Roasting Plant Coffee
About the Company

We are Roasting Plant®, a bunch of coffee-lovers from the Lower East Side NYC who set out on a quest to create the perfect just-roasted cup.

Roasting Plant Coffee was founded by Mike Caswell in his garage with the invention of Javabot™, an in-store roasting and brewing system that automatically roasts coffee in every Roasting Plant café, and quickly brews every custom cup to order.

Mike's love and experience in coffee (from Coffee Connection in Boston to Starbucks corporate in Seattle) and his deep understanding of engineering and business process led him to develop Javabot. This state of the art system roasts in micro-batches in every store and transports beans through tubes using air or pneumatics.

Adrianna was so great and sweet…my coffee was just a little too sweet for me and without asking she offered to remake it. :) Even when I apologised for the inconvenience, she said that I absolutely did not need to apologise. Really awesome experience. Will definitely come back!

My favorite coffee shop in detroit. The tubes that suck the beans across the room are so cool. The different flavors are all unique and well described. Breakfast chorizo burritos are the perfect light breakfast. There is a reason it is often busy.
When I made unusual requests that staff was always so helpful and friendly.

Roasting Plant Detroit used to be one of my favorite coffee spots, but after my experience, I will ever go back. My significant other and I have been loyal customers for many years, visiting multiple times a week and always receiving great service, until Horizon Will, the new manager, completely ruined that.
When I got my drinks, they were half full despite being in large cups as I ordered. I politely brought this to Horizon’s attention, expecting the issue to be resolved quickly and respectfully. Instead, I was met with rudeness, defensiveness, and a condescending attitude. I explained my order (something I’ve been getting for years without issue) and Horizon dismissed me, saying I should “order a large in a medium cup because of the extra milk instead.” For clarity, I wasn’t asking for extra milk for free, I requested one less espresso shot, replaced with more milk, something your baristas have always accommodated.
What really set me off was her comment that the excellent service I’ve received for years was just baristas “being nice to me.” When in fact, many baristas at the shop rang my order the same no matter who I encountered. The comment was uncalled for and outright insulting.
Horizon then made me wait an unreasonable amount of time to remake the drinks, only to mess them up again. I had to go back to the counter for another barista to finally fix them. It honestly felt like Horizon went out of her way to make an example of me in front of other customers. Is this really how your “manager” treats loyal customers?
Even if my order was somehow misunderstood, there’s no excuse for Horizon’s unprofessional, dismissive, and egregiously rude behavior. If this is the direction Roasting Plant is heading under her management, I don’t see how I can continue to support this place.
Fix this. Your loyal customers deserve better.

This coffee shop has a unique setup with coffee pipes, which is quite interesting, and the atmosphere isn’t bad. However, seating is limited, and the prices are very high. It’s disappointing that they don’t offer mugs for dine-in customers and instead use plastic cups. The tea was terrible, and I wouldn’tm recommend anything beyond a small coffee. The one redeeming quality is its beautiful location, which might make it feel worth a visit—but be prepared to spend a lot. Especially if you're looking for an Americano, I’d recommend heading across the street to Starbucks for better quality coffee and espresso at a more reasonable price.

Down last night to see the Christmas lights and just hang out. Our group waited close to a half hour in line and just as we got up to place our order they said sorry we are no longer taking any orders and will be closing in 10 minutes. Very unprofessional, should have taken care of the people that have been waiting inside. Stop people at the door and tell them they are closing.

Took my son here to get him a hot chocolate while we walked around in the cold admiring the Christmas tree and such. Line behold that hot chocolate, a small, cost nearly $5 dollars. It would have been fine if that said small was an actual small. I don't consider an 8oz cup a small. That's a joke and purely a rip off. Not to mention that a quarter of the 8oz cup was whip cream. I'll never be back. Tacky place wouldn't recommend.

