Mi Tocaya has been on my list for a long time, and I can't believe I waited this long. Homey and lively ambience and one of the best meals I've had in Chicago in a while. For the affordable price and the exceptional experience, I would highly recommend this to anyone.
Everything we got was either really good or great, but the steak burrito was the consensus star of the show for our table - probably one of the best burritos I've ever had. If you are contemplating getting it, GET IT, you won't regret it.
The chicken, fish, and octopus all were excellent as well. For dessert, we got the Tres Leches cake and it had a perfect texture and balance of flavors.
Between 4 of us we enjoyed everything we drank from a wide selection of cocktails and mocktails, you can't go wrong with the beverage menu.
Will be coming back soon!

An obvious favorite. Clean, inventive, fresh dishes made to share. Staff is inviting and a comfortable atmosphere. Come during the summer for their pitcher margarita 🤟
Edit:
Going to have to amend my review because upon returning I got pretty bad food poisoning from the steak burrito. Nobody else at the table of 6 got sick except me and my sister who split the burrito. I don’t know what happened there, maybe the meat was old or something but bad quality control. The octopus was grilled to oblivion, with a genuinely disgusting level of burnt charcoal flavor. It was inedible and needed to be sent back. They started charging for 6 bucks for salsa for chips. Additionally they keep raising prices yet got rid of fan favorite items that didn’t make enough money such as the pitcher of Margarita. Although it may not make them the maximum amount of money as selling individual cups, it was a unique and fun item and helped this place stand out. I used to drive 40 minutes for this place however it is disappointing i probably won’t be returning.

I've been here 3 times now. First was a cocktail hour. Vibes were good. Second was dinner. It was a bit challenging to find good options to accommodate dietary restrictions (dairy/gluten/spice) but we found something and honestly, it was pretty delicious and had unique flavors.
Third time was not the charm.
The food was the worst part, it was a different menu I think and felt much harder to find a couple of dishes to share. Wanted to get the big pork and another couple of dishes for us to share. I was warned that 2 the pork and one of the dishes had to be spicy (and pretty spicy) and the other one had to be cooked with gluten.
It was a bit downhill from here; we adjusted to 2 other plates to not share (sad), the fish and the cheesy goat tacos. I can only speak to the fish but wow did it suck. I think my expectations were high for flavor from the prior visit, but I didn't expect it to be this bad. The fish was flavorless, it came with 3 small slices of zucchini, 2 small slices of potato, and an overly spicy mole sauce. Basically just a few bites, a little appetizer of a main course for 30-something bucks. Lesson learned; hit or miss, and to me, not worth trying again.
Service was fine, not the best but no complaints for a restaurant that isn't fine dining and doesn't yet have itself together.
Atmosphere inside was pretty uncomfortable. Music was too loud and making everyone have to talk louder. It wasn't terrible but, just not something I'd willingly put myself through for mediocre food.
Overall, an over priced ($105 w 20% tip for 2 entrées + 2 drinks) mediocre dining experience with extremely disappointing food. I plan on actively avoiding it in the future.

We came to this restaurant to celebrate a date night for my husband's birthday. Food: After hearing great reviews about this spot, we felt that the food was just okay. The presentation leaves you with a great desire for more flavor. Pulpo seemed to be missing a spark, it is served with a spicy bruchetta like sauce, the burrito for $26 did not make a creative taste impression. The ambience is pleasant except if you are seated in front of the food's warming lamp, unluckily that's were they sat us. Service was friendly and polite. Having so many great choices nearby, we feel this place needed to offer a bit more for the popularity and price.

Food was decent and well prepared but our experience detracted from it. We had a reservation at 830, got there at 8:25, didn’t get seated until 8:45. It was a cold fall evening, and the door was propped completely open, so we stood freezing in the doorway for 20 minutes. My girlfriend was agonizing. When we sat, we didn’t have a menu for 10 minutes until the waiter came but and realized. Everyone was very nice, just executed poorly. The waiter was very busy it seemed like. Sadly the long, cold wait in the doorway was the thing that kind of ruined the experience, coupled with the lack of attention in terms of service.

