Solid spot! Eaten here a few times. Good happy hour on one side by the bar, but also kid-friendly on the other. Highlights are the ceviche, the skirt steak, vampiro tacos, and the Oaxacan old fashioned. Parking: Free lot under the hotel w/ validation

Let me start by saying I was a solo female Asian and went in ..no high nothing and they made me wait and a super duper racist and ignored behavior. I am staying in their hotel. The food that came on the table was very badly kept on the table. Not sure if they were tired or didnt want to see a foreign face. Please realize we live with a globalized workforce. Bottom line; Shame on you!

I ve eaten here several times as it s next to the hotel I m staying at. I think overall it s 3/5 star restaurant. I had the chicken sandwich with bbq chips and the barbobua tacos with rice and beans. One drink of rum and coke. Tacos were small, not worth it for the price. The rice and beans were also a small portion. The chicken was overcooked. The chips were delicious. Rum and coke is overpriced. The food overall was kinda bland, nothing I would brag about to friends but edible. I just really couldn t taste the difference between this place and similar rated places. The staff was 5/5, very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is good, 4/5. It s clean, spacious and modern. I want to give this restaurant a 4/5 stars but I just can t. Everything I ordered, with tip, was over 50 bucks and I don t feel I got my monies worth. My ratings: 5/5 Michelin quality 4/5 delicious; worth coming again 3/5 average; may eat again 2/5 fast food quality 1/5 made me sick

WOW we had a phenomenal meal here. Susan Feniger and Mary Sue are first off, female chef legends and they are so warm and hospitable and you can feel that in the restaurant. Stand out dishes was the chili rellenitos bit sized chili relenos which were delicious! They also do a beautiful branzino similiar to how they make it at Contramar in CDMX. Butterflied open and roasted with with dual color salsa on top. We also had their tamarind chicken which was to die for! Always end your meal with the guava empanada stuffed with cream cheese. YUM

The food is good! But it s very much a California take on Tex Mex, so you lose a bit of authenticity. I think the burrito was my favorite but a bit odd that it came with such a simple side salad instead of something more interesting or authentic. The esquite corn was well seasoned. Tacos were alright but I would rather be eating them from a street side taco stand. The interior was very comfortable and well decorated. Parking is available underground.

Great food and atmosphere. Mexican food on a whole new level. We love everything about this place. From the moment you walk in the staff is incredibly professional and friendly from the front to the back. Tacos here are a work of art and the ingredients and flavor profiles incredible. Each dish is unique and creative and the prices are so reasonable for Santa Monica. The cocktails are equally inventive and fun. And save room for the deserts. The chocolate brownie is a work of art and the most wonderful chocolate and not to be undone but the churros. We cant wait to return and explore more of the menus!

Deserves FAR more recognition and patrons - this is one of the best spots in west LA. The restaurant has two celebrity chefs...and their menu is amazing. Everything is good, I have never gotten anything I havent liked. Try their happy hour!! It is a very good deal and you can try and assortment of things you like.

First off they are very fast at delivering the food so order apitizers first then tacos. Everything is very clean luxe high end tasting vibe. It s incredibly well done, from the super crispy non-greasy chips to basically every taco they have. It s high-quality fancy, not pretentious at all. And the salsa macha is so good and not very spicy at all.

Wanted to try this spot out for awhile and why not for Happy Hour. However, will gladly pass on this if I had to go back again. Service: A little odd when first entering based on the non-verbal cues from the lady at the front. Bartender was nice and overall service was average. Food: OAXACAN OLD FASHIONED = Pretty good. SOCALO Burger = Extremely salty with too much brioche bun when you bite, would not order again. AGUACHILE FLAUTAS = Comes cold and hard pass PATO S SPINACH QUESO DIP = Pass, too watery GOBERNADOR TACO = The most average item tried Mushroom Dobladita = Average but too greasy when biting Ambience: Clean overall, nothing major pop-out. Vegetarian options: Labeled on menu Dietary restrictions: Noted clearly on menu

