About the Company

Since 2012, this has been our flagship location on the buzzing Valencia Street corridor. Inside you’ll find a working chocolate factory; take a seat at the bar to watch our chocolate makers sort, roast, refine, temper, and transform cocoa beans into chocolate onsite. Guests can also enjoy a full café serving hot and iced chocolate drinks with homemade marshmallows and whipped cream, coffee drinks, and seasonal pastries we make in our own kitchen. Ample cafe seating is available inside our retail shop of single-origin, two-ingredient chocolate bars and tasting sets, gift boxes in our unique patterned paper, and chocolate candy and confections made in collaboration with local chocolatiers.

I absolutely adore Dandelion Chocolate. Their chocolate is so delicious, and so chocolaty. Their menu is innovative and uses chocolate in many different ways (I particularly like their drinks!). Staff are friendly, and although there is usually a line, its worth the wait. In my opinion, this is THE BEST chocolate in SF. Theyre serious about their chocolate, and the quality definitely shows through in all of their finished products. They might seem a bit expensive, but theyre absolutely worth it. If its cold out, I really like their Mission hot chocolate (slight spicy kick!), and if its hot out, I like their horchata (which is chocolaty!). Its a must-visit for me when Im in SF. For me, this is a takeout kinda place, because it is always busy and the interior is kinda cramped. Chances of snagging a table are low, and if you do, its going to be super loud anyway. Bonus: if youre trying to avoid dairy, they have a good amount of dairy-free options!

I haven t actually been to the shop, but I m reviewing my online experience. I had to email them with a lot of questions, and they were quick to respond and helpful. I ordered the hot chocolate mixes. I got gingerbread, the house one, and the mocha. They re very simple blends with sugar and chocolate. The mocha has coffee, and the gingerbread has spicesr. They re all real chocolate that s grated into a crumbled consistency for easy melting. You use about 3 TBS per cup. I used them in my hot chocolate machine, but unfortunately, it s finicky, and this still isn t quite fine enough to dump it all in at once, but if you just spend a few extra seconds to let the milk heat a little and wait a few seconds between adding each spoonful, it s fine. IT S SO GOOD! I was really worried about it being overly sweet, and it s not. In fact, my partner wanted to add a little additional sweetener (instead, I added whipped cream, and he said that made it sweet enough). The regular House chocolate is really good, and the Mocha is incredible. I ve had a million coffee-chocolate concoctions, but none quite like this. It s just a little different and about as close to perfect as I can imagine. The slight bitterness of the cocoa with the coffee and being not super sweet just makes it amazing. I think next time, I ll try it with a spoonful of molasses in it. The seasonal Gingerbread one is delicious! It s surprisingly gingery, and not cinnamony, like I was anticipating. Ginger is definitely the forefront flavor. The only negative is that this one is just a tiny bit gritty, but I would expect as much with the punch of spice that s in this. All of these flavors are VEGAN! I looked high and low for mocha hot chocolate flakes that were vegan (and not insanely priced), and let me tell you, it s slim pickings in the US. And can we talk about the freaking adorable glass vials the chocolate comes in?!?! It s a way better deal to buy the bag, but now I have to buy more of the jars just because they look so stinking cute in my moody kitchen. I really want them to offer the grated or flaked chocolate without sugar, so that I can use whatever sweetener I want (vegan honey, molasses, strawberry or apple syrup, agave, maple syrup/sugar, etc). But I d also like to see them offer other flavors too! Like chocolate raspberry. Or maybe a hibiscus-rose infused (pink) cocoa butter hot chocolate? Or a white chocolate apple cider (I have a recipe for this and it s delicious!). I haven t tried the rest of their products, but if I m over here raving about hot chocolate, I m sure the rest are delicious too.

The chocolate related experiences on offer aside from products on sale are varied and we wanted to do something a little different on our first visit to SF from the UK, so opted for the Chocolate 101 course on a Wednesday evening. Its a fantastic experience that didnt disappoint! On a mezzanine floor at the rear of the Valencia Street shop, Graham guided a small group of 7 through the basics of chocolate composition; introducing and taste sampling the most common ingredients used in chocolate production, and asking the group to assess various finished products (of varying quality and manufacturer) to profile their ingredients by taste, texture, and mouth feel alone. The result was enlightening, fun and informative. The group we joined was friendly and not shy to offer thoughts and ask questions - all of which were expertly answered by our host. To end it all, a cup of hot chocolate from the cafe that tasted even better with a little knowledge of how much thought and consideration goes into its creation. Top marks Dandelion Chocolate! Our SF experience has been enhanced by this great introduction that we would recommend to anyone Setting: perfect Host: fun, informative, knowledgeable Group: friendly, interested, mixed Recommend? I recently went to Dandelion Chocolate, and while I liked the design and the atmosphere inside, there were some things that could be better. When I asked about dairy-free options, the person at the register wasn t very helpful. They just told me that what I wanted couldn t be made dairy-free but didn t suggest any alternatives. I had to keep asking what I could get, and even then, they didn t seem to understand that I was concerned about dairy. I had to confirm multiple times that the options they mentioned were actually dairy-free. When our order was ready, we thanked them, but they didn t make any eye contact or acknowledge us, which made the service feel really poor. The chocolates they sell on the shelves are pretty expensive, though it s nice that you can sample some of them. The hot chocolates and horchata I ve tried before are thick and creamy, which might be good for a sip or two, but they re so rich that it s hard to even share them between two people. It would be nice if they offered lighter or dairy-free options for people like me who are sensitive to dairy. Overall, because of the poor service, I don t think I d want to go back unless I m with a friend who really wants to go. Even then, I probably wouldn t buy anything for myself. Dietary restrictions: Not very accommodating of dietary restrictions or even friendly about it. The options are not marked for the restrictions on the menu.

