Jewel-Osco

Jewel-Osco on Main Street in Downers Grove has a great variety of food and plenty of options to choose from, but the service could use improvement. The staff always seems too busy, constantly moving around, which makes it hard to get help when needed. It’s understandable that the store gets busy, but the customer experience suffers as a result. The wide selection is a plus, but the hectic atmosphere makes shopping here less enjoyable than it could be. If they could manage the busyness better, it would be a much more pleasant experience.

I just want to highlight ONE employee in the whole store who seems to pay attention and his name is Bryan J who works in the hot food everyday. I’m a nurse and I come there EVERYDAY and he’s the ONLY ONE who seems to pay attention. Thank you Bryan J for making my days easier. Everyone else there is so rude.

Went there Saturday July 20th. First I went to deli. I was the only one there, two female employees behind counter didn’t even knowledge me. When I asked if I can have some help, they were both totally rude because I interrupted their conversation. I then went to the produce department. There was absolutely no produce shelves were empty! Whatever produce was there it had to be from at least last week. Old and moldy I was looking for somebody who worked in that department and no one was to be found so I just left I went to Mariano’s instead.

Went yesterday Saturday 7/6/24 to take advantage of the deli hot dog deal and to pick up some tater baby’s from the deli. I am standing at the deli counter waiting while 3 females are behind the deli. Two of them look directly at me and say nothing. They go about having their personal conversation. One comes around to the front of the deli case to look at something. She looks at me and says nothing. A fourth woman goes behind the counter looks at me as she is walking and says nothing. I have now been standing at the counter waiting for over 4 minutes. Finally one of the women looks at me and says “ do you need something “? I said yes I do. Another woman looks at me and says “oh didn’t see you there”. My reply was that three of you looked directly at me and ignored me. To which they giggled. Real professional.
I finally order what I needed and asked for one more hot dog from behind the counter to which she says “oh I don’t think I can give that you they are for someone else.” I said fine. Someone else behind the counter said it was fine. She handed me what I needed and was so completely rude while doing so.
I will never shop this Jewel ever again. It is convenient on my way home but best be sure I will go out of my way to a different one.
Whoever the manager here is needs to change your deli staff.

Generally this is a good store. However, they have a difficult time keeping reasonable inventory especially in produce. Went this morning after 8:00 a.m. and most of the vegetable bins were empty or with very little/picked over produce. This is not the first time I have had this experience here.

Friendly employees, but they were short on bag people so the cashiers were doing double duty (we helped with that). Big parking lot so no trouble finding a place to park. Convenient in and out .

The regular grocery sales part of the store is good but the deli and bakery area is so frustrating. They are constantly out of chicken and deli good and bakery has the donuts sitting behind the counter for an hour or more every morning so you can’t purchase them at a reasonable time.

Stopped in as this was nearest to my gym to pick up food for lunch. I encountered a total “bait and switch” at the deli. Krackus ham that was on sale? Nope! They only had Boar’s Head at double the cost. Muenster Cheese? Nope! Only Boar’s Head again. Potato Salad that was advertised? No again; only a more expensive option. This is poor management that does not manage stock levels to accommodate the demand for sale items. My experience today confirmed my reasons for hating the Jewel shopping experience. I’ll stick to my local, family -owned store and save a ton of aggravation.

Given a 20% discount card to be activated after 5 drug prescriptions. When I attempted to cash it in the card was confiscated. During a conversation with the pharmacy manager, he referred to medicare participants as "poor people".Then hung up on me.

Absolutely horrible. That's gotta be the worst Jewel I've ever been to, from expired products and rude stuff who doesn't want to honor sales and act like I'm trying to steal something. That happened several times already and even though this store is the closest to my house I happily drive somewhere else. Never again.

Regular change in a store layout isn't helpful to shopping. Moving food because you're out of one item and going another in it's place so a consumer think you've moved it isn't helpful either. Just keeps getting worse with time.

There has never been a more corrupt company than Jewel. Their food handling is atrocious.They recode things that are out of date and sell it to the public. They steal money from their employees. Do yourself a favor, stay away. I guess I didn't take my own advice and stay away. I went yesterday ash Wednesday, went to the deli expecting some kind of fish,shrimp, something that isn't meat. The add said they should have fish and or shrimp and they had zero. This is a poorly managed store period. The deli workers are lazy and nothing is ever as it's supposed to be. Let's face it Jewel especially this one does not care about its customers.

For some reason, this location doesn’t carry some of the same Asian mushrooms that you find at the Naper blvd location. They’re usually 99 cents. A star was taken off. Everything was well stocked. If you have the app and an account, you can save even more. This location isn’t as busy as some of the others.

