Get your Urbandal merch here!
Hy Vee stocks a great selection of local school colors as well as Iowa Colleges in the fall. You will be able to get Urbandale J Hawks and Johnston colors in several sizes. They have hats, too. Hy Vee Urbandale does a good job promoting local schools and colleges. We would like to see more Chiefs metch as Hy Vee also has commercials with Patrick and Travis. We have also seen the Superbowl trophy and the Stanley cup displayed in the store. The store always gets behind sporting events, and you will regularly see specials on snacks and beverages associated with sports events. The liquor department is fully stocked with any beer, wine, or spirits you can imagine. They have an entire aisle of chips, one with snacks and another with popcorn. Don't miss out on the soda "pop" and flavored waters. I also just saw 2 pallets of cashews in the front aisle with a nice sale price. I would urge everyone to shop local and with a store that supports our schools and teams.

Why is this Urbandale Douglas store so cold? I saw a lady shopping today wrapped in a blanket. It was very uncomfortable to shop today. We ate at Wahlburgers. It was warm in there however. We had shopping to do at Sam's Club after HyVee and that store was much warmer. I think warming the store for customers comfort should be really looked at. I am actually surprised employees have not complained.

Got home today and noticed the grocery item was expired when I was about to start cooking. Drove back to get an exchange. Customer service said “ok, come back with the new item”. All of the items I wanted were expired-so I grabbed a similar item.

Waited at customer service for awhile for the same employee to ask if I found what I wanted. I said no, they’re all expired and she said “oh ok”. I spent 30 plus minutes driving ect. For an expired grocery item to not hear “I’m sorry” once. Awful customer service and I didn’t even end up with the item I wanted to purchase.

I have been using the Hyvee pharmacy for 15 years and always had great service at the Hyvee in Windsor heights. After Jenn left I have been going to the Urbandale Hyvee. I take a med that cost a lot out of pocket. Jenn and some of the others at Windsor heights would help get the coupon to help my med go from over $300 to less than $80. I guess the pharmacist are too busy to help navigate or even try to help with that process. Maybe be gauging patients is incentivize to help their bottom line. I only do 1 stars if I believe a location deserves it. Maybe this might be a little help for other patients thier.

This Hy Vee is always busy. Access is very easy but the parking can be difficult to get a parking space. They seem to run out of advertised specials quickly. I no longer do my regular shopping here. They have become very expensive and trying to sell too much other stuff than groceries. I hate that they have special programs that you have to sign up for to get better discounts.
They have a bottle redemption area which is usually busy but glad it’s available. It’s open a very limited time, everyday 10:00 - 1:00 & 2:00 - 6:00.

If you are getting food from the Chinese area or any other fresh prepared food area, plan to take your lunch or dinner to the regular check out. Hyvee on Douglas no longer allows check out in any other location. Very frustrating. Either lack of employees or lack of organization and leadership in that store. There have been a few changes at this location that don't seem to be in the benefit of the customer.

The dining area was very dirty with food and garbage on tables and the floor. There was no silverware left in the dining room. The garbage can was full and overflowing. Did they just give up trying?

Always have a pleasant experience when shopping for groceries at our Urbandale Hyvee. However, I am typing this review totally due to Customer Services. Krisi is incredible. I stopped by to ship a package and she went above and beyond to explain the difference between flat rate shipping prices and shipping using a non flat rate box. She then went the extra mile helping me get everything packed and taped up and ready to ship. I don't ever go into an establishment expecting anything other than "you get what you pay for " mentality but Krisi knocked that mentality into the outfield right away..... Home run !!!Kudos to Hyvee on having an employee like Krisi there. Beautiful soul inside and out.
Krisi, you are a gem. Thank you !!!!

Been in one Hy Vee.... basically all the same. Or Target, or Walmart or whatever...
Hy-Vee has a.large selection. Prices? Depends on what you're buying. Some other shops are more for the same item...or less.. depends on their buying volume. This Hy Vee is clean, spacious...as are others.

Loved the free samples, made us buy more than we intended lol.

Everyone knows Hy-Vee is not the place to shop when trying to save money. They have everything and are open most hours, you pay for that. Another thing you pay for at Hy-Vee is the privilege of buying food in the same place that dogs are allowed to relieve themselves on the floor. This morning I went to Hy-Vee Fresh for coffee. A woman brought in her Pomeranian, which left a huge mess two steps into the store. This was obviously not a service dog, just a crass dog-owner who thought it’d be cute to watch her mutt pee everywhere 2 feet from the donuts. While she made a fuss and excuses I interjected, reminding her that food was served here and — by the way — this was not the dog’s fault, but hers. In a blindingly insightful managerial swoop, the Beta-in-Charge emerged from the back (ostensibly where they keep the mops), scooted right past the dog mess and over to the register, so he could prioritize admonishing ME to be quiet. As we both watched that woman smear her dog’s mess all over the floor with a paper towel it occurred to me that I don’t need to shop at Hy-Vee. I’ve seen the exact same thing happen at their grocery store next door, more than a few times. Hy-Vee allowing customers to bring their dogs into a place selling food and defecate on the floor is disgusting, not to mention an affront to actual service dogs and their owners who truly need them. I left my coffee on the counter. God knows how dirty that probably was. 🤦‍♂️

The store as a whole is great, with the exception of the fried chicken on a weekend. I’ve had it thru the week when Erik (the boss of chicken) is around and it’s great. Twice now I’ve had it on a weekend (when I assume there’s no boss of chicken) and it’s been terrible. The first time I actually touched base with the store and they sorted me out. I can’t go back every time the chicken has sat there for too long and gone stale. I have my own theory on it but I don’t work for hyvee so it’s up to them guys to fix it to get a five star rating!

The Johnston Hy-Vee is terrible. They have locked the doors closest to the pharmacy so you have to walk to the main doors and then backtrack, they have done away with their cold salads in the deli with the exception of a few that are prepackaged, the pharmacy has reduced it's hours, Hy-Vee ATM's are no longer privileged status, the shelves are bare on certain days, they no longer give an employee discount, the restrooms are perpetually filthy, etc. I definitely do not recommend it.

We shop here all the time. Lately our experience has not been good. We have constantly picked up items that either expire in a couple of days or have already expired. We have made it a point to look at the expiration date for everything it is ridiculous.
These kids that stock the produce and shelves don't look at the dates or condition of any of the stuff they are stocking. I don't expect them to check every date but when you see moldy produce and then just stack the fresh stuff on top thats a big problem. I'm tired of being hit from both directions, poor quality standards and over priced groceries.

Constantly find spoiled fruits and veggies on the shelves. Cracked eggs left on the shelves. Rude old lady in the liquor section snapped a comment at me. I asked her a question, the blonde looked dumbfounded and neither responded. I asked the question two more times before she finally gave me an answer and snapped No at me. Terrible store, never going back, and I don’t recommend anyone to use this location. I can’t emphasize enough how disrespected I was on this visit and why you employ that “woman” to work there. Over priced items everywhere, and they force you to self checkout, if you’re saving money on staff, let your customers save money too.

One of the newest & biggest Hy-Vee stores. Parking was not hard to find though it took forever to find a can of simple chili beans -- there are three areas. I did careful shopping ahead although two items were marked down again for Perks! Prices all came out correctly with "pre-loaded" coupons, except for one that the cashier corrected for me.
Fun fact: if you walk through the frozen food cases they light up inside. It's as close to Broadway as I'll get this year.
