McKenna's Tea Cottage is a quaint upscale tea room in the heart of Old Town Seal Beach, California. We serve tea sandwiches, delicious scones, salads, soups and more. Our McKenna's Special Blend tea is out of this world. We serve over 60 specialty teas. There is something for everyone's liking.
We also offer tea parties for Baby, Wedding Showers, as well as children's birthday parties. Plan on sharing that special occasion with us.
This is our go to tea place. My daughters and I go at least once every year. The selection of teas is extensive, with seasonal additions. The service is attentive and friendly, the atmosphere relaxed. Dining out on the patio is so pleasant. We have tried most of the food items; we love the quiches, soup, and scones the most! Good selection of tea sandwiches and mini desserts, if you choose.

Service was slow and not very friendly. Very disappointed in the tea sandwiches and desserts. Sandwiches had VERY little filling and instead of cute tea cakes or cookies we got bread pudding, coffee cake and something apple and honestly, we could hardly tell what was what. The cranberry salad and tomato basil soup were very good. The patio was cute but kind of noisy being right on Main St. Maybe a higher, solid fence would block some of the noise.
When it came time to pay, it took forever to get the check. Then we had her split the check 5 ways and since I made the reservation, and paid for the deposit, I asked her to deduct that from my portion. She said " no problem". We waited another 10 minutes to get our cards and receipts and she didn't split it properly. Very frustrating. When paying $30-50/person, I expect better overall in service and food. Will not come back.

Pretty disappointing all around. They describe themselves as being an upscale venue, but it was pretty lackluster and, quite frankly, a little dusty. It took 25 minutes for our food to arrive when it wasn’t busy. Given the 90 minute time limit they put on your table, the service should be quicker. Service wasn’t incredibly welcoming either, which should be expected when you’re spending $30-$50 a person, which is fine dining prices. Although the tomato bisque soup was divine, the rest was disappointing, mainly because there was very little filling in the sandwiches. The scones were dry and very doughy and I couldn’t eat mine because it was a chore to chew. We did enjoy the music though

I planned a baby shower for 15-20 guests for February, site charged a $215 deposit to book the tables and for “tablecloths”. I requested pink tablecloths, tables were not dressed any differently than other tables. Staff was very helpful on the phone beforehand, but day of event some of the staff was borderline rude. Party was scheduled 11am-1:30 pm, staff opened up after 11 am and had guests enter through a “storage area”. I told staff beforehand that my daughter wanted a cake, which we brought. I was told to “move the cake”, but staff was reluctant to store cake while tea was served. I had to ask for serving plates and utensils. Tea, scones and sandwiches were great , but “desserts” (cookies) and salad were fair. At the end of event, I was told $215 was not a deposit, but actually a fee for use of the room. So total event was over $1200 for 19 people, including their 20% tip. I would have tipped much less based on my guests’ comments about Maya. The 2nd server-busboy was very accommodating.
This could be a great venue, but it needs some TLC in the dining and entry area. Maya needs an attitude adjustment if she’s going to continue as a server. If you schedule a party to start at 11 am, you should be ready for guests at least 10 minutes or so before the scheduled event; or don’t start events until 11:30…

They were very responsive over email and helped me make my reservation. They also accommodated my dietary restrictions - no meat and eggs. Super nice waiter! The food, however, is sub par. I got two types of sandwiches- cucumber mint and berries and cream (pics attached) with were one fourth of a piece of bread with one slice of cucumber and strawberry, respectively . It would be nice if they were a little larger with more filling and covered with another piece of bread. The clotted cream tasted flat and foamy and is definitely not of the right consistency or taste. We also got soup which was better. Being an avid tea drinker - I expect a pure Assam to be much robust than what they had.

Great and unique experience for a tea house.
Each table gets a beautiful tea serving ceramic set.
The menu is tricky as you can order set/tower or build your own one.
The only downside is that if you go with the Royal or other top selection (sandwich, fruit, dessert, scones, etc.), they ask you not to share and have at least $10 order per person.
The atmosphere is great and the food/dessert are super nice and unique.
Great for a morning/brunch date ☺️

I had a very disappointing experience at McKenna’s Tea Cottage. The sandwiches were subpar, but the worst part was my girlfriend's salad, which was literally covered in flies and aphids. When we informed the waiter, they acted like we were inconveniencing them rather than addressing the issue professionally. There was no apology, and it felt like they didn't take the problem seriously at all. Despite the situation, we weren't offered any discount or compensation. We ultimately didn’t feel comfortable eating anything else, but the staff made us feel like we were overreacting. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone—terrible food and even worse service.

