Update 12/2025 - place is still the same and the food is on point.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Joy Yee Pan Asian Restaurant during my first-ever visit to Chinatown Chicago. Being one of the top-rated restaurants in the area, my expectations were high, and I must say, the experience was quite a delightful culinary journey.Upon entering the restaurant, the bustling atmosphere and vibrant decor immediately set the tone for an exciting dining experience. Eager to explore the much-talked-about menu, my companions and I decided to try a variety of dishes that reflected the diverse offerings of Pan Asian cuisine. To start, we indulged in the Crab Rangoon, a delightful appetizer that was a perfect blend of creamy and crispy textures. The flavors of the crab and cream cheese filling were well-balanced, making it a great way to kick off our meal.Moving on to the main course, we sampled an array of dishes that showcased the restaurant's versatility. The Sesame Chicken boasted a tantalizing combination of flavors, with the nutty sesame undertones enhancing the succulent chicken pieces. The Korean Beef, a dish I was particularly excited to try, didn't disappoint. The rich marinade and tender beef slices were a true testament to the restaurant's commitment to authentic flavors. The Shrimp Fried Rice, a classic favorite, was executed to perfection. Each bite was a medley of flavors, the shrimp adding a delightful seafood twist to the dish. Additionally, the Wontons were a hit among us, with their flavorful filling and delicate wrappers. On the whole, the taste and quality of the dishes were impressive and aligned with the restaurant's reputation. The service, for the most part, was attentive and prompt, adding to the overall positive experience. However, one aspect that left a slight dent in an otherwise wonderful dining experience was the server's communication. It seemed that they struggled to fully comprehend our requests, leading to some minor mix-ups and confusion. This minor hiccup did have a mildly irritating impact, but fortunately, it didn't overshadow the fantastic flavors we encountered. In conclusion, my visit to Joy Yee Pan Asian Restaurant was a memorable one, marked by a variety of delectable dishes that truly showcased the essence of Pan Asian cuisine. While the occasional communication issue with the server was a small drawback, it wasn't enough to overshadow the outstanding food and overall service. If you're seeking a diverse culinary adventure in the heart of Chinatown Chicago, Joy Yee Pan Asian Restaurant is certainly worth a visit.

Don't base your order from the pictures they provide. Does not look anything like the examples nor does it include everything advertised. The food was okay. Nothing special nor flavorful. Would not give it above a 3 star. Only food item that was tasty was the bone marrow soup. The servings for the other food options were large but thats because its mainly noodles. The noodles were over cooked as well so it was difficult to eat.

If you’re looking for mediocre Asian food with no flavor, this is the place to go. My party ordered all different dishes and they were all “ok” at best. One dish had to be sent back for a rancid taste in the chicken. The pad Thai was below par for an Asian restaurant, and I expected much much better. The restroom was also in miserable condition, again, not on par for what you’d expect out of a restaurant like this.

This review is strictly on their boba drink. I’m notorious when it comes to not wasting food, but after three sips of their taro boba milk tea I had to toss it. It was the worst boba I’ve had my entire life.. My gf said this place was good but even she told me it was really bad. Not sure what happened between when my gf tried it and today but it sucked to throw it away mostly untouched

Maybe literally saved my life? We didn't see the allergy warning when we ordered our appetizer but brought it up for the entree. Our server (the POS said Meow M) noticed that we ordered something with peanut oil, which was for both of us, and called our attention to it. I would have had a severe allergic reaction and needed hospitalization had I eaten any!

Our server also made an excellent recommendation for bubble tea and my entree. We had a great experience.

Tucked away into the new Chinatown of Chicago, you find the pan-Asian restaurant M with a mixed menu from China, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam. Great place when you can’t make up your mind, or want to mix several Asian kitchens.

Food very well tasting and reasonably priced. Service limited, and atmosphere ok. But a nice place you won’t walk out hungry from.

- Value for money? Yes
- Worth a detour? No
- Best for (occasion)? A full variety of Asian food

Was looking forward to a refreshing coco pineapple beverage then I finally stabbed my straw onto the lid and took a nice sip only to be hit with the taste of spoiled milk blended with an onion. Don't know how they couldn't smell what they were serving because it has an aroma of onions and sour milk. Guess tonight wasn't my night 😔. Stuck on the bus with and getting looks because the smell has entered the air god save me plz.

Probably the best restaurant I have ever been to. Best food, best service and best atmosphere. Everything was top notch. I have never seen a restaurant in this country that offers that top quality service. No matter how busy it is, you get food within minutes of ordering, it tastes amazing. And people will come to your table and quickly let you pay right there while someone will pack your leftovers without you needing to even put the food in your box.

Modern decor with below average service. Everything were in a rush, leave you no time to look at the huge selection menu. Which I am not surprised with most of Asian restaurants. Water was offered once we seated. Drinks were good. Tender Beef with egg noodles were good and flavorful. Japanese egg tofu with mushrooms were slightly salty for me. Chinese broccoli with garlic were ok with a crisp. Steamed rice comes with the orders. We enjoyed their fruits smoothies more than dinning in the restaurant.