Thought I'd give this place a try. It was terrible! The service is mediocre, the cashier doesn't even greet you or look at you. I asked for a recommendation, she said, "They're all good." It wasn't even busy to lean on the counter and act like you could care less. I ordered an $8 smoked white chocolate matcha latte & it was meh. It wasn't creamy nor rich in flavor. You can barely taste the white chocolate or matcha. It's only a hint of flavors. I wouldn't recommend this place.

Service has gone way downhill over the last 6 months or so. They are very disorganized even when it's not very busy, and only care about the base order of your coffee and literally never get the modifiers correct. Not even if you just ask for oat milk. Very aggravating when you're paying $6-7 for a cup of coffee.

Not a good place to buy whole beans. They have a great selection, but the prices aren't posted so you have no idea how much the beans will cost, plus it's hard to put together a blend. I ended up paying more than $30 for less than a pound of beans. The barista behind the counter wasn't much help. I have bought whole beans all over the country but this was the first (and by far the worst) negative experience I have had.

This place has a cool concept where the beans you select get vacuum piped from the centre of the store straight into a coffee machine. I say this to make this place better otherwise it doesn’t matter! I’m from Los Angeles CA and I’ve travelled all over this country to every state for work. I’ve been out of the country so many times, and over the years I’ve developed a love for coffee and its grades and how coffee has levels to it. I like to study how to make coffee and brew it. I’ve made pour overs to egg coffee using a real egg boiling coffee over the stove for a smoother taste! This place has a scale they place your coffee on and the scale is very deceptive giving out different readings every time the coffee is placed on it and you can be charged over the price due to their faulty scale reading. At first over the last couple of years I just didn’t say anything as if the scale needed to be re calibrated as they said and just bought the coffee because Star Bucks and most coffee places have low grade or terrible coffee! But recently last year going into this year I went in and I didn’t wanna be charged the high amount and asked what’s the problem with the scale. A manager was called and they used a weight scale behind the counter they said it’s more accurate but to this day most employees from their black to white ones will use the broken scale and you will be over charged! This is wrong and deceptive! I waited a year to make this review and recently bought coffee their last week! So this is not over emotion. I would recommend another coffee shop to go to regularly or if you desire to buy a whole bag of coffee and that’s FRANK CHAZZANO COFFEE ROASTERS in BERKLEY MI. If your like me and wanna be two bags or one bag and do your own brew, go there. They have over 30 coffees from through out the world and He specializes in making sure the roast is down to the note, and you will buy a pound of coffee for 18-24$ or even more but it will be the exact price for the pound. If you buy a pound for 22$ its 22$ exactly no scale to charge more based on beans in the bag. And if you want a half pound it’s exactly 11$. The coffee at the roasting plant give less for more money!!! And you will pay extra because they use a broke scale and someone in management told me they told employees not to use the scale but that was last year and I just went and the scale is still broke! If your in a rush and just need a cup or more and maybe a bag, this place is good coffee but you might be over charged for the bag. If your brewing coffee regularly or want to buy more bags, don’t go here. That is until they change the way they measure your coffee! When I complained and told them I go to somewhere else to buy coffee the worker said that’s because it’s a small company. Technically a franchise or more than one store will be cheaper than the local guy with one store in the state region or country. The Roasting Plant has more than one location in the country. Chazzano does not!

Real bummer of an experience. If you really like specialty coffee, go down the street a few blocks to capital one Café, who uses verve beans. The concept here is cool, but the product is not good. It’s really cool how you can pick which green beans you want, and they roasted immediately. Unfortunately, it just goes into a super automatic espresso machine and comes out like any other cheapo drink. It’s not ground by hand, tamped by hand or espresso shots pulled by hand. It’s completely hands off. They just pump some pre-bottled factory syrup in the cup and push a button and voilà, the machine does the rest. My latte was like 2/3 foam. Even a cappuccino should not have that much foam, and a latte should have not it at all. My drink was less than half full with all the foam removed, so I just returned it. Fortunately, the employees didn’t give me trouble refunding my money. There are so many other awesome coffee shops in the area, You should try those.

