you can now order online. I remember when they only took cash & check in the early 2000s. This place is always busy, so Im very glad to see that they implemented a convenient way to order ahead. Sorry to see some of the negative reviews. Not sure what they were expecting, but a busy restaurant is a sign of a successful restaurant. Good things are usually worth the wait.

This place is good! Got the classic pesto chicken sandwich with veggies and dip. THE DIP TASTES SO GOOD! Unfortunately they were missing some things I usually like to get, so I wonder whats going on? The service people were very nice and cool :). For dessert I got the night and day cookie, with is half white chocolate half brown chocolate covered short bread cookie. The short bread part tasted delicious, but when warm the white part tasted a bit like cheese? Dont know what thats about, maybe my taste buds are weird?

My 1st time here and it was a horrible 1st time. I specifically asked for a hot sandwich and got a cold so I asked if I can switch it with a different sandwich which was the same price and they wouldnt do it. The owner susie was super rude saying thats what I ordered, when i asked for a hot 1. She was yelling at all her workers no wonder why they all looked mad and werent smiling or greeting you at the door. The sandwich wasnt bad but not what I wanted. I ended up giving my other half to a homeless person. They all need to work on their customer service.

Ordered a chicken Caesar salad with sourdough bread. They forgot the bread and the dressing the brought was rock hard and could not be used on the salad. I asked for another dressing, they told me all they could do was give me some gloves so I could warm it up. Horrible service.

This bakery/bistro is a diamond in the rough. Their pastries and breads look as good as they taste. Ive had their strawberry rhubarb tart, yummmmmm. Their sandwiches are delicious. My favorite is the tuna melt, I often find myself dreaming of this sandwich, I live 2 hours away. The potato salad is one of the best, made with mustard and has a satisfying crunch, from celery, i think.

Everything is fresh! They are big on vegetables and the fresh bakery has crusty breads and baked goods to buy even if you are not eating there! Love the dark atmosphere indoors and the available outdoor patio dining on the boardwalk shopping area.

First place that doesnt maintain clean tables! No one cleaning tables/sanitizing anything! Lots of homeless/lost souls sitting around the same outdoor tables. Not a good environment for dining.