Tldr: possible tourist trap, servers with bad attitude. Food is okay, as an Asian I feel like the dishes are not very authentic (for example our pho dish came with fried scallions, which is not technically correct) but overall still okay. Worst part has to be the service. The waiters/hostess completely disregarded us asking for them to take our order, twice. Asked for spoons (as we all ordered noodles soup dish) and got 4 small plastic spoons thrown to our table. The overall attitude that we got from the servers was pretty passive aggressive. Since we didn’t feel well served, we were gonna tip 10%, only found out that they charge 18% service fee to party of 4. Would definitely not come back, as there are better authentic asian restaurants nearby who actually will serve you with better attitude. Avoid if possible, especially if you’re a tourist in the area.

I’ve never felt so strongly about a negative experience at a restaurant to the point of writing a review but with Joy Yee, I had to.

I had an absolutely dreadful experience at Joy Yee. From the moment we arrived, things went wrong. We were seated with only two plates and three forks for our party of four. Despite multiple attempts to flag down servers, it took a frustrating 30 minutes before anyone even took our order. Each time we tried to get someone’s attention, we were met with attitude - we were paying for service 🤡

When the servers did approach, they seemed annoyed by our requests. We had to ask repeatedly for basics like napkins and utensils—items that should have been provided automatically. The service was not just slow but condescending, making a simple meal out feel like an ordeal. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone looking for a pleasant dining experience.
Totally a tourist trap. The food was nowhere authentic and extremely overpriced. We ordered 2 different types of Vietnamese noodle dishes and the broth for both tasted the exact same, almost like they use the same packaged soup powder to make them both.

First time here and no one at front to help or take drink order so we got a seat.

When someone finally got to us to take our order, we ordered our drinks and ice cream mochi, and they pressed us for entrees.

We mentioned we didn’t want any and they said we had to order an entree so we ordered chicken fried rice just so we could get our drinks and promptly threw the rice away.

Dumb way to run a restaurant.

We left and went to hing kee across the walkway to eat.

I thought this would be a good spot for bubble tea, especially with the long line. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed. The drink lacked the rich flavor I was expecting, coming off as too bland. The tea itself didn’t have much depth, and the sweetness level was lower than I’d hoped. Even the tapioca pearls were a bit underwhelming—chewy, but not enough to elevate the overall experience. I was really looking forward to a burst of flavor, but this one fell short for me.

The women’s wasn’t the best but the issue was when my son and husband went to the men’s. They both nearly threw up my husband had to step outside for fresh air and wanted to leave immediately after. We reported to an employee not sure if they cleaned it or if this is normal.

Editing my review after trying for a second time. The meat dishes here are just disgusting. Flabby and wet, as if they’ve been boiling in sauce for hours. No texture whatsoever. And the sauces have an aroma of some kind of synthetic additive, you can smell it before it arrives at your table. I couldn’t eat my meal and asked to leave. There are so many better options in Chinatown, please don’t waste your time here if you want a true taste.

As a busy realtor, my schedule is often packed, leaving little time for personal adventures. However, my husband recently surprised me with a delightful field trip to Chinatown, Chicago—a place I had never explored before.

Our day was filled with discovering the unique charm of the area, and I even picked up some beautiful jade jewelry. After a day of walking and taking in the sights, we decided to try JoyYee, drawn in by its stellar reviews.

The experience did not disappoint. The service was impeccable, and the beef pho truly stole the show. It was flavorful and absolutely worth the visit. Additionally, the drink menu was a pleasant surprise, offering a wide array of options to suit any palate.

JoyYee is a must-visit if you find yourself in Chinatown. Whether you're a local or just passing through, the delicious food and extensive drink selection make it a standout choice.

This place has been around for a long time. I haven't been here in 15+ years. People still line up for those drinks. Their drink selection is impressive. The food however was not. I ordered the pineapple fried rice which for as long as I can remember was served in a pineapple. The picture even shows the rice inside the pineapple. We got it on a plate! I also got the string bean beef stir-fry dish. They put SHRIMP SAUCE in it, you heard it right! Shrimp sauce! Joy Yee is a restaurant that caters to predominately Americans. This is a very heavy and pungent Asian sauce. It just didn't work, it ruined the dish completely. Joy Yee really fell off, it's not what it used to be. The fact that they don't even serve food out of a pineapple anymore says it. The place was not even half full on a Friday night. The service was not existent honestly. We didn't have a specified waiter. They don't come to check on you or anything until you call them over, and most of the time they're looking elsewhere. Food is also crazy expensive. Each dish averages 20 dollars, Christ. Everybody just lines up for the smoothies. Surprise, you can buy fruits and put them in a blender with sugar.

Ate here with my family and everything was just spectacular.
We managed to get seated before it got busy, and man. I understand why it’s so busy. The food here is so good and so are the drinks!

The salted fish fried rice was AMAZING. Literally the best thing on the menu. The cuttlefish was also very good along with the Korean short ribs and noodles.
I’m a sucker for a good Vietnamese iced coffee and as always, it’s really good here too. I didn’t try the other drinks as I’m not a huge fan of smoothies, but everyone loved their drinks.