Upon arriving 15 early and the 2nd in my party of 3 to arrive, we were asked to wait for the 3rd person before being seated. After 30 min and sitting outside in the sun, we went in to ask if we could be seated. Our 3rd person was walking over from her parking spot. In a very condescending voice I was told when your whole party arrives. I asked could we at least get some water we have been waiting outside and we are thirsty. They came with 2 glasses of water and asked us to sit in the chairs/waiting area until our whole party arrived. 3rd person walked up before I even took a sip and they sat us. I felt the staff was incredibly rude. We were there to spend our money on tea and some food and they wouldn t seat us so we would be more comfortable and maybe have some water. Not impressed and we will not be back. Terrible attitude and that service is not putting your paying customer first and making sure you make them feel welcome to your establishment. Sad part is it was all of our first time and last time going there. I m sorry McKenna. You need better staff. You have a great concept, but you need to know the customer and what their minimum expectations would be, and that s not to mention you had NO quiche at all which is a big part of the menu. I could never stay in business without putting the feeling of value and comfort to my clients. To bad.

We went today, party of five to enjoy Mother s Day weekend. $265 for three adults and two children. Our reservations were at noon and water hit our table at 1 PM. All the food was cold except for the biscuits and scones. The sandwiches that were supposed to be hot, were cold and stiff. You get about half a glass of sparkling cider and if you d like a refill it s extra. It took two full hours for us to get our entire meal. The kids meals came first and almost 40 minutes later the adult tray showed up. The bathrooms smell, the building so badly needs to be refurbished. I want my money back. It was a horrible time. Not even being in good company made up for it. We were all starving.

This is a lovely tea spot! Very affordable and a great outdoor spot for a nice time with friends. The top two tiers on the menu are plentiful for food, especially for the price. I do think the $3.50 fee to pick sandwich types in different quantities is silly, you get 5 either way. Great selections of teas and they even have cocktails.

This used to be my favorite tea establishment pre covid. Coming back after opening I noticed a few slips, dusty interior, service a bit slower and just not as polished and professional but the food and concept were always top notch. Today Im just sad. The food was average. The sandwiches were just not as fresh and the scones werent perfect. Average at best. The service as clearly lacking. We were told to pick a table, so we did. The room was half full. There was a server joking and chatting with a table. It took a good 10 minutes for a different person to appear and the only words were, do you know what you want. Well we certainly did because we had read that menu 20 times! Our order was taken and our tea delivered. The food was brought in a timely manner. That was the last we saw of our server until I chased them down for the bill. We needed more clotted creme. I know, just decadent, but whatever. I got up to look for our server and was watched by a woman making phone calls for the business, she looked up but clearly not her job to help. Finally located the other, read not our server, and she did provide the creme. We finished our tea and food, which again, was ok. I finally tracked our server(?) down outside on the patio and was given the check. Im almost embarrassed to say it but I left a 10% tip, half of my normal. I hope the young person who almost waited on us realizes that it is an indication of the low level of service we received. Im sure they are a lovely person but serious training in the art of service is needed.

Decided to pick this tea house for a surprise party for my mother, but I wish I didnt. Dirty champagne glasses, servers hardly checked on us during our time there, food was not prepared when there was a requested set menu. They gave us a time restriction and when we got close to our time, we were told they were going to charge us an extra $50 for going over our time, even when we didn t have any of our food yet. Rushed and unpleasant experience. A lot of unhappy and unsatisfied guests in our large party. Parking: Very hard place to find a parking spot at or around the area. Expect to make circles around the location for a long time.