They make really good guacamole at this store. The lines have seemed to move faster. Which was a reason I used to shop elsewhere. But I have seen improvements in waiting times.

Ive visited this store several times. I like shopping here even though its a little further away than my neighborhood Jewel. The store is usually very well stocked, clean & most of the employees appear friendly. But, there is one lady that works in the Deli Department that has earned this Jewel Osco store location one less star. I cant include her name because of course her name tag is turned backwards so her name is not visible. But Given her nasty disposition, that name tag is intentionally placed on backwards. Every single time Ive gone to the deli counter at this store & that lady is working, she remains the same. She is Consistently Rude. I greet her with "how are you" or a "Good morning" & her response is always with disdain " what do u need"...
She never ever ever responds to my greeting & today was no different. She's obnoxiously Loud, she yells across the area to her other coworkers, and seems to just generally be an unhappy person. Since I dont know her name i will have to describe her so if ure African American, u can avoid her... She's a short chubby Caucasian lady. Im Chubby too so I dont mean any harm in the description. One thing I did notice was how her demeanor changed when she started servicing the other customers.
And of course they were not African American. Her tone got a lot softer. Thankfully not all employees at this store are like this lady. As a matter of fact there's one in particular that works at the Deli counter also who is Always nice...always kind... Her name is Janet. Janet is always courteous & professional. She does not slam the deli products down on the cutting station like her coworker. She does not get agitated & yell if a customer doesn't like the thickness or thin cut of meat or cheese she's sliced. . So if u visit this store and u want good customer service at the deli counter avoid the lady I described in the early part of this review. I pray for this lady. I hope whatever has happened in her life to make her be so rude that GOD make it better. I pray peace & healing for her in JESUS Name... shopped today Oct 13th 2023 & Met a wonderful customer service clerk name Cher..... She was very friendly, helpful, courteous and kind. She brought back memories of what customer service meant back in the late 80's, early 90's at Jewel Osco. Thanks Cher. U made this visit Awesome!

I didn't go in this last time someone else went in. Better than it was some stuff still a little pricey and different than other stores the only issue we had was we go to self serve for a reason convenience and not to deal with anybody and I'm holding something in my hands asking my dad do you know if we ring all three of these up or two of them cuz it's 3 for $12 deal on the fruit so I'm reading the things that got rung up to see if it's in the list and it's not so I go to ring it up and the guy goes what are you looking for and I'm like no I'm just telling my dad blah blah blah and he grabs the thing out of my hand it says no you didn't ring it up I'm like yeah I know I was going to do it when you interrupted us and then he comes by again grabs and ice cream out of my hand and starts ringing that up I'm you know I'm not at the register I'm at self-serve I don't want your fat nasty dirty grubby hands in my stuff. If you wasn't profusely sweating and his hands where It nasty and stuff it wouldn't be as big of a deal but even in general someone doing that what's the point of going to self serve. Didn't go in this time maybe they'll have it fixed when I go in next time.

Not a big fan of Jewel, but they are okay for basic grocery shopping. Bakery is always too sweet or tastes like chemicals... highly processed food. Deli stuff, with the exception of chicken, always looks a bit old. Most produce is average, and usually priced higher than other grocery stores.

I have to add...it makes a difference what Jewel Osco store you go to. I have a few favorites...and one that I really don't like because they are always out of products, items on shelves are often expired, aisles are packed with junk, the place is messy and most of the clerks are rude or unfriendly. The manager of the store makes a HUGE difference.

Always helpful have been Sue on cashier and Dustin Ackley. Due to a wider variety of hot bars, I stopped frequenting Jewel about a year ago. But, since I attended yesterday's Trump rally, I will resume my visits. I've heard that Jewel received negative feedback from some customers, and I'm here to support you for allowing anyone—whether they are on the right or left—to peacefully display signs on the sidewalk close to Jewel. Gratitude to Jewel for allowing peaceful speech.

This location has deteriorated over the last year. I bought yogurt yesterday, just opened it today to find it was curdled. The sell by date was 7 days ago. Jewel has the worst produce of any area grocery store. To save money, the company now buys 2nd or 3rd tier produce, according to a Jewel employee. It shows. This location is crowded, dirty, and understaffed. I will shop at Pete's henceforth.

Great accommodating staff, decent sale prices, plus they offer delivery as well as a pick up and go option. Both those ways of getting your groceries has been a Godsend to me, since I'm experiencing back and knee problems and can no longer shop inside the store at this time.

I will start off by saying I have tried my best to give this Jewel Osco location every opportunity for my business. I regularly visit this location for my grocery needs due to the close proximity to my house. Up until recently, I have not had many issues. However, over the course of this past year I have had so many bad experiences that I will likely be taking my business elsewhere.