We went for my sons birthday and the service and host were fabulous. They were sweet enough to get a candle for the tres leches cake slice we ordered for dessert. The cake was delicious. We ordered Aguachile for appetizer and it was scrumptious. But that was all I liked in our meal. My kids got the Steak Burrito which they liked. I got Heritage Pollo con Mole Poblano. The chicken was perfectly roasted but I personally did not like the mole sauce. I just found the dish to be very bland. Also get the half order. The portion size is huge. Overall I did not feel our meal lived up to my high expectations.

We wanted to try one of the most talked about Mexican Restaurants in Chicagoland. The hype was hi and the reviews very confidence inspiring. Unfortunately, it did not lived up to the hype. For starters, it was impossible to get a good table without a reservation. We were offered a high table, and the chairs were most likely made in hell, as these were some of the most uncomfortable chairs I have sat on. My wife being skeptical, ordered the burrito. Me, being the adventurous type, ordered the Shank a La Cochinita Pibil. Things started to go south, when my wife's dish was brought out, and mine was nowhere to be found. Immediately she jumped right in. Her first impression, although flavourful, it was salty beyond normal enjoyment. Since I didn't have a dish yet, she, in an act of solidarity, stopped eating so I wouldn't have to eat alone. Some 10 to 15 minutes later my dish came out. To my surprise, the dish was not even hot, it was room temperature at best, which begs the question, why then did I have to wait that long? Now, I've had the opportunity to travel the world, and I've eaten some very spicy food; i.e., Korean, Thai, Chinese. For some unknown reason, even though the plate was flavourful, the spice was sufficient to make the experience quite uncomfortable. The part that I don't understand is, if the dish is supposed to be that hot, why wasn't that brought up when I ordered? All in all, we were really looking forward to the evening and the experience. Unfortunately, the place did not live up to the hype, at least not this time around. Would we return? Maybe, but we certainly need to give this one time, enough to see if we can forget a not so great experience.

Update to review:
Had horrible food poisoning from the steak burrito that caused extreme sickness. I should have read reviews before going because other people have complained of food poisoning from this establishment. I do not recommend.
Beautiful atmosphere with very over priced food. The food was all spicy and salty. Portions were small and the menu was hard to understand. The guacamole was the best.

Excellent food and service. I had the scallop ceviche and blue crab quesadilla. Both were amazing. Be sure to order their Tres Leches for dessert.

This restaurant serves very creative and delicious Mexican food off a thoughtful menu. The sauces are flavorful with varying levels of heat. The tortillas were finely made, thin and tasty. We particularly liked the octopus and the steak burrito. The portions were not overly large but adequate with great quality for sharing. The wine list was unique but the sangria was quite sweet. The location is a surprise gem on Logan Boulevard.

Tried Mi Tocaya Antojeria since it's part of the American Express Dining Experience in Chicago. So it's recommended and I wanted to check it out on a Saturday night.
Spend a birthday there, but unfortunately there was no surprise for the birthday girl- another patron got a piece of cake, we did not- even if i mentioned that in the reservation. The food was delicious and very special, it's not compareable to any mexican food i had before. It was really good, fresh ingridients and served in different steps, it was a real experience- a good one. If you're looking for authentic mexican food which is not Tex-Mex, this is the place to go.
The service wasn't so good compared to the food- the bus boy didn't bother to clean our tables and even when our table broke (after we had dinner) he was like "oh yeah, that's a problem- just be cautios now". The waiter was nice, the waitress seemed very stressed out.
Overall I personally would not visit this place again and by paying over 200$ for 3 people i was a bit underwhelmed with that experience.

I've been trying to eat here the last 4 times I've visited Chicago, and I'm glad I finally got a reservation.
To start, I received hands down the best spicy margarita I've had. They start with fresh squeezed lime juice, a bit of agave nectar for sweetness, and one hundred percent agave Blanco Serrano infused tequila.
The guacamole is also carefully made in house, with a hint of Serrano peppers - just enough to make your tongue dance a bit.
I ordered the quesabirria - a dish I've only ever had on tacos. It was presented in a bowl, topped with cilantro and onions, with fresh corn tortillas kept warm by a cloth napkin, and broth on the side.
The cheese on top was cooked to a consistency similar to a soul food Mac and cheese - hard, but not crispy. The goat meat underneath was slow cooked to perfection - tender, juicy, and full of flavor. Paired with the creamy cheese on the bottom, this was the perfect filling for the corn tortillas.
The service was great - Yadi helped guide me through the menu (and even talked me into house baked Flan for dessert)! I truly can't recommend this place enough.