UPDATE! June 2024 Counter Service Only. You order, pay and then the staff will lead you to your table. I recommend reading the menu ahead of time, since there are a lot of good options, and there is only one line. Weekday Lunch specials are a good deal for $9.95 and add $2 for a soda or ice tea. However,I ordered the Socalo Burrito/ chicken which comes with a beautiful salad, approximately $14. My friend ordered the shishito peppers and a bowl of tortilla soup. She enjoyed the shishito peppers, but the soup was a bit salty. I didnt taste it. The food presentation is beautiful. The service, not so much. The soup and shishito peppers came out within minutes! My burrito took another 15 minutes. I found 2 chicken bones in the first 2 bites. I told my friend to eat and not wait for me, thank goodness. We both only had ice water, and I asked for refills twice before getting my glass refilled. Granted it was lunch time, even when the server acknowledged that I wanted water twice! We both wanted to order the trio of sorbets but when we looked at the line to ORDER.... we decided to leave. Shame. I guess I could of ordered the sorbets when we placed our lunch order, but ..... I am giving 4 stars total because the service and that this is no longer a Full Service restaurant. I almost want to give them 3.5 stars, but .... -------------------------------- This review is for their Happy Hour! ( Wednesday - Saturday) They have Happy Hour Monday-Saturday. The hours differ on Saturday ( 3-5pm). Parking is validated for 90 minutes. Enter the subterranean garage just south of Santa Monica Blvd. We both loved the El Picante margarita for the hot spice kick! I also ordered the Chinola margarita which has passionfruit, mint and lime. The Chinola is smooth and sweet. I chose the Poblano Quesadilla and added chicken for $4 more.II forgot to take a photo, sorry. It was perfect for my meal. I really liked all the flavors. My friend ordered the Nopal Tostada, beautifully presented and tasty. She also ordered a Birria (lamb), and she enjoyed it. We shared the Baked Nachos!!! This was really a wonderful textured tasty dish! Because it was baked, the tortillas were crispy! I loved it! I recommend their Happy Hour Menu for food and drink! I returned to check out their all day and night Taco Tuesday! The Taco Tuesday menu is fantastic! There are seafood, beef, pork, chicken and veggies options! The Taco Tuesday menu has more options than the Happy Hour menu ( Wednesday- Saturday) , and it s all day and night ( during restaurant hours) so I would choose coming here for Taco Tuesday!

1st Visit: Dinner here last on the patio was just lovely in every way. First, the service was impeccable. Our server was patient, friendly, knowledgeable, and good humored. Every employee who touched our table was professional and kind. And something I havent experienced in a long time happened--the manager checked in with us at the end of our meal. The chips are thick and warm. Three very different salsas for whatever your palate prefers. Watch out for the super spicy one! The ceviche was delicious! Texturally on point and the right amount of citrus. Normally I dont like shrimp in my fish ceviche but the shrimp pieces were cut small and I actually enjoyed their addition. The corn dish was also superb. The drinks are good but I recommend starting during happy hour so theyre not so expensive. Cant wait to go back and try the tacos. Subsequent visit: Socalo continues to delight me. The chips and salsa are mouth watering good. Great drinks. I always enjoy the ceviche. The carne asada tacos are good, though I did think the tortilla was chewy in a weird way--hard to bite off. The service was just wonderful as usual.

Dont come hungry! The good news is they are saving the fish & chicken population. I ordered fish tacos and each of them had on it a couple of microscopic pieces of what was probably tilapia. This order wouldnt even qualify as an appetizer at most restaurants. My wife had chicken tacos dorados. I remember that because I helped her try to find a couple of tiny little pieces of chicken that appeared to be buried somewhere in these rather small tacos. We wont be going back here unless its for appetizers & drinks before going to a real restaurant. $30 later we were still hungry.

I visited Socalo two days in a row. I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious the food was and the service was five star. Thank you so much to Renata and Donald for making this a wonderful experience. They made good suggestions, they made any kind of accommodations happen. The second day I visited with my cousin who had to bring his little dog because he had been attacked by coyotes a few days earlier and needed constant attention and they have us a really nice heated outside seat on the patio. After the meal, Donald surprised us with a little dessert compliments of the house. Thank you again and I highly recommend this place. Didnt forget to take a picture with the flower wall as that was also suggested to us.

Delicious Mexican fusion with a modern twist. As a Mexican with a discerning palate, I was impressed by El Zocalos menu and flavorful dishes. They offer a unique blend of traditional Mexican cuisine with a touch of American influence, creating a truly enjoyable dining experience. While the restaurant doesnt strictly adhere to authentic flavors, the food is delicious and satisfying. The addition of soft mariachi music in the background would further enhance the ambiance and transport diners to Mexico. I also appreciated the restaurants parking validation, as parking in the area can be challenging. Overall, El Zocalo is a great choice for those seeking a modern take on Mexican cuisine with a vibrant atmosphere.