The service here is beyond ridiculous. I attended a party here which consisted of 18 people. I have never experienced this type of low quality service from anywhere. First off they couldn t seat us until 1:30 regardless of the table being set up already. They claim they have a 2 hour maximum period to enjoy the tea party. Well, let me tell you none of this experience was enjoyable. After waiting around 45 minutes I had to order something because I was starving. I ordered a salad that came with fruit on it. The chicken was OVERLY salted and just overall very boring considering the price. Secondly, none of our pre-set food was served. They forgot about it, and all of us were sitting there wondering where it was. Not one waiter or waitress stopped by to check on us, asking if we need anything. It comes around to 2:30 and they proceed to tell us that if we go overtime it will be an extra $50! What happened to the 2 hour time limit. When we addressed the situation they said it was their mistake and would not be charged. Well they lied because upon checking the bank statement there was an extra $50 charge. Finally the food came out and it was average. Still no service asking if we were okay, If we needed anything. Not even to have water refilled! Clearly these people are not trained properly nor have the proper customer service skills. When we had to cut the cake they didn t clear any tables, offer any new setting, nor offer a knife, it was utterly ridiculous. Lastly, the chef was sitting outside smoking and complaining. That was not okay and so unprofessional. After going back and fourth with the managers who were extremely rude, they deemed us not fit for any type of accommodation. Overall, do not come here! There are so many other professionally ran places in seal beach.

Horrible service for a large party. They hardly paid attention to us. Charged us overtime for their mistakes about forgetting the pre set menu that was discussed a few times prior to the day. I would never come here again.

If you are thinking of having a big party here, don t! I planned for a party of 18. They hardly paid attention to us for such a large party. They said they won t seat anyone until the whole party was there even though two people were showing up late due to a surprise party. We had a pre set menu and they forgot about it. They put the menus on the table. They said they didn t see the note then checked again and said oh, we see it now. They rushed us the entire time even though they were made aware of the pre set menu prior multiple times. They didn t have anything ready for us. Lastly, they charged us an over time fee for their mistakes. Nothing was done to accommodate us after sharing our disappointment. Plenty of other tea houses to choose from.

They obviously dont know that theres a big difference between Scones and Biscuits. We were served Biscuits, Not Scones! If a Tea place doesnt serve Scones than whats the point? Unfortunately this is where they failed for us and will be why we cannot recommend them. Scones are accentually the biggest part of your experience in a Tea room.

McKenna s Tea Cottage is one of a kind and located in Seal Beach off Main St. It is a long-standing establishment and very highly revered by the locals. Megan and Brooke do a great job of catering towards their diverse clientele and ensuring that you enjoy your experience. Over the years McKenna s Tea Cottage has provided a consistent place to celebrate with love ones. I often go with my mom and/or sisters for a special outing. My favorite choice on the menu is the Lady Hamilton Tea which includes a traditional pot of tea, five assorted tea sandwiches and a scone. They include sugar, milk, jam, and clotted cream with your meal. The most recent time I went the sandwiches included chicken salad, cucumber with cream cheese, turkey wrap, egg salad, and strawberry cream cheese which were all quite tasty. I love that they provide both caffeinated and decaffeinated teas, my favorite is English Breakfast. All their loose-leaf teas are available for purchase inside their shop. I am happy to continue to support McKenna s Tea Cottage especially throughout this pandemic. I hope that they continue in their success and be able to invest back into the cottage so they can thrive within the Seal Beach community.

Some of the items were store bought. In particular the desserts. The cupcakes were from the supermarket, along with the macaroons from Trader Joe s. The tea sandwiches were adequate but not as fresh and delicious as before. I know the pandemic has hindered many of the restaurants operations so I excuse These replacements. We sat outside so it was not as noisey as the back room where there were a few large parties. Several young women in tube tops and short with the older women at another table in hats and heavy perfume. This used to be a quaint tea room. I hope they come back to what they once were.

My daughters had been wanting to go to McKennas Tea Cottage for the longest time. After this last year of doing nothing, when my 9 year old asked if we could go for her birthday recently it was an easy yes. I am so incredibly glad that we did! We had a party of 6 with four little girls and two moms and we all had an excellent time. The girls were over the moon with the Princess Tea set up and all of our food was phenomenal. This sounds silly, but trust me when I say the French bread the sandwich was served on was some of the best French bread I have ever had, the perfect combination of crunchy and soft, it was so good, I could have eaten a loaf of just the bread. The cupcake was SO good, put the birthday cake we had at home to shame. Megan our server was excellent! She made great recommendations, including the Hazelnut and Vanilla tea, which we both thought was delicious. She was very attentive, but never annoying about it, and made the experience even better! We definitely wont wait for a special occasion to go back! Highly recommend!

My sister and I happened to walk by this place and knew we had to try it! The host was very friendly and got us seated as soon as possible and the tea is amazing!! My sister and I were enchanted by this place and the scones are delicious! They came out warm and fresh out of the oven and so authentic! We will definitely be back!!!