The primary issue that I have with this store is the pharmacy. The pharmacy staff is extremely rude, and make you feel like you are an inconvenience to them every time you are trying to fill a perscription. They are clearly very understaffed, which I understand is what is leading to their frustration, but it has become a severe problem every time that I am in there to fill a prescription, which is usually multiple times per month. I have even worked with them to call ahead to get them to fill the prescriptions and they were still not ready 2 days later. I will certainly be taking my prescriptions elsewhere in the future.

The reason why I am giving 2 stars instead of 1 star is because I do still enjoy the convenience of Jewel Osco, and I truly want to continue to give my business to this store. However, until I see some changes in the pharmacy and overall customer service at this location, I will be taking my business elsewhere. Very disappointed.

I made the fatal mistake of stopping by this Jewel store yesterday for a couple of items. I definitely know better NOT to go there; the employees are all Horrible! The absolute Worst customer service ever!!! It is almost as if sadists and customer haters are a prerequisite for hiring. Anyway, I stopped at the deli counter for some potato wedges. There were 4 people behind the counter, but no one could wait on me. Finally, some younger guy asked if he could help me. When I asked for potato wedges, he whispered, (yes, whispered), to the crabby loudmouth lady that I only wanted potato wedges. With that she hollered, "How Many Do You Want"!!!!!??? I replied, " How many can I get"? She screamed, "THEY'RE $3.99 A POUND"!!!!!!!!! I replied, "A pound is fine". With that, I finished shopping and left.
I have had one issue after the next with this store; everything from them selling you outdated milk and dairy products, and then using Covid as an excuse for not taking it back, to them not wanting to cash in lottery tickets. Just a pathetic group of people who hate their jobs, customers, and their lives.
Trust me, I will not get any response back from management regarding this; I have dealt with their management before who are actually Far Worse than their employees.
Meanwhile, feel free to stop by and check out any of their dairy products. They are STILL ALL OUTDATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just an update... So, I was wrong about Not getting a response from Jewel and received this wonderful, generic, computer generated one, asking me to contact them via their Contact Us page on their website ... Yeah right, not going to waste my time , thanks anyways.....

This has been the go to store for me for years. The cashiers are very nice, even though it can be crowded at the check out. They just rearranged the store and it's not as easy to find what you want. It's going to take time to get used to the layout.

Maybe it's just me but our Jewel seems to have gotten better overall, produce, bakery etc. If you look for them they offer some pretty good sales/deals through their app.

Understaffed, rude, overpriced, and their coupons and discounts are either absurd or require you to install applications. I don't want buy 7 get 3 free on perishable items. I want to support anything that isn't Walmart, but this jewel makes it tough.

Better than the Jewel in Lemont and they wear masks too.... Lemont store had employees not wearing masks who even were behind meat counter cutting meat & cooking chickens without mask or even hair net. I haven't gone back to Lemont store since Sept. 2020 after reporting them to corporate office.

There's just something about this place that just feels.... gross. Perhaps it's the smell in the meat area, or the temperature of the milk in the cold storage (i.e. it feels warm), or both, but I refrain from ever buying anything here that should be refrigerated. I will say, the produce is actually very good, however.
I live across the street, and I'd rather go the extra 4 minutes to Mariano's unless I just need one or two (non-refrigerated) things quickly.

I went inside this Jewel yesterday Saturday, around 10:30-10:45p.m., and picked up only 4 items, proceeded to check out and there was only one register open, waited behind two other customers, while the cashier slowly ranged them up and conversed with them, comes my turn, she rang me up, I entered my debit card, but accidentally entered the wrong pin, I pressed the cancel key to reenter my pin correctly and she got upset and instead of bringing up my total so I can pay, she's leaning on the belt and asking me why did I hit cancel, she then apologized to the guy behind for the wait, went on to tell him, that she didn't know what I did to cancel the order, so I told her, I just told you that I entered the wrong pin, so can you please reset the register so I can pay, I finished paying and proceeded to walk away and she tells the guy behind... I don't know why people have to have so many different numbers for everything, I was going to go back to complain to the manager, but the 4 things that I bought, were for my grandkids that came to spend the night with me, and were waiting for it. If she doesn't want to deal with situations as simple as that, then she should not be doing that kind of job, because the issue was with me and she had no business to comment to the other person behind me. Rant over.

At 2:15, the cashier at the 15 or less was so happy and sweet, she gave me some Christmas cheer, I am visiting from Colorado and surprised that customers don't give eye contact or make small conversation, mabey they are focused on their shopping lists