There’s a lot of thoughtful things to say about the way Mi Tocaya highlights lesser known Aztec cuisine and more indigenous flavors & ingredient preparations into the modern culinary scene, but honestly the main thought that stays with you when you leave here is just that the food tastes incredibly good
Each dish is bigger than the sum of its parts, with complex layers of flavor blending into uniquely delicious plates. The romanesco is a standout dish - the gooseberry sikil pak is like nothing I’ve had before, and I was scraping the sauce off the plate to eat by the spoonful long after the (perfectly cooked) romanesco was gone. The picada stuns as well, a salty and smoky bite across the mussels and roe balanced by the creamy bean whip. It’s hard to not feel a bit guilty about paying for chips and salsa, but the salsa casera is worth the price of entry
Dessert doesn’t disappoint either - Kristoffer’s tres leches is prob the most renowned in the city, and while I could personally do without the chocolate, the cake’s texture and sweetness level are spot on. The tres leches tends to pull focus, but the flan de queso is tasty and a departure from the classic flan - a slightly more savory slant with perfectly creamy texture

Mi Tocaya is an absolute gem nestled in Logan Square, where every visit feels like a culinary adventure through vibrant Mexican flavors. From the moment you step inside (or out on the patio if the weather is nice), the atmosphere is warm and inviting, setting the stage for an unforgettable dining experience.
Each dish is nothing short of a masterpiece. Flavors are authentic yet creative with a focus on locally sourced ingredients. My favorites are the guacamole with chile ash, shrimp aguachile, sikil pak and goat birria. The rotating menu means there's always something new to try, but there are some staple items that you can count on always being available, like the steak burrito.
Reservations are recommended especially on weekends. Easy street parking nearby.

Great service and vibe but mostly let down by the steak burrito. I have been here several times throughout the last 3 years and always remembered the steak burrito as the best one in Chicago. I was excited to have it again however, it was a major let down. The old burrito had thick cuts of steak cooked medium but now has super tiny chopped cuts of steak that are super cooked through and covered in a bunch of seasonings. I loved the old burrito for the pure steak flavor however this new burrito tasted like something I can get at any other Mexican restaurant for half the price. I also wasn’t a fan of the caramelized onions, they added a sweetness to the burrito that didn’t need to be there. I would pay $27 for the old burrito but not the one I had yesterday :(

You'll need a reservation to visit this popular Logan Square restaurant which is perfect for a casual night out with friends for upscale Mexican food that has its roots in traditional dishes. There's comfortable patio seating if weather permits.
Affordable wines, extensive list of mescals, and interesting cocktails. The non-alcoholic Tepache Colada is noteworthy (read the description on the drinks menu and you'll want to try one). The Guacamole has the right amount of fire to waken the tastebuds. There are so many good things on the menu, but our favorites were the chicken thighs and the goat. Also try the Frijoles Negros Fritos (flavorful black beans) that takes two days to prepare and is hands down the best we ever had. Even if you're stuffed, share the flan and tres leches for a bit of sweetness to end the meal.
The service is exemplary and kudos to the waitstaff (Rachel was our server) who are knowledgeable and dedicated to enhancing your experience. We went with our friend who is from Mexico City and difficult to please having dined at some of Mexico's Michelin-starred restaurants and was so complimentary that our server brought the Chef/Owner, Diana Davila, to our table. Diana is not just an excellent chef, but very approachable and community/family minded. Be aware that the check will have a charge for server healthcare which we whole-heartedly support.

This is my favorite restaurant in Chicago. I’ve been coming here for years now and I have never left without feeling I just had one of the best meals of my life. I love the neighborhood feel, almost reminding me of eating in a restaurant in Mexico City. The menu is regularly updated with new flavors and authentic Mexican food. The drinks here are also really good and the service is consistently great. I can’t recommend this restaurant enough. Do yourself a favor and eat here.

