PRO TIP: Don't sit at the back. There's constant traffic of people going in and out of the bathroom. Also, they like to slam shut their side door with a lot force so be sure to cover your ears.

Surprisingly not that busy during mother's day brunch. Food was good and the service was terrible. Our waitress check up on us once, then ghosted us for the whole time there. It took us forever to get some refill for our coffees. Honestly we missed our chance for a free brunch because we could've just easily walked out and no one wouldve noticed.

Update 10/30/2024
It's aight.

There is nothing extraordinary about John's place. The food is typical American, with lots of carbs and no flavor. The coffee is okay, but nothing outstanding. The waitress was a little pushy to keep tables moving, although the place was empty. I do not recommend Johns.

Had a lunch meal with two other people. The restaurant was not busy - about 1/3 filled and they ran out of menus. The bellinis were ok. However, the fish tacos were small, greasy, and bland. The Greek salads had lots of lettuce but not much else. Expensive and mediocre. The service was good. The atmosphere I cannot rate as we had lunch outside and no one else was outside. My advice is to avoid. Maybe the other items are better. Pricey and not worth it. Look elsewhere.

We went for brunch and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! There’s indoor and outdoor seating; we opted for indoor. Definitely get the margarita slushies! We got the brisket poblano hash and the breakfast burrito add brisket and enjoyed them both! The owner was there and checking in on tables, and the walls are covered in local artists’ work for sale which is a nice touch that we enjoy seeing at restaurants.

We have dined at John's Place many times and thoroughly enjoyed it. This review refers to their catering. We recently chose John's Place to cater our event and the food was delicious! Often, I find event catering doesn't hold up while sitting out or is overly fussy and difficult to eat. I also find many caterers push quantities that are way above what is really needed. John created a menu that tasted just as delicious when it arrived as it did when the last guest departed. Everything was easy to eat and did not drip sauce on people's clothing or spill little bits onto the floor. John helped me to order the right amount of food. We did not run out but we didn't over order, either. I highly recommend John's Place for catering.

This place served up some seriously tasty food! Ambiance is unassuming but the food was sneakily elevated. First visit today and had the harvest salad. Everything was roasted and seasoned perfectly. There was not a single ingredient in that salad that was not delicious or that I would have substituted. Great job to whomever created that dish.

Fries were soggy when specifically asked for well done. Cheese curds were just ok.
Didn’t get half my order and said it was Grubhub but since they decided to use Grubhub, they should make it right or use a different service.
Chicago cheesesteak was good…that’s the only thing that was good.

Back when I lived in Roscoe Village/The City, John's Place was my favorite place to grab a delicious meal. I see they've added to the menu but still have my favorite dish (the Peanut Chicken Bowl... I'm drooling just thinking about it and I probably haven't had it in 9 years!!! I must rectify that stat!!! The Cowboy Burger is also pretty good. I nearly forgot about their Cheese Curds Too!!!

The food itself gets a zero star. Thats preety hard to do, bit this place did it. It's absolutely disgusting. I had the chicken sandwich which was cheap. You know when you taste a lesser quality food item because the ingredients are so cheap, that's what it taste like. So you might as well go to Wendy's and get a better taste than chicken sandwich. The macaroni and cheese tasted more like the noodles than the cheese. And the cheese curds which didn't taste good. You taste the batter but not the cheese

Review №70

Food is great, atmosphere is good but customer service is hit or miss. We had a great first experience with a younger woman.

However, we have since called twice to place pick up orders and the person taking the call both times had poor customer service. They told us they didn’t have gluten free bread even though we had been the week before and did. When they went to check they stood corrected but no apology was there after making us feel silly for thinking they had it. Then we called again and tried to order something that they said wasn’t on the menu for a long time even though it was currently on the listed Google menu. No apology for the miscommunication which is on the restaurant to not correct the Google menu. It would be nice for the restaurant to have someone kind and pleasant to speak to customers.

Review №74

Homey food. Satisfying. Great family place.

They have a good variety on their menu without being overwhelming.

We started our meal with cheese curds.
The burger deserves the accolade it has really tasty — the jam created a perfect contrast to the richness of the meat. We were already home and I still kept on thinking of that jam LOL.

I ordered the torta el pollo — it’s not a traditional torta they used a brioche, the chicken breast was not that dry and I liked the accoutrement. They have at least 5 different choices for the kids menu; most places will just throw one or two as an afterthought. My daughter enjoyed her mac n cheese and burger.

We ended our meal with their silly good homemade doughnuts. Not too sweet and perfectly crunchy on the outside but soft and pillowy on the inside.

I’m sure we’ll be back. Oh by the way, the owner John is one conscientious restauranteur. I appreciate the thought in their work. It shows.

Covid note: Everyone was wearing masks, doors and windows were open and seating was spaced. Clear mask 😷 instructions were given to patrons.

Small bar, but they had a nice variety of local beers.
I had the shepherd's pie that was quite tasty. It came with toasted parmesan bread. Yummy, but not sure how it fits with shepherd's pie. A very large portion (could be for two). Everyone else enjoyed their meal and all the sweet potato fries were gone, so I am surmising they were good. Salmon looked delicious. A must try stop if you are in Roscoe

Support them during the pandemic, but DO NOT order delivery from their website. They use Chow Now, which fraudulently makes you think they are the delivery company-- you are paying a marketing company, who pays a delivery company - Door Dash. We deleted Door Dash from our phones because the food has always been cold and late (40 minutes late tonight-- and 4 phone calls later we figure out what happened). Support John's Place and pick up the food yourself!

My my my l, well thanks John and by the way I love your quaint but bold patio'd haven. Your place does the body good and the community reminds me of Cheers. Happy locals just dropping by to get the regular and eager to try anything that strays from the traditional menu. Great for family, great for staples. Truly a 4.7. BUT, and this is important - the pancakes which were recommended were a tad over cooked meaning the coloring was starting to look like a dark bark on the outer perimeter of those fluffy slapjacks. Tweak that, and you get a true 5-stars!
