Whitmore Ace Hardware

Whitmore Ace Hardware in Downers Grove is just a wonderful place to shop. It beats the big box competitors by a mile. Everything is clearly marked, and you don't have to walk miles and miles to find what you came in for. There's always employees around who are very nice, friendly, and extremely helpful. Great atmosphere in this store, well organized, and fully stocked with everything you may need for your home. Shop here first, you'll be glad you did!

Decent hardware overall. They have most the items you need for outdoor or indoor. My only issue is that they don’t have the older models for the flap used for plumbing in a toilet. I found everything here to be reasonably priced. Firewood here is 6.49 though.
Service here was good overall.
4/5 recommend if you need to get your standard items.

With Tawana, she always has a smile for me as we compare seasonal decorating ideas that I always purchase at Ace (of course!) As for Greg and Gabe, they have helped me out above and beyond in services I could not ever accomplish myself. I truly consider all 3 friends. They're always helpful inside and it has that wonderful hardware store smell. It's a place you can get in and out if you went or spend an hour looking around at all their good stuff. Conveniently located in the hole at 63rd and main. I'm sure the only reason this parking lot doesn't flood out is because of the enginuity of the Ace hardware employees!

Needed to replace propane tank for outdoor grill, but find it heavy and awkward to "switch out" at my age. Store staff was wonderfully friendly in both selection and purchase, as well as careful referral to local handyman able to make timely home visit at very reasonable cost. I felt important with small purchase and look forward to returning for other "projects".

Great Ace Hardware. Under new ownership. Very helpful, easily accessible employees. Went to another Hardware store trying to get keys made twice, they never worked. Went to Whitmore Ace Hardware and they got it right the first time! Thank you for that. Well laid out store, easy to find what you're looking for.

Had several keys cut by a young employee yesterday. Very skilled worker. Kind, professional, and great communicator. Best cut keys in my life. They work as good or better than the originals. Highly recommend.

Shopped here (green Knowles store) for years! Approx. 2 years ago, the shelves were "reorganized " to where nothing makes sence. I can elaborate if you contact me. The staff is by large, priceless! Always helpful. Your cashier is always friendly and asks if there are were any issues. What I like best, is, I can be in and out of ACE very quickly! At ACE, I can get what I need at the store, and and be at home working on my project, where, if I was at home depot, I'd still be looking for a parking spot.

Great place to find that hardware or repair item that you aren't sure about. I love that I can ask someone to help me figure out what I need. Staff is knowledgeable and friendly. I've had screens repaired, keys made, and bought lots of things to solve household problems.

I still prefer Home Depot for most of my hardware or home repair needs, mainly because it is less expensive and has more choices. But this place is always worth the visit.

We were looking for a specific light bulb. Mark went out of his way to look on-line to find what we were searching for. Everyone, and I mean everyone in that location is so helpful and polite. Great job to this store's management. I always come back to this location even tho we have a closer Ace Hardware.

The battery malfunctioned on my brand new Ego lawnmower that I bought at this location. Ego support was useless. I called Ace and explained my problem and they told me to come in and see the GM. I wasn't expecting much, but the GM took 30 minutes of her time on a busy Sunday to locate a new battery. There were several roadblocks, but she didn't give up until one was located. I was so impressed with this customer service, especially in this day and age. This is definitely my go-to hardware store from now on.

Fuí hoy a sacar una copia de mi llave del auto y el señor adulto mayor que estaba en el mostrador de las llaves muy absurdamente y déspota me dice que no me va a sacar la copia porque no la he comprado ahí y que no sabe si mi llave va a dañar la máquina. Una llave normal de auto que solo necesita ser cortada igual que lo hice en ACE de Chicago hace dos meses. Deberían contratar gente sensata que sepa dar un buen servicio, que no sea racista y que tenga criterio para tratar a los clientes. Simplemente no quiso hacer la copia de mi llave.

I went today to get a copy of my car key and the elderly man who was at the key counter very absurdly and despoticly tells me that he is not going to get a copy because I did not buy it there and that he does not know if my key will damage the machine. A regular car key that just needs to be cut just like I did at Chicago ACE two months ago. They should hire sensible people who know how to give good service, who are not racist and who have criteria to treat customers. He just didn't want to make a copy of my key

Been shopping here for years and it's always been a great experience. Much more personal than the big box stores. Today though the true spirit of a locally owned business was on display. After buying the wrong size parts, and of course throwing the receipt away, I stopped back in to get correct part. Explained I didn't have receipt and the manager, Derek I think, said no problem, let me swap it out for the right parts and was on my way. No hassle, and a friendly smile!

Utterly atrocious communication regarding delivery. Grill scheduled for delivery on Monday. Was called at 11:00 on Sunday and asked if I could take delivery that day as they didn’t have a driver for Monday. I already had plans for later in the day so I asked when I could expect delivery. I was told right away and they would leave within 10 minutes and be at my house in 20. Great I though. I mentioned that I had plans for later in the afternoon ~1:00pm but was assured that this wouldn’t be an issue. I mean I am a few miles away and they are leaving right away. Not a problem. I get my grill early and I help them out. Everyone is a winner right? WRONG. 30 minutes pass. Then a hour. I call nobody picks up. I call 4 or 5 more times and finally at 1:00 they pick up. Well I’m now told that my grill will be there at around 3:00pm. So that is my day ditched.

I get it that things happen and had this been a regular delivery day I would have the whole day free. However, when you call a customer to ask if you can deliver a day earlier and then give a time for that delivery. Common decency would dictate that if there is a further problem that you call that person and tell them. I shouldn’t have to call 5 times to get information.

You can do better than this ACE. Not a happy customer at all.

I recently moved to Downers Grove and have made several trips here to fix and update our new (but older home). Although most of the employees are helpful, Rubi truly goes the extra mile. They should clone her, she is that good. She always has a pleasant smile and is eager to help.She doesn't just point you to the right aisle, she takes you there and helps you select the right product for your task. She'll even look it up on her phone and direct you to a DIY video on YouTube. She's helped me 3 times now. She's my "Go To" from now on.

Ace is a great place for shopping for odd items of hardware and accessories that the usual big box stores do not carry. I needed 7/32" bolts and having tried Menards, Home Depot, I called Ace and was connected to Kyle in the hardware section. He gave me the sizes available and the price and I was able to get a 5mm bolt and it's nut.

The one less star is for the checkout where despite having 3 small open bags of bolts and nuts and a can of paint, the checkout person did not bag them or offer a bag.

When I need home maintenance stuff, I go here. I love the cozy size store, and no matter what the staff's gender or age, all they're Professional, so most of them explain about the item what I need, more than I need ! Especially I like the system that there are many elders ! I love the family system that 3 + generations live together ! But now, our life is very individualized, so we have very little chance to talk to our Grandparents. But here we can meet Many Grandpas ! They're the most professionals for customers by their long enough experiences ! I wish many business keep this system ! 👍

Kin-Ko Ace Hardware was the only store in a 50 mile radius that had the exact size bolts that I needed. These bots were for a 1994 Buick's brake wheel cylinder. Even the Buick dealerships did not stock these bolts any longer.

I was looking for a toro electric snow blower and the Ace hardware location in Downers Grove has it. Just to make sure i called the night before 2/18/21 @730pm. I spoke to a guy of course he said they have it. Next morning I drove from Niles, IL to Downers Grove and viola, they don't have it. Great job, whoever the guy i spoke with. Perhaps next time try to check the items the customer is asking about, I'm sure it's not going to take a century of your time to do it.