I was able to grab a bar seat on a Friday night allowing me to get a front row seat in watching the chefs cook. I ended up getting the steak burrito. This thing was massive, half of it filled with steak. Would have preferred the steak to be medium rare, but it was good nonetheless. I thought there was a good balance of textures within but would have liked a little more banana peppers, cheese, and sour cream as I couldn’t really taste them. Finally, the tortilla had a nice char on it from the grill top and the salsa was flavorful. Nice atmosphere with a lot of color, but a little expensive.

The waitress made the evening great, but the food and hostess made the memory.... eh.
We were early and this establishment is so small, there was barely anywhere to stand. The bar only had two chairs available and there were three of us. The hostess was very cold towards us from the get go and informed us we couldn't sit there and have one person stand. Shortly after this, several employees stood in the same spot chatting for 15min. The space is not optimized for its use- more chairs could be added to the bar and the high top tables are a huge waste of space. We stood by the door for over 40 min.
The design was beautiful and fun all the way from the tables to the bathroom! Love love!
I ordered the swordfish. The dish was oily- we order tortillas to cut it. I wasn't a huge fan of it. Wish we would have ordered family style.
The drinks were good :)

We had a mixed experience at Mi Tocaya. We were looking forward to our dinner, which started off well with a robust, tangy salsa & chips, and inventive cocktails. Our server was friendly. But throughout the meal, he & other staff came by so many times, it became disruptive. I think he came back 5 or 6 times to check on us. It was excessive. Then, the hostess, server, and busboy came at intervals to ask to take our plates away (and we had to tell three separate people "no, we're still eating," which is so awkward); it felt very unwelcoming and rushed! When you make a reservation, you're given a suggested time limit for your meal. We were well under that time limit and were not lingering, but they must have needed our table really badly or something. (We didn't notice them doing this to the people sitting next to us. Maybe the two-tops were in demand?) The food was good -- no question -- the romanesco en sikil pak was the standout. The spaghetti squash elote style is tasty & buttery, but could be more balanced (too rich, we both thought). The pescado en mole blanco would have been amazing, but the fish was overdone. Afterward, our family members asked us if they should check out Mi Tocaya and we told them, nope, this is one you can skip. Note to other out-of-towners: there's also a 3% charge added to pay for employees' health insurance.

I'm getting better at these snappy lines.
Anyway, I got the steak burrito and it was one of the best I've ever had. One of those situations where I ate it before I remembered to take a picture.
Also got some horchata and it was pretty tasty and came in a cute little mug that made me feel fancy.
Service was great, but id encourage you to get those reservations early cause it's a small space with amazing food.

I came here with my wife after seeing great reviews for this place, but wouldn't go back.
Food: We enjoyed the cactus tacos and birria tacos, but we didn't get enough tortillas and we're charged extra for more. The cauliflower dish was well presented but we found it to be undercooked. Our cocktails were on point and probably the best part of our meal.
Service: We waited a good 20 minutes from the time we sat down to when we got our drinks. Our server was nice but he seemed to have a lot of tables to tend to. Also our table was sticky, so it was a little distracting when moving around our plates and glasses.
All in all, it wasn't a terrible meal, but I think there are lots of other restaurants in the area that deliver better quality, service, and value.

Hubby and I came here for our anniversary and we had a good time. The service was good, sometimes felt a bit slow but nothing too crazy. The food was phenomenal. We ordered the tétela and the mole was nice and spicy. We then ordered the diy quesibirria which was surprisingly really delicious. Goat has a certain aftertaste and this one didn’t have it. We also ordered the carne en su jugo and the meat was delicious, lots of flavor. However when you ate the broth with the bacon it made it taste salty. On its own the broth held up really well but once mixed with the bacon bits it just made the whole dish borderline salty, for me it made it less palatable.
The restaurant is also on the small side but you can still have a nice conversation with whoever you come with. We would definitely recommend it and come back on a different ocasion.

A perfect date night spot in Logan Square, especially in nice weather. It can be a cozy wait, but the servers are fairly accurate about wait times, and I actually saw them accomate a family with a young boy so that they didn't have to sit too close to the door since it was too drafty. It was really nice to see, and it really contributed to the pleasant atmosphere.
It's also the best steak burrito I've ever had in my life and some really unique guacamole, and really good mocktails.

