Tarahumara's Méxican Cafe & Cantina

I would give this great restaurant a 10 for service if I could. We went the Friday after Thanksgiving and it was packed. They greeted us at the door as long lost friends and ushered directly to a table. Within 2 minutes, we had our drinks, chips & salsa and warm queso. We knew to order the chicken fajitas from previous reviews and they were excellent. The chicken was cooked perfectly. I ordered a lunch chimi and it was also excellent. (Sorry had to dig in before I remembered photos!)

The food here is very good and the service is great. Most of the waiting staff are bilingual but all speak English. Very friendly and great drinks. The portion sizes are pretty big so if you have a small stomach you and someone can split a full plate. They also have Habañero salsa for those that need more spice. Just ask for it.

Great authentic Mexican food. Their taco selection is very good. Their rice and beans are very tasty. Their chips and salsa are a great appetizer. Their service is a little slower especially if you do not know how to communicate well with people who speak English as a second language. But I have had a good time there during all of my visits.

While the food was good, I felt it was really overpriced. They charged $5 for a bowl of salsa most other Mexican food restraunts nearby give for free. Also there was a ton of staff, but I rarely attended to by my waiter

I love this place, but they rush you out the door. If it was like $10 a plate I would understand. But it’s more like $18. The setup is great. Their queso clears any Mexican restaurant with a free setup. Just don’t order entrees until you’re ready to get them in the next 3 minutes. I know it’s weird to complain about getting food too quickly, but I never feel relaxed when I eat there. Great food though! Also, it was Baker Mayfield’s favorite place in Norman.

This is a great restaurant. It is very well ran, the owner Efrain has been there every time I have been (which has been several times) and is doing whatever needs done! I have seen him help bus tables, assist in bringing food to tables, you name it. That very much impressed me as most owners sit back and tell others what to do. You won't see the staff here slack off, they stay on it. Food is always on point and comes out quick as possible! Drinks stay full, they get tables clear and cleaned quickly to get people in and get the food to them asap. Every restaurant should be ran the way this one is! I look forward to many more trips to Tarahumaras!

I love this place, but the people cleaning should try to be more quiet. I know how silly that sounds, but it's so loud. It's really nice to sit outside, but the chairs are good if you have no junk in the trunk. Seriously, though. I hope they have changed it those chairs outside.

Raised their prices again. It’s astronomical. I understand we’re all hurting but it really seems greedy since they’ve done it recently. Hope the workers are seeing a raise and not just the owner getting more profit. We are 2 adults and one baby. Order fajitas and tacos for dinner. Usually around $60 including 20% tip or more. It was $80 without tip. For to go order. Truly in disbelief.

This used to be a 5 star place for me, but the last couple of times we have gone, everything seems to be riding the tastless train. This feeling has between multiple people, especially in regards to the house salsas, even the paid hot salsa --- just seems like no flavor. For the most recent visit, I swear the "hot" upcharge salsa tasted like it was dipped in sugar and salt, which no other flavors.

The service here is amazing, and everything feels like it is moving around at 100mph while also being very well organized. It's the main reason we go, but after the remodel, the food itself just feels....less than hoped for, for us. Will try again, but I will probably space out the visits more than before.

One more note, the drinks are quite nice. Good portions, appearance, and strength. So, another positive note. Just need to find out what happened to the food flavor!

It was a little expensive, however the food was good. The music was too loud for me. If you’re short, I would recommend a table. My feet didn’t touch the floor. 🙃 I would go back.

The fajitas and pork tamales were amazing! We are definitely eating here regularly. I'd recommend an outside table if you want to have dinner conversation. The noise level inside makes it difficult to do much talking. The food is worth the visit!

Great atmosphere. Great staff. I seen a table leave, it get bussed down and have new customers with chips and salsa in less than 30 seconds! Definitely not $10-$20 a person like Google says. More like $20-$30. Chips were thin and weren't hot.

This is a great restaurant. It is very well ran, the owner Efrain has been there every time I have been (which has been several times) and is doing whatever needs done! Wife and I stopped by for lunch. Before I sat down we were ask what we wanted to drink. As I sat into the booth and adjusted myself staff had brought us chips and THE BEST cheese dip I've ever had. We ordered and it felt like 3 minutes later we had our food which was outstanding. The only bad thing I have to say is now I have to come up with some excuse to get to Norman once a week.

I first started eating here over 20 years ago in college. Easily the best Tex-Mex in Oklahoma. Great location and vibe as well. Whenever I come back to Norman, I always eat here.

I’ve only written one negative review prior to this, but this deserves one. I found a long black hair in my food. My hair is coppery blonde. The waiter took it back and I said it was fine, I didn’t need a new one. They then charged me for a set up because I didn’t buy a meal which is just absolutely horrible customer service when your staff’s hair was in my food in the first place.

I am a flag carrying Mexican food lover!! This place has never disappointed! The absolute best Mexican food and service others wish they had.

This visit I had Tacos Al Borrego for the first time and they were so good I could’ve cried.

They have an enclosed patio to expand seating. It’s fantastic!