Nope. It's not where you'll get beef for your sandwich, nor a chicken for dinner. It's a coffee shop! What sets 'Roasting plant' apart from the plethora of other coffee shops, is, that it has it's own very high techy looking coffee factory right in the shop. Well, maybe not exactly a coffee factory, more like a bunch of clear plastic tubular bins containing coffee, connected to various tubes and gizmos allowing customers to grind and combine various blends of coffee. Certainly, 'Roasting Plant' is not original in offering a wide range of flavors, yet, therein lies a problem: what kind of cup of joe should you whip up? I played it safe,. though, the folks I was with, were more adventurous, and, quite frankly, their results were pretty disastrous. So. Like operating any heavy machinery, make sure you know what you're doing first, because I don't think 'Roasting Plant' offers refunds on a customer created revolting cup of coffee.

Thanks for the reply to my review. I hope you will sincerely consider my comments on the lack of accessibility for customers using wheelchairs. All we want is to be fully independent and go about a normal life like everyone else. The small things like having to ask for help opening a door add up. Thanks!

Their coffee is exceptional. Each cup is brewed fresh to order and I have never been disappointed with the quality. Be prepared to pay a premium price for a premium coffee. A very small cup is over $3.50. I wish I could afford to buy a pound to take home! The staff are always very friendly too. My biggest complaint is handicapped accessibility. Although the building has automatic doors and the coffee shop has a ramp, their glass doors aren't automatic and are so heavy that I can't get in or out without asking someone for assistance.

Unsung heroes are the pastries, with items like peaches and cream danishes, and lemon and lavender scones. Place is pretty small with maybe 4 tables total plus a few bar seats, but the building lobby outside has larger tables. It’s also pretty pricey, but if you love very good coffee that’s just the price you’ve gotta pay for it!

Skip the flavorings and if you like it sweet have them add some coffee blossom honey. Take your drink across the street and enjoy it by the Campus Martius fountain. Teas are great as well. Many good choices from the world’s tea plantations. Matcha is UNsweetened which is how it is supposed to be… how the Buddhist monks drink it. Love this place. One improvement they could make is to have more gluten free baked goods. I would have spent more had they had any food choices for me.

Very cool mini roaster, you can select your beans and the roaster is right beside you. Really enjoyable cappuccino

This is such an amazing coffee place! There are lots of fresh coffee bean choices, and this was the first time that I could choose a coffee bean for my coffee drink. Very delicious latte with Ethiopia Yirgachaffe

Great coffee and great place, now is my favourite coffee In Detroit.
Staff was great and the process to move the coffee beans to espresso machine is almost a show for the clients.

Great place for a good cup of coffee. The place is small, but clean, and the staff is friendly.

There are a lot ofemu options, so there is something for everyone.

I wanted to try a local spot and was sorely disappointed. There were 3 people behind the counter, no one looked at us nor did they ask if we needed any help. When it became apparent that no one wanted to help us we left. Just a mom and her two daughters out exploring the beauties of downtown looking for hot cup of coffee. Too bad we had to go elsewhere.

All the good stuff is crazy expensive and all the inexpensive stuff is bad. If you're looking to shell out some serious coin for a bag, this is a good spot to do it. The ceiling bean vacuum system is a cute novelty; but when I'm looking for a good and reasonably priced cup of coffee, I look elsewhere.

Order a cup of ice coffee and end up with ice is more than a third quarter in my drink, unsatisfied. No AC inside, but the coffee making process is cool though

Our coffees were delicious. Love the concept of picking which beans your drink is made out of, and it was cool to watch the beans fly through the tubes. Parking was difficult. But I would come back sometime.

I like the visual atmosphere of this coffee shop, it's in a nice location for sure. But I didn't like that we were asked to leave because we didn't have masks. I have no issue wearing a mask to keep everyone safe but if you don't have them available for your customers then you're losing on quite a bit of business over like 5 cents so please please please have masks for people that way we can spend at your business! Also, friends grabbed something for me and I tried their hot cocoa and it was pretty watered down.

Place was soooo sick! I loved the vibe and it had a really unique look to it. It was sweet seeing the coffee beans shoot up through the tubes every time they made a cup for someone.