Probably the best Mexican food I've ever had just wish they had more comfortable chairs. You will not regret coming here. Highly recommended. 🔥

Would rcommend the DIY Quesabirria, Setas con Mole Rojo, and Heirloom Tetela! And get the Chicana cocktail - not too sweet or smoky, with a thick foam!
The Aguachile was good but I prefer a milkier leche de tigre. Definitely reserve ahead of time as place is small.

We love Mi Tocaya. My daughter lives in Logan Square, so anytime we visit, we always make an attempt to get here. I'm actually jealous that my daughter can go here so often. The food is absolutely phenomenal. The staff is exceptional as well as very knowledgeable. I can't recommend it enough. The aquachile changes frequently and is always delicious. We were lucky on our recent visit that the birria was on the menu. The cocktails are also top-notch. It's pretty small, so reservations are a must. Cocktails are wonderful as well.

Birria was our favorite of the dishes we tried! The hand made tortillas were delicious too

The fact that this restaurant charges for chips and salsa when everything on its menu is around $25 and the waitress suggested 6-8 items for 4 people shows how out of touch the menu writer is for Mi Tocayo. $26 burrito. It’s like a $5 lump of coal. No lump of coal is worth $5, and no steak burrito is worth $26. The butternut squash “elote” was an assault on the word corn and elote. The aquachile was fantastic and the horchata was wonderful. The atmosphere is incredibly vibrant and welcoming. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the food and gave recommendations on cocktails for the table that went over well! I would recommend somewhere else.

Really delicious regional Mexican food and vegetarian options. A small place so you need to book in advance.

Cute little spot with incredible food and great local vibe. The menu is seasonal but there are several staples that are amazing. I always get the costra taco con nopalitos which is like an inside out quesadilla that is super crispy and flavorful. Also, the guacamole is spiced with chile ash which gives a super unique and delicious salty flavor—probably my all time favorite guac. This time I went, I had the market fish which was Mahi Mahi and it was very flavorful and saucy. Last season, I had mini enchiladas with a pea puree dip which was incredible, so I’d look out for when they have this again.
One thing to note is that it’s a small place with about ten tables, so it’s almost impossible to get a walk-in, even right when they open. I typically need to make a reservation a week in advance to get a table.
Overall, I love this spot and would highly recommend as a neighborhood gem.

Great food, cozy atmosphere, and attentive staff. Our server, Jonah, provided excellent wine and food recommendations. I'd suggest the chips & salsa, Frijoles Negros Fritos, DIY QuesaBirria, and Kristoffer's Tres Leches.

I've been to Mi Tocaya a few times and it's always a phenomenal meal, the drinks are always great too. Best when you can share a bunch of plates with others to try more of the menu. The salsa is always really good and the frijoles as well. Big fan of the quesabirria when they have it on the menu, and a decent selection of items if you're vegetarian.

First off, when arriving for the reservation, the host was very kind and warm. They took a drink order as we waited, which I took as a proactive gesture. We ordered: Heirloom Tetela, Costra Taco con Nopalitos, Caderas de Pollo Tatemadas, Setas con Mole Rojo, Flan de Queso and tres leches. Everything was spectacular! Our server was extremely, engaging and kind, which made our experience very playful, and they was great at walking us through the dishes. (I wish I remembered their name, but they were tall, red haired, with glasses). The place is a little tight squeeze, but very cozy and fun.

This place is my new favorite restaurant in Chicago ! Been wanting to try this place for the longest , so glad I finally did! All the food ,drinks and desert was delicious . The only problem is the place is a little small and they need to expand to the south side ! Highly recommend this place 5 stars ✨

What a gem of a place! Everything is delicious, reminecent of Mexican food you know and love incorporated into intricate, well thought out, absolutely bomb food. Come try! The interior is beautiful and colorful with bright handprints murals!

This place is INCREDIBLE! If you’re looking for a thoughtful/creative place, this is. First, attention is overwhelming (in a good way!), they make you feel at home, servers know their thing and are knowledgeable about drinks/food composition, and Diana Alvarez, the chef herself, brings some plates and explains their concept. Second, drinks are incredibly balanced and tasty. Finally, food has lots of taste and is beautiful. Overall, it is a tremendous yet small but exciting place. Come over, please!