Dandelion makes fantastic, complex, interesting dark chocolates. They taste like fruit, and wine, and coffee, when their only ingredients are cocoa and water. Their drinking chocolates are fabulously rich, even the iced ones, and their baked goods are pretty amazing. I am not one for high praise, and I think their chocolate raspberry brownies are the best brownies I ve ever had in my life. They re impossibly moist, tart, and delicious. The three bar gift set is the perfect corporate gift; everyone I have sent it to has really loved it. It s a special and unique taste of San Francisco for people who don t live nearby, and it s kind of an experience because it comes with fun tasting notes. It s really expensive - I wish they did sales - but it s kind of a scarcity makes it more precious kind of thing. It makes it something to savor.

TLDR: great chocolate & horrendous service. Dandelions chocolate lives up to the hype. Ive been a fan for years. However, the service of employees at this specific location has really deteriorated over time. In my last couple of visits, the staff seems consistently disgruntled. The most recent visit has been by far the worst experience. I was called to the counter to pick up my large order for four people. When I got there, I asked the employees if everything on the counter were mine. I was told Yes and thus carried everything back to my table. When I went back to the counter later to check in on the rest of the drinks, the employee at the counter scolded me for checking in. In addition, she complained that I took someone elses drink earlier on and she had to make them another one. I explained that I was called to the counter to pick up the order, and had in fact double checked that everything I was picking up was indeed mine and received an affirmative response. She ignored what I said and continued to chastise me for taking someone elses order. At this point, her coworker interceded and said she was the one who said yes and thought I was referring to the food only. I left the counter at this point as it was clear that neither employee was going to own up to the situation or simply apologize, lest treat a paying customer with respect. It truly left a bad taste in my mouth. I understand this location gets really busy and the staff is likely overwhelmed, but it is still no excuse for the way they treat customers. The staff at the Dandelion Factory nearby is much nicer and actually seems to care about having customers. Avoid this location if you can. I will not be returning.

Dandelion Chocolate offers a unique experience for chocolate lovers, with in-house production, single-origin chocolate drinks, and even chocolate-making classes. The highlight of the visit was definitely the free samples - trying different dark chocolates from around the world while waiting in line was a fun way to explore their offerings. They forgot my order, and I had to remind them after waiting for 15 minutes (when I saw folks who ordered after me get their drinks before me) The Florentine, a chocolate sandwich with an orange and lavender-scented almond cookie, was a miss. The cookie wasnt crispy, which is a key element of the Florentine experience. However, they did redeem themselves with the Canele, a delightful rum-infused custard with a caramelized shell. It was perfectly gooey and delicious. The European drinking chocolate was another highlight thick, hot, and rich, perfect for dark chocolate enthusiasts. It even came with a complimentary cookie, which was a nice touch. Overall, Dandelion Chocolate has some interesting concepts and delicious elements like the Canele and drinking chocolate. However, the lack of crispness in the Florentine and the focus on dark chocolate might limit the appeal for some. If youre a die-hard dark chocolate fan who wants to experience unique chocolate creations, Dandelion Chocolate might be worth a try.