I did not rate this restaurant the first time I went, but the food was really good. I went for a second time tonight, excited to take my friends and family and was highly disappointed. The delicious chicken poblano enchiladas were no longer on the menu and everything else was pretty lackluster. We started with some appetizers and one I was really looking forward to were the Chilitos Rellanos. They were so undercooked they were not even edible, and when I told the server, he took them away, never came back to tell me anything (like he was taking them off my bill, no apology, nothing!) finally I had to ask the host/server what happened and he basically told me that was the last order they had, apologized but he didn t even say they would take them off the bill. I ordered the GOBERNADOR shrimp tacos. They were okay, nothing special & my cousin ordered from the specials menu, the fried chicken tacos, in which she didn t like at all, she said they were overcooked, not seasoned and too sweet. Last thing I want to add, is that I got a bad vibe as soon as I walked in. It was about 5:45 PM, the restaurant was basically empty. They only had a few tables occupied. I was asked if I had a reservation, in which I did not, and the host told me the only thing they had available was at the high tables in the bar. I found it a little odd, because that would mean every table in the house had a 6 PM reservation. However, the restaurant basically stayed just about the same as far as the number of diners the entire time we were there. By the time we were done with our meal, the restaurant still had quite a few open tables. I definitely felt some type away about that because they could ve squeezed us in at a dining table as there was plenty of time to do so as customers weren t starting to arrive until after we were actually leaving. It s unfortunate, but I will not be going back to this restaurant. This restaurant isn t close to good enough to need a reservation nor pay these prices.

A great experience and great food. We ordered the Queso spinach dip with chips. The chips are endless and we were only served in small portions so they were hot at all times! We also ordered two tacos each, the Cana asada and the al pastor tacos. The meat was not chewy! It was a bit dry at time (Al pastor) and the ingredients did not really come together that well, but still great. Everyone was very friendly but we did have to ask for a refill on chips and water often. I would definitely recommend getting the chips with some sort of dip!

Delicious food at fair prices- A little piece of posh Mexico City in Santa Monica. The serving sizes much smaller than the typical USA mexican locale but with such perfectly curated flavor/texture pairings it doesnt take much to feel satisfied. Didnt try any items from the large plates section so perhaps look there if your appetite requires or simply plan to select a couple dishes from the other menu sections. Can confirm that the lamb barbacoa tacos melted in the mouth. For any vegans out there, the jackfruit tinga tacos are a yummy vegan alternative and arrive at your table ready to eat, pre- topped with pickled onions and crispy jalapeno. ,>*) service was a bit slow but again, this complemented the chill vibe. Well be back for sure.

5 first bites out of 10 were almost all fat, tortilla was like trying to cut paper or cardboard, my hand began to hurt from pressing so hard to cut it so I gave up and got a steak knife. Well, youre thinking: you could pick it up and just bite it right? Yes, tried that, super greasy all over my hand, guess thats why they put the paper under everything, either to absorb some of the grease(?) or to make it easier for them to clean,(?) not just to make it slide around as you struggle to cut through stale tortilla. The WHOLE POINT of eating out is to have THE RESTAURANT do the heavy lifting, not to inconvenience the customer to make it easier on those working! I hate the attitude of this place: its better for them to charge you first, sucker you into giving a bigger tip than you would after you experience the poor food and service. Seats and table were dirty. Straws for drinks are NOT PROTECTED from CONTAMINATION by a paper wrapper, and TOUCHED BY EVERYONE who tries to get one from the glass full of straws they set out FOR YOU TO HELP YOURSELF TO. GROSS! And if they think THATS ok, what OTHER HIDEOUSLY DISGUSTING things are they doing in the kitchen!? Silverware seemed clean, but spotty, like theyre using the cheapest soap they can... The whole experience had way too many red flags... They charge you for the meal first and ask for a tip, you order by queuing up at the bar, so kind of a fast food experience. Learned my lesson, Im never tipping before I get the food and service again, theyve obviously found they get better tips BEFORE people experience the food and service.... Poor service, had to go get the steak knife myself, asked what kind of tortilla it was, regular, not some weird gluten free or something as I suspected for this area and the atmosphere theyre trying to project, so theyre just serving up stale, average food in what looks like an upscale setting, but not worth what theyre charging for it. $10 specials seemed like a good deal until we saw what we got for it, two TINY fried tacos that were incredibly average that had barely any meat/ingredients for my wife, and a burrito 1/4 the size of any burrito Ive had before. Ah well, Im trying to lose weight anyway, this way I wont have to wrangle leftovers, so I tried to be positive about it... But... My birria beef was barely shredded, causing me to have to practically do surgery to separate the huge gobs of fat from the beef, and struggling again to carve off a piece of beef from the huge chunk. And they CHARGE $5 for a small plate of stale hard tortilla chips and salsa, so we ended up paying $50 for this meal when we would have enjoyed fast food more than this nonsense. I was literally SAWING through my tough burrito like WOOD to carve off a huge chunk. I left one bite behind I was so disgusted and fed up with the whole experience, and to signal them something was wrong, but they already had my money, so I doubt they care. Unless youre working nearby and willing to pay the premium for average food and location, youll have a better experience somewhere else. Comically bad. SO BAD that I have to think a lot of, if not the majority, of the good reviews are fake... Especially supposedly foodies raving about this place? No way. Maybe if they just THINK theyre foodies but have bad taste? I just dont believe it, and we all know there are fake review service businesses... I mean, if your TWO specials BOTH suck...