Service was excellent, the tea was dreamy, the pastries were EXQUISITE, and they even had candies that looks like they came out of the 50s/60s that were so cute. It is like a mini European tea shop. Perfect for dates and romantic dinners. With porcelain tea cups and nice music, to wonderful welcoming people and workers, I could go on, highly recommend for people who love Europe, tea, pastries, etc!

Update! June 20, 2020. Open for DINE-IN. Call ahead for reservations! New photos added. It was a nice afternoon tea with my friend. The establishment has been around for a while. The locals love having tea parties here. There was a party for a little girl with her friends to celebrate her birthday. It was really cute. I really love the decor and displays of tea sets, my weakness. Lol. Anyways, I would definitely return to enjoy another set of tea. If you like this review, please let me know. Thank you and have a great day!

I am so happy I used McKenna s for my sisters virtual baby shower. The food was delicious and looked beautiful. Kristen did an amazing job and went above and beyond to make my sisters baby shower special. McKennas delivered food to everyone and even went to Chino Hills and Torrance. They also delivered the party favors I dropped off with the food boxes. I highly recommend using McKennas for your special events.

The tea wasnt anything special. The sandwiches were not good. Stale bread is not cool. When there is so little offered everything counts that much more. Dirty tea cups were yuck.

The tea itself was good, the sandwiches bland, and service was ok. I bought a groupon for a friend and I to go enjoy a pot of tea and some food. Groupons can only be used if you make a reservation. We arrived and were seated fairly quickly since there was a party before us. We were placed in a separate room from the other parties. We were given the run down on the menu and left alone for about 10-15 minutes. We ordered our tea and was left alone again. The tea and the rest of the Lady Hamilton tea set arrived at about the same time. The scones were delicious. The sandwiches as I said were lacking a bit of flavor. they were cut a bit small, but that may be because it was a sampler of 4 sandwiches per person. Unfortunately my tea cup was dirty when I turned it over to pour myself tea. They did replace it quickly, and I was grateful, but I am left wondering why a dirty cup had even been left out to be used. My companion ordered the pomegranate rasberry tea and did not think the flavor was strong enough. It was overall a pleasant experience. I however didnt like that the groupon doesnt cover everything like expected, I had this presumption that it would cover the entire cost of the service I chose, that is not the case and you will be paying the tax on site. This is probably to give people a chance to tip but I still thought it odd. The staff was friendly, of the two people we saw, but being in a separate area made me feel a tad isolated and I am not sure if I was pleased or slighted.

This is a sweet little tea room, very kid friendly, very people friendly. The sandwiches were excellent. The tea and scones were perfect. Also, when I went, the place was packed, but it was still quiet enough to talk which is unusual and lovely. There were plenty of flavors of tea to choose from. The service was a little slow, but they were very busy and we never felt rushed to order or leave when we were finished. We got exactly what we ordered and it was all delicious.

Bought my groupon deal to be here. A cute little house cotton to drink tea like the English. There re hats for prop to take picture with. You have to do reservation.

Not my style of teahouse, pre steeped in the back, and the finger sandwiches are a bit small. But to each their own.

Friendly host, great selection of teas and desserts. Everything made in house (tea blends, scones, fruit preserves, etc). Super relaxing and well priced. Now that the Queen Mary doesnt have afternoon tea service, McKennas is definitely the place to go for a perfect afternoon tea.

Very nice tea. One of those magical places that is like a magical tent - larger inside than what it appears outside! Great scones!!!

McKennas Tea Cottage is a cozy spot to enjoy a good cup of tea along with delicious tea sandwiches, scones, desserts, and more. Located in Old Town Seal Beach, the decor is English and quaint. Teacups, saucers, pots, and lace surround you. There are over 35 teas to enjoy, and they offer a unique blend of their own which is very lovely. They also host events and can accommodate private parties. If you see an event posted, dont hesitate to make your reservation as it likely will sell out. It is the perfect spot for lunch and afternoon tea! And afterward, stroll to the beach and have fun shopping at the lovely shops.

Its a fun experience! Lots of choices for Tea. The quiche was very good as were the scones and clotted cream. The finger sandwiches however were very skimpy. The filling was almost non-existent! We were there for a birthday celebration and some guests had the High Tea. The Queen Mum Tea is not worth the price. Stick to soup, salad and quiche.

Great little place. Great service, great food, AMAZING tea! I dont understand the 18% gratuity on partys that have more than 3 people but that actually saved money since Im a generous tipper when Im not being forced to tip. Will come here again!
