We loved Monks! The coffee slapped, the atmosphere was eclectic yet made us feel very safe as an LGBTQ couple. If we lived in town, this would be our go-to spot with its helpful and chill bartenders.

The Chai Tea Latté was excellent. I cannot say the same about the service. That said, I did not feel welcome. A patron who looked different than us was treated warmly. My friend was treated gruffly. Both were standing next to each other. We won't be returning. First time in Dubuque. First business visited. Hopefully, this is the exception and not the rule.

Amazing coffee and such a cool place! The great part is that they serve coffee until midnight almost daily. If looking for that late night espresso or pick me up, this is definitely the place to go. Spoken from a true coffee finatic!

Excellent atmosphere, stopped by after a long walk with kids along the Mississippi River walk. Orange soda for the kids and latte for me and a round of chess. We even spotted a working accordion there where my boys got to play it for fun. Super friendly owner and if you are a Cubs fan.... you have a place here! At night you can enjoy a nice selection of Microbrews as well!

But seriously, one of the best places to go for coffee, or something a little heavier. Good selection of beer and liquor. Bartenders know their stuff. They host good music from time to time as well, chill place.

Walked in, no one welcomed us. Stood at counter and no one asked what we wanted. Walked out. Disappointed, as this place is about a minute walk away from me.

Ohhh How great the coffee is here. You have to see for yourself how funny, nice and cheerful the service is here when you come here for a coffee. I haven't met such friendly people for a long time. And the decor is absolutely brilliant.

Out of towners stopped in on a snowy morning in desperate search of delicious coffee - and wow were we in for a treat. Ordered beverages for 8 people, all were delicious and our barista (who is owner) was very chill and happy to make our drinks. Absolutely loved the local art and overall vibes, would love to come back if we’re in the area again!

💜💜💜💜💜five hearts. Love that this place exists. Dubuque x pat from the Take 5 days here. So happy this space lives on. Welcoming and comfortable. Our mocha and chai were perfect. Good music, good vibes. PS thanks for having multiple non-dairy milks and not charging extra for them.

This place is beautiful! The barista/bartender is really friendly and welcoming! The prices are just great!
Highly recommended! It's literally number 1 to go place in Dubuque & 1 of my top 10 in the US!

Been coming here for years and thought about putting in a review. Awesome concerts, best irish coffee in town (regular coffee drinks are good too). Extremely relaxed and at-home feel. Best place to go play D&d. Just all around fantastic bar. What would take it over the top would be to add a lil breakfast kitchen.

Came in for a quick cup of coffee... wandered in headed to the bar... waited while the bar tender/batista talked to one of the 2 clients... and waited... no one ever said hi, I'll be with you soon, nothing didn't even look my way. I waited for a few minutes, then walked out. Very disappointed

This place reminds me of all of the Chicago coffee houses from the early 90s before they went away. Urbis Orbis. Cafe Voltaire. Coffee Chicago. Places you could sit all day and read or talk or stare into the middle distance and think about stuff.

This place is like that. Comfortable and easygoing. Fine coffee, good beer selection and friendly staff.

For me, this is the best café in town. It is a free and open place to discuss ideas, meet with friends or meet new and interesting people. The atmosphere is very chill. If your like me and love Portland Oregon or west coast culture, you will find an oasis of freedom and artistic flavor.

Reviewing the coffee shop aspect - Monk's is a great spot to grab a coffee near the funicular. Cool and unusual setup, with the full bar integrated into the coffee shop. Some nice seating options including a few tables outdoors. Next time I'm in Dubuque I will come for a beer too!

Amazing and cozy ambiance.
I recommend everyone to try their hot mocha.
They don't have a kitchen but there are snacks.

If you are bar hopping this place is a must ☺️

Had a fun time visiting this unique place while passing through town. Monday night was their local stand up comedy night. We had a great time! Would stop back again if ever passing trough. Nice craft beer menu!

It was decent. The cappucino has a very deep bold taste and comes in a good size portion. The cafe itself is very welcoming and homelike. Would be a fun place to meet new people!

What a cool out of the way place! Upstairs coffee and drinks, beer and mixers. Some cool seating areas. Downstairs has live music, open mics and some neat areas also. Kind of an urban industrialized feel to the place. A good place to hang with friends.

This is one of my favorite coffee shops to go to. The atmosphere is vintage and I enjoy it greatly. The absolute only downside to this place is you need to climb stairs to get into the establishment.
Also this is a bar that has alcohol via at night. It's also a place for multiple reasons. Coffee bar, regular bar, also there is a sitting area upstairs across from the coffee bar, there is a nice comfortable restroom and also there are comedians, bands that come there to play downstairs in the other bar area. Children can't come in the bar area at night. Have ID ready at night. Again best coffee bar in town to me.

Best coffee I've had. Forget about Starbucks and Dunkin, this is the place to go. It's a very quaint place in downtown Dubuque. I drove in from out of town and chose the first place that seemed local. What a great choice! If you have the chance to visit the place I hope you'll be as pleasantly surprised with the quality like I was. Don't forget to tip!

Old house converted into an eccentric coffee house by day, bar by night. Lots of potential for a great atmosphere that unfortunately faded quickly by a barista who showed no interest in his customers other than ringing up the order. Brewed coffee was average. I'll give Monks another try if I get back to the area, but for this trip my coffee house choice is Charlotte's on 11th & White.

We visited this funky little coffee shop during a weekend visit to Dubuque. We ordered cold brews which were super flavorful and had great service! Love the Golden Girls theme on the inside and would be curious to visit at night when this place turns into a bar!