My wife and I had our pre-wedding welcome event at Socalo. And it was AMAZING! The food is delicious always and the drinks were so good, everyone who attended raved for days after on how it was the best executed evening they ve ever been to. Thank you to Donald, the manager and all the staff for a wonderful evening! They really brought things together trust this place will deliver if you decide to host your event here. Also, walk in and make it a priority to try their jackfruit tacos and amazing dishes anytime. We ll be back again and again Vegetarian options: So many veggie and vegan options, its honestly one of the best restaurants in the area for it!

SoCaLOSE to being a perfect Mexican restaurant. The food is fresh and the staff is well trained and friendly. They love my dog. Takeaway is fast too. Excellent salsa. Margs are ok. They just aren t consistent. Brunch is great but good coffee and a better wine would take it up a notch.

Food here is incredible! I had a cup of the Pozole, a Chicken Dorado taco and the Chilitos Rellenos. Pozole was fresh with perfected broth. I added their homemade habanero sauce to bring in more heat. The Dorado chicken taco was by far the BEST taco I have ever had at the hundreds of Mexican restaurants I have visited across the country. The Rellenos were equally delicious and fresh and a unique change for the pallet compared to traditional poblano. I highly recommend visiting this restaurant. Food is fresh, service is perfect!

Brunch with friends Pros: Very nice venue, and food tasted delicious. The portions are very reasonable, filling but not too big that goes to waste. The toast with avocado and smoked salmon was splendid - recommended! There are many tables outside, in the shade and well isolated from the alley. You can park for free for 90 minutes in the hotel nearby. Cons: It took a while to serve the food Vegetarian options: Definitely, there are vegetarian options in the menu. We did not try them though. Parking: You can park in the hotel parking nearby. 90 minutes free. Wheelchair accessibility: There were 2 folks in a wheelchair in a table nearby and redid nit have any problem

Delicious fideo and birria tacos. Came here for the brunch menu with my family. Great service and excellent authentic cuisine. I would highly recommend this restaurant and bar to any one in the area. Parking is down stairs in the hotel next door. Enjoy the ambiance! 6 stars!! Vegetarian options: You can ask for veggie or meat dairy free options. Dietary restrictions: I asked about soy and kosher dietary restrictions and the chefs are happy to comply. Parking: Parking is free for 90 minutes with validation. Its down stairs in the hotel parking structure. Kid-friendliness: Saw several families here eating with many kids.

Socalo looks the goods from the outside, and the inside is fine, though a little tired and dishevelled. The food is variable. The jackfruit tacos are good; lots of texture and pop. Unfortunately, the beans and rice are as dull as that guy you sat next to at school that you forget. The yellow tail cervice is the puck of the meals. Generous as an external European grandmother (well, mine was) and all the boxes ticked. The cauliflower comes in a processed-tasting gloop better suited to putting up wallpaper. Hits and misses are fine with radio. But the misses turn us to the dronal consistency of Spotify. If youre ok with the luck of the draw, you may do well here.

Socalo is a gem, hidden in a hotel - with incredibly delicious food! Their epic breakfast quesadillas and french toast are worth the trip alone. Plus, a full bar with excellent drinks (and even an amazing aqua fresca). Parking is easy on the garage below and service is friendly. Simply put, this place has exceedingly good food from renown chefs and is worth the trip any day!

Very expensive place for the small portions they serve. Just upon receiving my dish I noticed the presence of a hair in my food, so they offered me to exchange the dish for another, given the situation I witnessed, I was hungry and I refused. At no time did they offer to reimburse me for the price I paid for ordering a dish which was prepared without the corresponding sanitary measures. I dont recommend this place.

Arrived just before closing and was pleasantly greeted and seated. My son and I started with the guacamole and chips and we both had the Tomahawk Pork Carnita. Both were outstanding; the chips were fresh and warm with great salsa, and the pork and side salad were incredible. We had great service, and never felt like the late arrival was an inconvenience. Thank you for this unexpected treat - it was a great end to a great holiday

Great service. Staff was very nice. We enjoyed the food on our visit. I had steak tacos and my mom had the fish tacos. All very well prepared and served week a side of beans and rice with a squash and pumpkin seed side. Recommend you all for the chili sauces. They brought out a couple delicious sauces. Enjoyed music too!