I think the price isn’t too crazy and for the size proportions/taste, definitely worth it (a bit biased bc the food was really good). The service here was also very good and ver quick despite how busy it was. She was also very kind and helpful as this was our first time here.

I've been visiting Joy Yee since 2018. JY was one of the best restaurants until yesterday. Yesterday I was so disappointed for their service. It was cold evening and I asked to get hot water. They brought a plastic pitcher with hot water. The water was lukewarm.
There were no servers until I called them to order menus. We waited almost ten minutes and other tables came ordered first. But we came earlier than they.

When I almost finished eating, they began to wipe out my table while we were sitting there.

On the check, they already added 18% of tips without asking us. On the last check, they also left the tip portion after including tips to the total amount. People may pay the tip double if they don't see it carefully.

Each menu we ordered around 20 bucks, but the amount of the food was not enough to value the price. We paid 95 bucks for 4 menus, but the service was so unexpected. We also paid for parking fees. Well it is time to look for another restaurant in that area.

food is really good but the bulls are like the size of a Popcorn bucket that may be a bit of exaggeration, but I’m trying to say the balls are big. It taste really good service was also good. All I had to do is ask for something and they would bring it over really good place.

Service was fast, food was good! I only think that they offer other cutleries because there are people who cannot use chopsticks with wet rice. Otherwise, all good!

5/2024 $18.95 for a pho special beef noodle soup, was surprised at the price but once I saw the bowl, I could see why. It was HUGE. I couldn’t finish it all. It could easily be two portions, so grab a friend. Bubble tea with tapioca was $7. Service was quick, and they were open late. Satisfied.

Food portion great
Poor prices ok
Food taste was good
Service. Was ok. Food came out when ready not serving entire table at same time.

Also party of 5 service fee already added.. I don't like this.

I have had several dishes and drinks from this Joyee location. They have a very large selection of Asian fusion. Today I ordered veggie pad thai and it is the weirdest pad thai I’ve ever had. Why is it all orange with no flavor? Very weird. I think I’ll stick to just ordering drinks here moving forward. $28 for 1 drink and a gross entree.

I love this place! One of my favorite restaurants in Chicago Chinatown District.
Huge variety of smoothies, freezes. Entrees are large enough for 2 people so sharing is an option. I have never been dissatisfied with any of my food choices. Quick service and food fresh!

I recently dined here yesterday with my boyfriend and a couple friends. We spent around $200 for just little portions of food…After we finished eating, we asked for the bill & some containers for our food. After we finishing paying in cash we left our table and went outside the restaurant. One of the old lady’s comes running outside yelling at us saying we didn’t pay for our food & not only was that embarrassing for us because there was a lot of people staring at us… she didn’t even apologize or anything.

This location for Joy yees is smack in the middle of Chinatown. Extremely difficult to find parking around here. And if you come during the weekend, chances are it’s going to be extremely packed inside where they will rush you in and try to get you fed quickly so they can rush you out.

It’s a fairly compact space so they are trying to maximize their earnings it seems.

Always good food and smoothies. Extensive interesting menu. Friendly efficient staff. A little pricey but, good.
Be careful and read your receipt. They add a service charge. Know this when calculating any gratuity. The service charge is already 18% of the tab.

quick and casual spot for food and drinks. they have an extensive list of bubble tea/fruit drinks. I usually go for their fresh fruit freeze cause I think it's their specialty, i love anything with mango in it. I got the beef with tomato sauce for food and it was good, the portion size was big and I ended up taking half to go.

Honestly this is overall a great place however the waiter that came to charge us forced us to tip. And when we did leave some kind of tip he just huffed. Like he got mad that we didnt leave much. Correct me if im wrong Its not mandatory to tip is it? Plus we cleaned up our table since we dont like to leave everything all over the place....

This place is over hyped. The food had big portions. But, terrible quality. I could feel my cholesterol levels rising. The chicken was extremely bland and the shrimp was soggy. And to add more salt to the wound, the food was OVERLY seasoned with SALT, at that point, you might as well get heartburn OR an actual heart attack. TOO ADD ON MORE, chopsticks were not offered until we asked, even after we asked they didn’t bring them until the second time we asked. The service wasn’t good either, the server was extremely rude to us. They never even asked for our drinks.
Food 2/10
Drinks 2/10
Prices 0/10 (Yes big portions but terrible food, was not worth 18-25 per person)
The only good thing was the portions, could feed a small town.

Fruit drinks are made from real fruits offering a variety of add on besides bobba, e.g. popping bobba, basil seeds, jelly, pudding etc. The place is good for groups. The food while large in serving is as one reviewer said, average, and for me, underseasoned and almost bordering on tasteless. Compared to other places in this area.

They had low options for seafood allergy and they weren’t willing to switch sauce on any beef entrees bc it has clam sauce. Our server didn’t bring refills and was at the end of his shift so he left and another server didn’t come to our table u til we were ready to pay.