The menu has a photo for every item.

Portion sizes on most dishes are large.

Black beans are super flavorful.

Rice is ok. Not too bad. Re fried beans are good.

You get your food quickly.

This place is always busy. We went around 4pm on a week day and was seated immediately.

The bathrooms are clean!

The staff, every one that I’ve encountered, is super nice and helpful and Johnny on the spot.

Other dishes: the fajitas are never dry and the protein has a great flavor. Enchiladas are wonderful. They have a green avocado salsa that they offer that complemented my Tacos Al Borrego like they were made for each other.

This is not just the best Mexican in Norman, but all of Oklahoma I’ve had in 25 years here and most of Texas, which I lived for 20 years.

I eat here at least 2 times a week. Today I got food. My food was wrong so I called and they said bring it back we will fix it. Mind you I was all the way home which was not close. The gentlemen told me I owed 1.69 I had no money on me and they wouldn't fix it unless I payed. wow I'm at a loss for words .. won't be eating there for a while. I'll definitely be finding me a new Mexican restaurant to eat at.

Restaurant was very clean and well organized and all of the staff were extremely efficient, friendly and helpful. Our waiter was the best!! I ordered lunch chicken fajitas with refried beans and they were excellent!! My husband ordered the beef and he also thought everything was excellent. We will definitely be returning!

Excellent Mexican cuisine with equal service served hot and fresh. Our first visit there and most assuredly we will return.
Their menue is extensive and if a person leaves hungry it certainly would be a mystery. The portions are generous and the flavor is authentic.

Make no mistake, this is still the best tex-mex in Norman. Unfortunately, the economic hurdles have had a noticeable effect on the quality, portion size, and overall value of the food and drinks here. The service remains top notch.

For example, the Fajita Mix platter used to be considerably larger and the quality of the meat has also taken a downward turn.

We visited on 11/13 for dinner and received the worst service we’ve ever had at Tarahumara’s.

We drive 40 minutes from Edmond because we have always enjoyed the prompt and attentive service. However, this time we waited almost 10 minutes for cheese and salsa while the standard procedure here is to receive that within seconds of being seated. But this was only the beginning.

I asked for double rice instead of beans and my plate arrived with beans and rice. So we asked for some extra rice, and that too was over 10 minutes of waiting - just for a side of rice? We were already done eating by then.

The server seemed very busy which is understandable, however the restaurant was not busy and there were many other employees walking around or sitting down folding silverware that could have helped him. The manager stopped by a couple of times to help, but at the end we asked for some tortilla chips to take home with our leftovers and were told that would be $9. Just for tortilla chips?? He then went and checked the price and told us it is $9 for chips and salsa or $8 for only the chips - seems a bit crazy considering the chips are free all night and very inexpensive.

But the worst part is how the manager rudely interacted with us when we explained how our evening went. We told him we received poor service and waited much longer than usual for things like chips and dip, as well as our meal that arrived incorrectly and wasn’t fixed for much longer. The manager had no empathy, spoke to us very rudely and offered no true apology or anything for our trouble. And couldn’t even let us have some tortilla chips for our leftovers without paying $8. This person should not be a manager, or anything in the service industry for that matter. He would be better off at a job with no interaction with others.

I absolutely love this amazing gem! We eat here for family day and we love it so much we went there for my dad's birthday 🎂🎉 and the service is always A1-top notch-two thumbs up👍👍 !!!! I’ve ate at many “Mexican Restaurants” across America and this is still considered TexMex. I was surprised to find that the tortillas were not freshly made at least when I was there. The rest of the food is pretty good maybe less salty would be better. Not a bad place. Fairly clean and the atmosphere is great!

Needs to be more transparent with their pricing. I went into this restaurant with my girlfriend and she told the waitress we were gonna share a meal. I had already eaten some food before going and just wanted the rice and beans from her meal. They told us they were gonna charge us for sharing but I was not expecting 9 dollars…. On top of the price of her meal… Not worth

my friend who is diabetic they decided because she took one chip (supposed to be complimentary ) decided to charge her 9$ for one chip and refused to let her not get an entre so since she didn't want to get an entre they said no were gonna charge you for the single chip you ate. worthless place to spend money.

Fíjate muy bien lo que ordenas por que si tú o la mesera se equivoca no hay nadie que solocione tu problema ya que las órdenes tardan 25 minutos para que salgan y ellos no se hacen cargo de nada por que son ellos los que tienen razón el manager y sus ayudantes se te van encima a mi experiencia en servicio al cliente no saben actuar para solucionar un problema al contrario todos se molestan contigo y sobre lo que ponen en el menú también fíjate bien por qué no es lo que realmente traen y en eso tampoco te ayudan que mala experiencia

I really had great expectations from this place since my sister had been here multiple times. She bragged about how clean the place is and how fast the food comes out. The truth is the place is clean and the food comes fast but the place is not ready to handle a table of 17 guests. At least Laura, our waiter is not. She treated us with desperation, disrespect and with a very ugly attitude. Don’t even ask her about the difference between enchilas verdes and Mexican enchiladas because you will get a “they’re different” with frustration. She was expecting us to order faster and not wanting to let us breathe. She has no patience and no manners to treat people. To top it off, the supervisor was giving us the look and the faces as if we were too picky and too problematic. You don’t do that to any guests. I guess he decided to what the waiter told him first instead of asking if everything was alright. Anyway, if you have a big table don’t come here unless you’re okay with being treated with disrespect, desperation and with an ugly attitude. The food is okay but the experience did not help us enjoy the taste.