Dandelion Chocolate has gained a well-deserved reputation as a purveyor of exceptional artisanal chocolates. As I sit down to write this review, the memory of their delectable creations lingers on my taste buds, leaving a lasting impression. First and foremost, what sets Dandelion Chocolate apart is their commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Each chocolate bar is carefully crafted from bean to bar, with a meticulous attention to detail. Their dedication to sourcing high-quality cacao beans directly from farmers is evident in the complexity and richness of flavors found in their chocolates. One aspect that truly stands out is the variety of flavors and origins they offer. Dandelion Chocolates offerings span from single-origin bars to unique limited-edition releases, each showcasing the distinct characteristics of the cacao beans and the terroir they were grown in. From the fruity and floral notes of their Madagascar bars to the deep and earthy tones of their Ecuadorian creations, there is something to entice every chocolate connoisseur. Moreover, Dandelion Chocolates commitment to transparency and ethical practices is commendable. They work directly with farmers, ensuring fair and sustainable sourcing practices that benefit both the communities and the environment. This level of transparency instills confidence in their products and allows consumers to savor their chocolates with a clear conscience. In terms of texture and mouthfeel, Dandelion Chocolate excels. Their bars exhibit a smooth, velvety consistency that melts luxuriously on the palate. The balance of flavors and the attention to the chocolates texture create a truly indulgent experience. It is worth mentioning that Dandelion Chocolates dedication to the craft extends beyond their bars. Their café and dessert offerings are equally impressive, featuring a range of delectable treats, from hot chocolate to pastries and truffles. The passion and expertise displayed in their creations are evident in every bite. While the quality of Dandelion Chocolate is undeniable, its worth noting that their products do come at a premium price. However, considering the exceptional craftsmanship, ethical sourcing, and the unique flavor profiles they offer, the price is justified for those seeking an elevated chocolate experience. In conclusion, Dandelion Chocolate sets a high standard in the world of artisanal chocolates. Their commitment to quality, ethical practices, and flavor innovation shines through in every bar. For chocolate enthusiasts seeking a remarkable sensory journey and a taste of true craftsmanship, Dandelion Chocolate is an experience not to be missed.

If in the Mission district, definitely come by this shop. Staff was very patient, since it was our first trip, and were quite helpful and prompt. Wonderful place.

The pastries are definitely very good and well made and I could tell they were made that same day. As good as the pastries are, the coffee is better. I was really impressed by the coffee. They also sell chocolate which is what they are known for.

I resisted going here for ages because I knew that once I went, I would just crave it regularly. It s true . Weekly visits for that euro hot chocolate . It s the most intensely delicious velvety not overly sweet chocolate shot I can no longer live without.

Love it. Absolutely delicious drinking chocolate . Technically it s hot chocolate. But who are we kidding? It s basically melted chocolate in a cup. Rich. Intense. Worth it. Not a ton of seating. Awesome baked goods. Amazing chocolate bar selection from all over the world.

Its better than I thought :) This is a place that is serious about chocolate. I had house hot chocolate and canelé. The hot chocolate has a basic taste but is well balanced. The cannelé was, on the outside and inside, the juiciest canelé Ive ever tasted. It tastes like chocolate! Because it was chocolate chocolate, I had a blood sugar shock and was a bit dazed, but there was water, so I ate it until the end. It was nice to be able to taste chocolate. The set of 3 was $2 cheaper, so I bought it as a gift. Since it is a place where the process is directly carried out from the cocoa bean, there is a good factory tour, so if you have time, it would be a good idea to give it a try! +Add I went on a factory tour the next day and was satisfied. Recommended.

Free samples. Yes, the chocolate is expensive, but its well worth it. My favorite dark chocolate bar is the 70% dark Kokoa Kamili, Tanzania. Their black sesame seed toffee brittle is something I cant leave without, but I sometimes inhale the entire package by the time I get home. The lines sometimes get long, but if youre not waiting for an espresso drink like their marocchino, the checkout process is very efficient. There are baskets you can use to carry your treats around as you browse and sample the displays which flank the cozy seating area. They used to sell bags of raw beans for local roasters, but that was sadly removed since the pandemic. They still offer a dense schedule of various classes and tastings, and dont forget that the factory is about a 15 minute walk away! Vegetarian options: Their chocolate bars are vegan, and some of their chocolate covered items like almonds and espresso beans; are also vegan. There are many products that contain dairy, but are clearly labeled and the employees are knowledgeable enough to inform of the vegetarian options if asked.

This is a fun experience. All the different chocolate from different countries with very different flavor profile. They also do some fun baked or liquid options with chocolate. Last minute decided to get a cold hot chocolate... so good. Very rich and to much fit my wife, but I enjoyed it fully. Bought some bars as well, that was a good decision, and I think $10 for a bar isnt a bad deal.

MISSION HOT CHOCOLATE AMERICANO LEMON POPPYSEED CAKE The hot chocolate tastes like ginger and is very spicy. Its a little less sweet than milk chocolate, and the ginger is strong, so it doesnt feel that sweet. The chocolate in the cake is hard and the batter is also hard. I like it so much that its filling It was just too sweet, but the crunchy texture of POPPYSEED was delicious.

One of my favorite chocolate places. Very high quality. This location is an eatery and a store. Try the chefs sampler if you want to try unique items that incorporate chocolate. The smores and the chocolate chip cookie are also very good. Im going to try the brownies next.

I came here with some friends and we ordered a brownie bite flight, european drinking chocolate, frozen hot chocolate, and a brownie covered in sprinkles. It was incredibly tasty but the european drinking chocolate is definitely an acquired taste. It does not taste like the american version which was a complete shock to me.