This used to be great food up until they changed the menu. We tried almost everything in the menu and every dish except the guac was a great disappointment. Undercooked for the most part and it doesn't even taste authentic.

I found this restaurant from a magazine, and they definitely hyped up the steak burrito.
I read the reviews and I was excited to try it, even though the burrito was $27 and that’s pretty steep for a burrito.
To my dismay It was sooooo disappointing, it was good but subpar and way too much for $27!
Not worth it at all!!!!!!!! Save yourself a couple of bucks and go to any Mexican restaurants who sell burritos.

Tiny little restaurant in Logan square neighborhood. Was a hot day, probably high 80s inside the restaurant. Food was excellent. Beware, market fish is just salmon. We completed our meal and the check was sent out, they forgot one of our entrees (1 hour after initially ordering ) the server "checks with the back" and says "we have to take it to go"
Poor service for an otherwise tasty place , left a bad taste in our mouth with poor management and customer service .

Great food and a fun restaurant. We really liked the Tacos Arabe de Pollo. Pescado al Mojo de Ajo, Albondigas de Marisco, and Aguachule were also great. Colorful interior for fun date-spot vibes. Was fun to see the cooks cooking right from the dining room. Great drinks, too. Will definitely be back!

Nice Mexican styled food with modern American influences. Small plates, plate share encouraged. Good selection of tequila and Mezcal (costly shots so tread carefully).

Best Mexican restaurant in Chicago, small menu but everything that we tried was excellent, refreshing and authentic at the same (steak burrito, spaghetti squash elote, tacos arabes and Huarache), drinks were tasty too, can't wait to come back and try the rest of the menu.

One of my fav restaurants from my Chicago trip. Not your typical Mexican restaurant. Their dishes are packed with flavour and unique ingredients. We tried the aguachile, birria tacos, as snail dish that I don’t remember the name of and the flan. I must also mention how beautiful their plating is. Slightly pricey but worth it.

I haven't been as excited to visit a new restaurant in years and I've been looking for a more upscale Mexican spot to take clients. The tacos were very impressive to look at and pretty tasty. The shock and disappointment came with the Chamorro de Puerco en Mole- braised pork shank. I planned on ordering it as soon as I read about it. The waitress (freakishly loud talker- I put my airpods in on Noise Cancellation and she was still completely audible) quickly suggested the braised pork even before we ordered. Now I know why. The mole sauce was delicious, among the better mole I've had in Chicago. Unfortunately it was covering a pork shank that had been cooked at least 1 and probably 2 or more days previously. The meat was extremely tough and dry-exactly the opposite of what braised pork shank should be. Worse, the meat was dull gray- disgusting and disappointing. Our party of three each took a bite and agreed it had the texture of jerky. I am angry because there is clearly an accountant in the kitchen who opted not to throw out this tired piece of meat ($2-3?) and instead pawn it off on the unsuspecting. I was deprived of a superior dining experience but the more I think about it, I was robbed of $32. I hope they take this off the menu and stick to art school tacos.

I felt like I was honestly transported to somewhere in Mexico, for better and worse. The decor is very local artsy: painted tables, paintings on the walls, etc. But, the tables felt sticky (apparently because of the paint they used) and there was NO airflow. It was mid 80's outside, with only their small front door open... So, when were finished our meals, we felt a bit like those sticky tables.
But I digress. Onto the food portion!! This is the first time I've had authentic Mexican food and literally felt the love (in Chicago, anyway). Their tortillas are fresh pressed, their Mezcal mole was indescribably good, and my fish had the crispiest skin, while the rest basically melted in my mouth.
I will say, however, I wish that there were non-dairy options for appetizers and at least the option to make 1 or 2 main dishes that way. I felt pretty left out when my partner and cousin split the appetizer and their 2 dishes. It's because of this that I couldn't get the tapas style experience that this restaurant is known for. I'd love to go back if this does change!

Yo there is so much flavor packed into these dishes idk where to begin, very cool how there is a personal story from the chef for all the dishes, there are 1-2 vegan options currently on the menu and it’s easily the most delicious vegan dish I’ve ever tried, if you’re a meat eater the steak burrito is a *must*