Para terminar sin mucha explicación, cada que pedía algo como nose tortillas la mesera decía las si las traje pero las ponía en otro lado,trajo una bebida demás y la mesera aseguraba que si la abiamos ordenado y no fue así, también no escucho bien porque trajo un platillo por otro ,cuando trajo los platillos con la comida pidió que nosotros le limpiaremos para poner los platos ,pedí un chile poblano relleno de queso y no el chile relleno solo era una tira de chile ,me dio mucha pena que bino el maneger o dueño nose ,pero le hicimos saber toda la situación y defendió a capa y espada ala cocina y la mesera ,solo vengo de paso a Oklahoma vengo de Dallas ,deberían de tener más cuidado con sus clientes . Desafortunadamente no le saque foto a la comida.

I hadn't been here before. A lovely friend suggested we meet here. I had been craving good Mexican food since moving to OK. Well, I was so happy. I ordered chicken/beef fajitas. The plate was HUGE, beans - excellent. The meat was cooked to perfection. Very tasty. There was enough food, I ate it for lunch the next day. The salsa is amazing. Our server was very attentive and nice. Tarahumara's will now be my fave.

Many areas to be seated, however I Don't like sitting by the kitchen! I believe all restaurants should Always make room for kitchen & service pathways to be a reasonable distance from dining areas(excluding bar). This establishment has remodeled their business in the past. It's a small shame they didn't think of this.

Owner might try to fight you. My family and I used to come here at least twice a month (sometimes more) and spend $300 or more between drinks and food, etc. That was until one day when an employee stumbled and dumped hot cheese sauce and salsa on our table. I was in the service industry at one point, I get that stuff happens. I was however wearing a nearly $500 suit that would now need dry cleaned, my shoes needed cleaned, and my watch was literally soaked in cheese. The staff itself said "We are going to get the manager for you right now" unprompted by us. Then the young owner showed up, and asked "What do you want?" When explained what happened he said, "And?" I very calmly explained I would need to dry clean, and the other 2 people at my table who were covered in cheese would need to do the same. I didn't ask for a free plate or free drinks anything. I said, "Maybe a discount or something, just for the people who had sauce dumped on them?" He replied with an immediate "No I'm not giving out free food" and was very rude. I explained the dry cleaning situation etc, and his response was "Not my problem." So then I said "you would rather us not spend $500-$1000 in your establishment monthly than give us a $20 discount?" His reply floored me. "Yes. I don't need your business." Just wow. Then, we are trying to get our check paid in full with our card, and the young owner is getting more upset for some reason. He squared up to me and told me to leave right then and never come back. Granted he's all of 5'2" 145 lbs and I'm 6'5" 210+ lbs so his "threatening" body language definitely wasn't, but I let him have his way as a physical conflict is never justified. Completely insane behavior from a small business owner. My family and everyone I know gets steered away from this place now. Just go try Ted's or Chuy's. You won't get swung on there.

Way better Mexican restaurants around, the cheese is all fake from a can you can taste the chemicals in it. Food was blah not much flavor and in my opinion over priced to pay $20 for 2 flautas beans and rice. Shrimp Cocktail most expensive I’ve ever paid for it and was not good flavor, just ate the shrimp out of it and left the rest.Salsa is ok and the only thing I was ok eating. Won’t be returning.

Excellent food. Busy place. Everything I've had there has been great. The flan is AMAZING,it tastes like a cross between cheesecake and creme brulee, it's a must try.

We ordered the shrimp cocktail. Mass confusion with waiter. He sent us shrimp ceviche. They took the ceviche back and brought us our shrimp cocktails then charged us for both. They refused to take the ceviche off the bill.

We were seated right away even though the restaurant's parking lot was full and we had to park next door. I was VERY surprised. The staff operated like a well oiled machine and took care of the tables immediately as guests left them. Service was rapid and drink refills timely. The atmosphere was loud and over stimulating for my toddler and the tables were crowded together. There was screened in outdoor seating around 3 sides of the restaurant. We went when the weather was cool and I wish I would ha ve asked for outdoor seats.
The food was the BEST PART! As it should be. But I was surprised that it was so much better than a popular chain restaurant that I was previously a die-hard fan of for 2 decades.

1st time visit. Lots of parking though they stay super busy. No call aheads or reservations due to this. Service was excellent and food was amazingly delicious 😋 Highly recommended!

The food here is very good and the service is great. Most of the waiting staff are bilingual but all speak English. Very friendly and great drinks. The portion sizes are pretty big so if you have a small stomach you and someone can split a full plate. They also have Habañero salsa for those that need more spice. Just ask for it.
